"Searching for a Hero"

I've stepped outside my comfort zone again. Nobody can say I'm a Negative Man. I enjoyed the pace and readability of this one. OK, the comic book hero isn't a genre I often consider when reading for fun, but this one is well-written and had just the right amount of light and shade to keep my interest through to the final page.

“Hmph. Well, ya think ya know a guy…”
This can be said pretty much for every one of the characters in this fast-moving, intriguing book.
However, I get ahead of myself.
In brief: The city of Pacific Station has been under the protection (if you will) of various superheroes for a very long time. In years past, it had the dubious distinction of being “cared for” by The Negative Man, a character who believed strongly in the idea that “Might is Right”. Not long ago, that position was challenged by another wunderkind, The Dark Lion.
Sometimes it doesn’t pay to be the good guy, because bad guys come in and try to make you bad by causing you to abandon your principles—which is always a threat.
Jericho Staley, sidekick to the current champion, sees that his boss, The Dark Lion, is losing to these types. He does everything in his power to undermine the outlaws in order to keep his boss on the good side, but it seems as if the inevitable is going to happen.
It’s not all bad for Jericho, though—he seems to have attracted a young lady, Heather Adams, who could have had the pick of any guy in the city, but has chosen him. However, she has powers of her own that she hadn’t known about—and which are very dangerous if not controlled.
Things go from okay, to bad, to worse, when The Negative Man shows his face (sort of) again. The question is now—who will win in the final showdown? Because there WILL be one.
What an exciting book! Such drama, so many colorful characters! I was drawn in immediately. The author spins a well-thought-out, fascinating story, filled with intentional misdirection and red herrings. I loved every word.
The ending was perfect—simply because I never saw it coming. An absolute surprise!
Oh—and be sure to read the Cast of Characters page towards the end, because it leads you into the next section of the book—and a whole other adventure…

Worthwhile Read For Comic Book Fans! :)

The Negative Man was a pretty good read. It had a very nostalgic feel for those of us that grew up in the comic book / superhero world of entertainment but with more of a mature and a bit dark twist to it. I liked the characters and the progression of the story a lot; it kept me reading continuously which sometimes is difficult with new stories nowadays because a lot of it seems more like a retelling or rehash of things we read many times before but this stayed pretty original most of the way through the story. Having read many of these story types I sort of figured it where it was going about halfway through but that didn’t take away from the neat lil twist in the story. All in all a good read, I look forward to the continuation of the series.
