Sword, sail, black powder, and women who may be as deadly as they are beautiful.

Adventure and intrigue seem to follow Captain Edward MacNaughten. More than his own fortune is at stake as he stumbles across a plot to assassinate King William. This is hopefully just the first of his adventures in the age of sword, sail, and black powder.
Although this is a fictional adventure, it includes many historical details and plausible speculation regarding the Jacobite attempt at the assassination of King William in 1696. The story reflects the spirit of The Three Musketeers, Horatio Hornblower, and a bit of Don Juan. Following the characters through the details of daily life in the seventeenth century provides an interesting backdrop for the twists and turns of adventure and political intrigue. The sex scenes are strong allusions, within the norm of today's main stream fiction. We look forward to reading more of Captain MacNaughten's adventures.

It is such a delight to read historical fiction written with intimate knowledge of the material culture involved — and by someone with the writing chops to tell a well-wrought tale. Benerson Little's non-fiction works on the sweet trade are indispensable. However, not every writer can make the jump from non-fiction to fiction, which requires narrative skills not called upon so strongly in general historical writing. I am pleased to say that Little makes the leap as effectively as a boarding crew taking a prize.

Well researched and gripping.

This is an historical novel on a grand scale. Drawing extensively on his own hands-on experience of fencing and swordplay, plus his expertise in piracy in all forms past and present, the author endows his hero, Captain Edward MacNaughton, with similar attributes. Set in the latter part of the seventeenth century, in England, France and Ireland, this is a swashbuckling story of a privateer captain and his rumbustious adventures both ashore and afloat. Although it is sometimes it is difficult to separate fact from fiction this does not detract from the pace or authenticity of the story.
Nevertheless, new readers might benefit from first studying the comprehensive historical notes, a chapter on the technicalities of sword fighting, plus a glossary of terms in regular use at the time but mostly unfamiliar today. These cover twenty-five pages at the back of the book and provide a fascinating 'trailer' before the story opens.. One is then better equipped to be at MacNaughton's side as the gripping tale unfolds. Each chapter opens with a well-researched quote. One, a seventeenth century Spanish proverb, "Women, wind, and Fortune, are given to change", might be an apt summary of this compelling book.
