Young adult fantasy/apocalypse. Get through the first few chapters and you'll be hooked!
By jolene
It started out a little slow and confusing for me. I didn't read the synopsis before starting so that is probably a factor in my initial confusion. What time period is this? Is this an alternative universe? Is her planet travel something everyone can do? All of these could have been answered by reading the synopsis, so that's my mistake. After the first couple chapters I realized what was going on and got more into it. After a few more chapters I got to the point where I was pulling out my kindle every chance I could to see what happened next.

Once I got a grip on what was happening I really enjoyed it! The characters were interesting and believable. Gwen, the main character, has adapted really well to the new world. It's a scary place and she is tough, intelligent, and self sufficient. I am partial to a strong female character and appreciated that she isn't so hardened by her new reality that she is unwilling to open up to people. Her relationship with her horse is loving and deeply connected. You can feel the bond they have, and I swear if something happens to that horse in the next book(s) I will boycott A. Ray forever. Just kidding, kind of. Lily is a little annoying in that younger sister kind of way. You love her but she drives you nuts at the same time. She retains some childlike qualities and a sense of humor ,which is nice, especially since she had it rough before meeting Gwen. Calvin is your typical love interest. He is kind and cares for everyone around him. But he is a little boring. I hope his character develops more in the future. Rawl, I'm still on the fence with. He is interesting and mysterious. But I am not sure if I entirely trust him yet. His speech pattern is a little irritating at times but I anticipate his english getting better in the future. (His people are supposed to be good with languages after all.)

As far as the plot goes, I really liked the idea that a disease we accidentally brought back from Mars is what killed most of the planet off. It's not your typical apocalypse scenario and really I don't think it's something many of us have ever considered about space exploration. It also leaves a lot of unknowns and doesn't limit the author to "facts" since it's nothing we've encountered before. They can really take this situation anywhere which I think could be really interesting. Also, I was grateful it didn't turn into a zombie book. We have enough zombie books to last a lifetime.

My only slight issue with this book (and really not an issue, I think I am just older than the intended audience) is the writing has a juvenile feel to it. It's not poorly written, it's just written for a younger audience than an almost 30 year old that likes to read young adult books. But hey, Harry Potter is my favorite series and I feel the same way about the first 2 books. Maybe this series will follow suit and mature as the intended readers mature as well.

Ultimately this book passes my test for a good book. When I notice I am nearing the end, am I relieved because I want to start something else? Or can I not wait for the next book? I definitely found myself wanting to continue Gwen's journey and hope it isn't too long before the next one.

I would recommend this book for anyone that is interested in sci-fi/fantasy/apocalypse books.

*I received this book in exchange for an honest review. This is my honest opinion*

A Must Read!
By Erika's Life Adventures
If you want to read a fantastic book with a strong, smart female heroine combined with futuristic fantasy aspects and full of detail character descriptions then this is definitely your book! Gwen's character is a survival savvy young girl with a beautiful horse as her best friend and traveling companion who will have you sitting on the edge of your seat waiting to find out what happens next. Explore new planets and make new friends with Gwen in this book as she works to find a way to save the human race all while falling in love! I finished this book as fast as I could and I can't wait for the next one!

Terra Down
By Karen McAllister
I really enjoyed this book. It's great to read a story that grabs the reader's interest and keeps it. I liked the strong female characters. Each time Gwen traveled to a new planet I was fascinated by Pearl's transformation. I was stunned at the end because I was not ready for the book to end! I'm looking forward to the next book! If you enjoy the dystopian genre this book is right up your alley.
