Great series, reality and fiction collide

This is a great addition to the Occult Assassin series. The book is set in Paris and draws eerie parallels to the outrageous attacks on the beautiful city that took place on November 13, 2015. Even though there is a paranormal force at work in the book, there are people who are full of hatred behind it. Sometimes fiction isn't that far from reality.
There's more I'd like to say, but I don't want to give away anything. This is really a thought provoking book, and takes a hard look at racial and class divides. It looks at things people want to ignore. Things that aren't going to go away until we can talk about them openly, without judgement, without hatred and without violence. This book doesn't look at them in a political way, just in a factual one. It just lays it out and things unfold, unfortunately much the same as they do all too often in the real world.
As always, the characters are well done and you really get a feel for who they they are and what they are going through. We're getting deeper into Casca's motivations and methods. It's going to be interesting to see where that goes.
You can read these as stand-alones, there is no cliffhanger to leave you guessing until the next book. You will have a better idea of character progression if you read them in order, but you really don't have to. I would recommend that you do, just so you understand the growth of the main characters, however.
If you've been reading the Occult Assassin books, I think you're going to be pleased with this one as well. Definitely pick it up. If you're new to this series, start at the beginning and be sure to check out some of the other works by this author as well!

Best Occult Assassin story yet, with historical and biblical significance.

This is the best yet in the Occult Assassin series. Talon's opening action sequence is worthy of a James Bond movie. For most of the story, he's bearing minimal arms. It's not firepower that gets him through this adventure, but the self-control and resourcefulness that comes from training, situational awareness and commitment to doing the right thing, whatever the cost. Admirable. The supernatural evil he battles is classic horror, taking something from real life and expanding it into a larger, terrifying context. Set primarily in the tenement slums of Paris where Muslim immigrants live in squalor, a rash of bizarre terrorist attacks is traced back to a charismatic leader and a demonic, mind-controlling entity worthy of HP Lovecraft. While eliciting necessary but uncomfortable sympathy for the plight of Muslims who either refuse or are unable to assimilate into western culture, he gives an occult face to the kind of extreme madness that leads desperate people to horrific actions. While I don't agree with "the devil made me do it" defense, this book is the best novel I've seen that exemplifies Ephesians 6:12 from the Bible: "For our struggle is not with flesh and blood but with the principalities, with the powers, with the world rulers of this present darkness, with the evil spirits in the heavens." Powerful stuff, and thought-provoking, as well as thrilling action and copious but never egregious gore. Finally, I appreciate that the seeds of an ongoing story arc are planted without ending on a cliffhanger.

The story takes current event conflicts and adds a supernatural twist. Once I started, the story was very hard for me to put down until I finished ... and then I was wanting more.
Written before the awful events in Paris, William Massa does address some of the social concerns taking place now in France and in other parts around the world with religion, desperation, anger and classism.
