A Fun Read for the Family

I'm proud to be the first reviewer of Ms. Ayer's book. This is a lighthearted, exciting story of a boy living on the edge of a magical faerie kingdom--without really knowing it. By accident, (his pet chicken escapes while being walked on a yarn leash) he discovers a vast cavern of treasure beneath the hillside near his home. We're taken into Simon's world of legos and Dr. Who and loving parents that let him and his friends explore and ultimately discover that one of their closest friends is one of the Fae. I would recommend this book for anyone who can read--it's an exciting frolic of innocent fun and surprises.

Though this book is for children, it will be enjoyed by young and old alike because it is so well-written. It will make a wonderful summer read for children as the characters are believable yet quite magical.

An enjoyable read for the whole family! I enjoyed the English setting & learning a bit about how they live, work and play on the other side of the 'pond'. A purchase for my 10 year old granddaughter, she liked the story and was fascinated by the artful blend of modern day and fantasy. We both hope to see more work by this talented author.

The Augusta Lifeboat series has me hooked. I have always liked stories written as 'short' novels in a series format. It leaves you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next book.
The first 2 books really set the tone and now I cant wait to see where the characters go from here. Keisha and Randy are likeable, interesting characters with a world to save. I'm looking forward to see how they go about it.

A great sequel, and an imaginative storyline. Highly recommend.

4.5 Stars for the second book in the LeFay series. It really should be be read in order.

Morgan LeFay is a gifted 16 year old, one of the strongest magic wielders in Camelot, and still, she was not selected to be the Maven, adviser to young Prince Arthur. No, that duty was awarded to Merlin, a boy in Morgan’s class who was clearly infatuated with her. But, Merlin’s got a checkered association with the Luminaries, a sect of magic wielders who seek to bring down the House of Pendragon, of which Arthur and King Uther are sprung. Being Maven seems a supreme conflict of interest for Merlin, and Morgan’s both frustrated and jealous.

And, depressed. Morgan returns to her father’s home to sulk instead of assuming her post as a Black Knight under the command of High Knight Lancelot. Lancelot comes to pry her from her sorrow, and it sets off a chain of events that I did not see coming. Morgan’s soon on the run–with Prince Arthur, a sulky teen if ever I read one, and searching high and low for the mystical Excalibur. The trip is dangerous, and Morgan has certainly signed her own death warrant by making this trip. It’s really a mission, one that she hopes will save Arthur from a Luminary plot. And she’s pledged her life to protecting Arthur.

The endearment that arises between them is good. It wasn’t sappy or anything. Arthur is a bit of a pill–he’s 14 and it shows–and he only slightly warms to Morgan in their adventure. He grows up A LOT in this experience. I liked that part. Lancelot and Merlin have very mixed feelings about Morgan. On one hand she’s a traitor, on the other she could be a patriot. And the murk surrounding the Luminaries plans keeps Morgan on a path to execution. Well, maybe.

This is a story that kept me guessing, and I felt engaged throughout. It’s a rather innocent tale, and a bit melancholy. I was grieved when Morgan was arrested, and felt that her new status, as a bearer of Pendragon’s Blessing, would have saved her, but it was not the case. The end is a fast and furious ride that includes a stay of execution in the most dire of ways. Arthur and Morgan have some reckonings to make, and I am eager to see how this plays out in the next book in this series. I also wonder how both Merlin and Lancelot will handle their feelings for Morgan going forward. I’m not certain that it qualifies as a “love triangle” as Morgan has only discovered romantic feelings, and they are set on one man–the one she cannot have. The resolution is sufficient for this volume, but the story remains active. Definitely recommend!

Even Better Than the First

I loved the first book in the Le Fay series. Dearly. It's still one of my favorite indie books of all time--BUT I think Sword was even better. Yes, you read that right, better. No second book slump whatsoever, which is pretty rare. The characters, plot, the various emotions...everything was just beautiful.

I enjoyed reading about Morgan in the first book mostly because she was such an intriguing character. That intrigue continues in Storm, but more so. The book really delves into her mental state; there's a lot of focus on her emotions, which I loved but at times I could not stand because I just wanted her to be okay is that too much to ask. (That goes to show how emotionally invested in this series I am, so not necessarily a bad thing.) There are some shocking reveals about her past in this book, which I did not see coming at all. These reveals really added to her relationship with Prince Arthur.

Prince Arthur was a character I had no real feelings for in Henge, mostly because he was not shown very often. That changes in Storm, and I ended up really loving him. He's a very complicated character; not spoiled like he originally seems to be, but instead a very damaged kid. He and Morgan have a complicated, yet endearing, relationship. The way this plays into his personality is very interesting to see, and it adds a bit of ambiguity to how his character will turn out in the next book.

Merlin...I cannot describe how I feel about Merlin. He summons up a well of mixed emotions in me. I can't really say I want Morgan and him to end up together--I think their relationship has become a bit too complicated and borderline-toxic for that to happen, so sorry to anyone who ships them but I am rooting against that. However, despite my reservations on that end, I really do like reading about him, because he's not a black-or-white character. Sometimes I will hate him and sometimes I will feel extremely sorry for him. My feelings for him have not really changed since the last book.

BUT...LANCELOT. LANCELOT IS NOW ONE OF MY FAVORITE CHARACTERS AND I SHIP HIM AND MORGAN I SHIP IT SO HARD. I thought he was a bit boring in Henge, but seeing him care for Morgan and be so tender to her really awakened my feelings for him. He is a precious person, and I want him and Morgan to be happy forever together.

The plot was fantastically executed. There were some very tense moments; up until the very end, I was not sure how the book would end. (Spoiler Ahead) Even though I knew there was another book after this one, I was 90% convinced at one point that Morgan was going to die. That seems stupid to write in hindsight, but the author was very good at keeping me guessing. (End Spoiler) In most second-books-in-a-series, the plot kind of drags--it's more of a bridge from the first book to the second book than its own entity. In Sword, the book wastes no time; there is action right from the start, and even when the book slows down a bit, there are revelations and emotionally-packed scenes that kept me interested.

I cannot wait to finish the rest of the Le Fay series. If the next book is as good as this one, I know I will love it. Even if you have never read the Arthurian legends--or, like me, you read them when you were eight, thought they were dumb, and subsequently forgot most of the story--I guarantee you will still be able to love these wonderful, wonderful books.

Brilliant Sequel

Sword is the second book in the Le Fay series by Realm Lovejoy and is even better than its predecessor, giving the first novel a run for its money in the high stakes department and taking readers on an exciting adventure from beginning to end!

Morgan le Fay managed to survive the brutal tests that saw her become an official member of Camelot. She may not have been chosen as the Maven with the job going to Merlin, but Morgan is still in service to the royal family, even if she believes there are suspicious things going on in Camelot. When new evidence comes to light and knowing no one who shares her suspicions is willing to help, Morgan takes drastic actions to protect Prince Arthur---going so far as to kidnap the young royal.

I really enjoyed the first book in this series Henge when I read it last year and was excited to have the chance to continue on with Morgan’s journey. Realm Lovejoy continues to detail Morgan’s story in spectacular fashion, and ensures readers will be sucked in from the very beginning of Sword. Fast paced, exciting and sensationally detailed, Lovejoy twists and weaves things together expertly and kept me hooked from the opening chapter.

There’s some fantastic storyline developments in this instalment, as well as a lot of danger for Morgan to face. As with the previous book, motives where other characters are concerned are always unclear, and just who can be trusted is always something to think about. Personally I love the kind of mystery and magic that is found in this series and can’t commend Lovejoy enough for how she’s writing the series so far!

Morgan is headstrong, vocal and not afraid to do what she feels is right. This means she often takes big chances and big risks, but you have to love a heroine who knows her own heart and follows it. Morgan has a secure definition of right and wrong, but isn’t afraid to break rules. Basically I think Morgan is really kick-ass and am loving following her so far—she’s my kind of gal!

There’s a lot of change within this novel with Morgan’s relationships with the other characters, especially with some unexpected news coming to light. Personally I’m interested to see what happens between Morgan and Merlin in the future, but considering what happens between her and Lancelot, Realm Lovejoy obviously isn’t afraid to mix things up. Morgan’s father Gorlis and Guinevere are strong supporters as ever, and Prince Arthur starts to show real substance in this novel.

With the ending shocking for a number of reasons, Realm Lovejoy concludes Sword at an interesting moment. I for one can’t wait to see what happens to Morgan next and I’ll be keeping my eye out for the next book as soon as it’s released!

Classic, endearing and quintessential British sci-fi!

It's hard not to judge a book by its cover, and though Desiccation pays decent homage to the golden era of 1960's sci-fi, the story is more a blend of different genres. The first dozen pages or so I wasn’t entirely comfortable with the story. I can’t put my finger on why, maybe it was a little out of my usual genre, though that’s not a reflection of the story as I do enjoy delving into a different genre.

Set in a girl’s boarding school rife with characters from 1960’s British upper class, I floundered a little with the names – Miss Dandridge, Miss Featherstone and the hoity Samantha Hamilton-Brown, who I actually quite liked as an elitist snob. However, as their personalities blossomed I grew to both like and indeed loath those that inhabit Toffdene School.

What kept me going beyond those first pages was the rich, almost lyrical and poetic narrative. It reminded me a little of my first primary school – oak wall panels that were polished and tarnished at the same time, the smell of oldness, wood, leather, hockey sticks, thick strawberry custard poured from large battered metal jugs and no sign of a vending machine or fast food, save sweeties bought from the tuck shop!

Desiccation has at its heart a quintessential Britishness that is both endearing and at times off putting. The reason why is because the Brits depicted are so concerned with saying the right thing in the right way so not to offend, that even when something terrifying is just around the corner, reaching for them in the dark, they can’t help but be profoundly polite about it all. Well, most of the time, until the airs and graces are dropped and the potty mouth comes out for a quick quip or two.

I guess the reason why I found it off putting, at first, is that although I am British and often fall into the trappings of being polite, I tend to lean toward the Yankee sensibility of speaking my mind rather than beating about the bush to avoid offending someone. However, I enjoyed how Janet managed to maintain that sense of “being proper” even when faced with astonishing situations.

For me the sci-fi element seeps in so slow I barely noticed it was there for quite some time until the penny dropped and I thought “Ah, so it’s like that, right?” Except it wasn’t because the plot weaves some interesting elements, yes from science fiction, but there are nuances of fantasy, thriller, teenagerisms, and a glimmer or two of erotic undertones that were unexpected and refreshing.

I can’t write a fair review without saying what didn’t work for me. I found Quillin’s need for Janet to go home and save her brother a bit of an anti-climax because no sooner had they got home than they were whisked back to school. It felt like a build up to nothing. And whilst the point of view of Andy/Joe/Samantha/ was well written, I wanted to read the same scene from Janet’s view point, or at least switch back to her again.

I didn’t quite get where Janet’s affection for Joe came from. That seemed a bit pushed later on, whereas there was little mention of her attraction to him earlier for me to believe it, unless I missed that bit. I would have liked to read a scene or two where Samantha was practicing séances, not only for the tension and creepy factor, but to make the connection between the bad guys and her psychic powers more believable or memorable.

That being said neither of these things detracted from the enjoyment of the story. Desiccation is indeed very British, and a reminder that not all science fiction has to be about star ships, lasers and one dimensional bad guys who want to kill everything for a random clichéd reason. Like I said before this is a story of subtle blends of genres that work very well together.

So, if you fancy a sci-fi tale that treads off the beaten track, but at the same time manages to hark back to those glory days when the genre was in its infancy, I whole heartedly recommend Desiccation. It’s a quirky and enjoyable story that surprised and entertained me.

Learning UK words

When I first started reading Desiccation I was a little confused with some of the British word usage that is slightly different from what I read in the US. I stayed persistent and finally got a flow. Sarah pulled me into the story. I wanted to know who theses people were and how they were invading the school. These beings are a bit perverted. I had no idea how the story was going to end and who was going to survive. I wasn't disappointed. It is worth spending time to read. One thing for sure Sarah has one heck of an imagination. Pick this book and you will be in for a reading a treat.

And what a good thing too

This may be a book intended for young adults but that never stopped me before; Harry Potter, anyone? ;-)

This does not fall into the genre I usually pick up but since a friend wrote it, of course I had to read it! And what a good thing too. Though I struggled a bit with the very British language at times, (was on vacation with no dictionary and no Internet!) mostly in the beginning, I did not let it deter me from continuing on and eventually was right in the thick of it.

The science fiction aspect is almost insidious. It starts off as a story of a bright, scholarly girl named Janet trying to fit into her snobbish private school. She starts noting that very strange things are going on around her and, instead of succumbing to the seeming madness, is lucky enough to have a guardian angel in the form of a pixie named Quillin. I wish a Pixie kiss would clear up my skin!

I could not put it down and got totally enraptured by the story. Sarah Potter has a wonderful imagination and I do not hesitate to recommend this book - to both young and older adults!

RIGGED is a thriller involving the rescue of a kidnapped former President, Dubya from terrorists hiding him on an abandoned oil rig. Featuring Dubya, ISIS terrorists, DICK personnel introduced in the last book, Mack McGirt, and of course, Shagball, Tangles and Holly (and her relatives), this book is perhaps the funniest of the series. Like the others, once I got started I couldn't put it down.

"Rigged" marks a more mature effort for AC Brooks. His plotting is better and his voice is gaining strength. I re-read all of his novels ahead of this one and enjoyed the ride. Cannot wait for the next installment this year. Those of you who have not tried these novels, shame on you. Now, can Shagball please shut up???

A Wonderful Story for Helping a Child Learn to Become Trustworthy

This is a wonderful story to teach kids how to become trustworthy. As the young boy drinks his lemonade (or looks at other reflections in the water), he discovers a young prince who teaches him how to find the prince within himself. The prince in the lemonade explains that the child needs to look to include for those who may be left out of games, to stand up to the bully, to thank his mother for all that she does for him, to meet his own promises to himself. These are powerful stories for a young child, looking for ways to become a good and trustworthy person. Such are Sally Huss's stories -- simple in rhyme but with messages that will help every child find his or her moral compass. It is a story that will stay with a child for a lifetime.

The Prince in my Lemonade

This is an adorable story. A wonderful reminder for big and little boys everywhere to be kind, helpful, compassionate and many other virtues. When read by a father to his son it is a bonding for the two of them. An unspoken language that only men and little boys understand and share. A passing of the torch from one generation to another. I like that the Prince shows up just when he is needed. It's like he KNOWS. It's wonderful to have a new best friend that is there for you and even better that you know he will ALWAYS be there because he is your higher self. Another timely book by Sally. Just when the world needs more positive male role models for youngsters.

mind opening in a fun way

This is an adorable book for little boys to remind them of the various virtues we walk through life with, everyday, only sometimes not so easy to remember. I love the idea of the reminders coming out of a cup or lemonade and the other bright ideas, Sally has for all the places we can be reminded to shift our behavior. It opens up the world and made my kids ask -- do you think there is a prince in my drink? Yes! If you want there to be!

About the Author
Nathan E. Harvey is a theoretical analyst of reanimation in dystopian societies as well as a keeper of unkempt facial hair. He is a graduate of Texas A&M University living in Fort Worth, Texas, with his wife, Taylor, and their dogs, Bear and Timber. He spent many summers hiking along the Appalachian Trail before working in a Tyler, Texas, hospital and is now an oilfield environmental consultant.

If you like zombies, read it ... If you like humans better, read it

I have to admit that this is the first zombie novel I have ever read. I wasn't quite sure what to expect, and I was pleasantly surprised. The characters were well rounded and engaging. The action kept me reading. I wasn't dumped into a bizarre and chaotic storyline but given enough back story to orient myself without becoming bored with the details before the zombies even appeared. While a certain degree of gore is to be expected it wasn't a wanton bloodbath that read like the thesaurus entry for entrails either. The characters were human with many of the same worries you and I would have with even the occasional humor (without being crass or at someone's expense as horror humor often is). If you enjoy variety and would like to expand your reading into the zombies/horror/post-apocalyptic genre without sacrificing quality I highly recommend Nathan Harvey's debut novel and eagerly await "the rest of the story."

Not just ANOTHER zombie novel... something new, something different.

There’s nothing better than a good ol’ fashion zombie novel. When done right, it can be a thrilling, emotional ride for fans of that genre, like myself. Nathan E. Harvey’s And the Blood Ran Black is no exception.

It tells the story of John and Moto, two brothers stationed in Puerto Rico (finally! My birthplace mentioned in a book!) during the horrible times of World War 3 (I know! How cool is that?!). But something else, besides falling nukes and gunfire, starts to take place, something sinister and horrible, something that threatens to end humanity as we know it – a zombie apocalypse.

I know what you’re thinking: “Ugh! Another zombie novel? Really?”. Yes, another zombie novel. But, not just any zombie novel. It’s a novel that promises to become something different than what we already have.

The Walking Dead set the bar pretty high in the zombie genre. In my opinion, Resident Evil is a close second and World War Z did a good job with the theme. But this book had something different to it that made it unique and entertaining. I haven’t read any books from the zombie genre, since I have the misconception that nothing can top the Walking Dead. Then I read this book, and it was very, very entertaining. While reading it, I found myself at the edge of my seat, heart pumping as hordes and hordes of zombies surround our heroes, laughing with Moto and venturing inside John’s head. It was quite a ride.

Harvey has a unique way of writing, and a unique way of developing characters. To be honest, I was somewhat bored during the first chapter, since I felt myself lost, trying to grasp what was going on. But the brothers Chow had me hooked and helped me through the first chapter. They were likable and interesting. Moto was goofy and at times hilarious, while John had this innate sense of leadership that was simply fascinating to me. Even though the interaction between the brothers was, at times, weird and unnatural (almost forced, if you ask me), it was still fascinating. They felt like real brothers, everything from their own special connection to the unspoken language and understanding between them. They understood each other well enough without needing to speak, and I liked the book because of it.

So we have a zombie apocalypse novel, a group of unlikely survivors, a sense of dread in the air and, of course, zombies… all in the backdrop of a future where the world fights against the rising power of China. It’s unique in its way, and it offers an array of characters that are likable (or unlikable) the moment they first appear on the page. Harvey also offers an in-depth view of how his imaginative world came to be, from the peace treaty to China’s dreadful rise to power. And to be honest, that little “history lesson” was fascinating. Bravo, Mr. Harvey!

I found the book immensely entertaining. I wouldn’t say that it’s my favorite zombie novel, since I’ve only read two so far, but it was really, really good. It exceeded my expectations in terms of story, writing and characters. Harvey wastes no time in throwing you into the reality of an upcoming zombie apocalypse. You encounter your first zombie in the first few pages. I did like the fact that the book starts with the apocalypse. Usually, the zombie genre throws you into a story that is set in a barren city, years and years after the apocalypse took place. You never get to see the desperation, the chaos and the descent of humanity while all of this is going down – which is why I found Harvey’s book engaging. He throws you into the story, just as the zombies are starting to take over. Also, the book is more realistic. A pet peeve of mine is seeing a movie or watching a TV show about zombies, where the characters have no idea what a zombie is in the first place. I mean, c’mon! Who hasn’t heard of a zombie, these days? Harvey wastes no time there either; he has his characters call the creatures for what they are and discover in a single chapter how they function, which kicks the story in high-gear. At last! A zombie story where the hero doesn’t have to spend half the book trying to do just that.

I did find a few narrative moments where the scene was too… “descriptive”. I don’t mean in a gory way – a zombie book without gore should not be considered a zombie book. But to me, I found it a little unnecessary to describe so MUCH when a character moves from point A to point B. I don’t need two whole paragraphs to know that John and Moto got on a jeep and ran over a zombie. And I also found that, at times, some characters didn’t react accordingly to the given circumstances (a little girl watching a man crack open the skull of a zombie should be traumatized beyond repair… not giggling two hours later). Also, some scenes and decisions didn’t quite make sense to me… they seemed unnatural, as if forced.

Did that ruin the book for me? No! Of course not! The zombies could have sprouted wings and breathed fire, for all I care. The book was great. Entertaining, gory and emotional. Harvey knew how to give the characters depth, especially John, which is what made me stay from beginning to end. John, Moto and all the survivors had something special to them, something unique. The losses were painful, and the story was thrilling. That’s all I ask of a zombie novel: a good story, great characters, unexpected losses, mind-blowing twists, action-packed scenes, gore and, of course, zombies.

Move over, Walking Dead, “And the Blood Ran Black” might be stepping on your heels pretty soon.

And the Blood Ran Black uses the same storyline formula as so many of today’s zombie genre books do. A group of humans are on the run from zombies that seem to have taken over the world. The difference with this book is that the writing is really good and the characters’ relationships are probably the strongest element of the whole story. The book opens with an action packed sequence that is worthy of any movie and it keeps the reading turning the pages. The main characters, John and Moto, are brothers who are soldiers fighting for the United States and stationed in Puerto Rico. The author gives a lengthy yet interesting explanation as to how and why the war with China got its start. It’s somewhat scary because, aside from the zombies, everything else could conceivably happen. The character development in this book is some of the best I have ever read. The core relationship, that of the two brothers, is realistic and, ultimately, heart-breaking. The author manages to make the reader feel what the characters are feeling, so near the end of the book I was sniffling just a bit. There are a lot of characters which, in some books, can be confusing but not in this one. They are slowly introduced and developed throughout. That is, if they survive long enough. There’s also some romance, about as much as can be expected when the characters are spending every second looking over their shoulder for zombies. The author infuses some humor into the story which helped to lighten the mood in a fairly dark book. The ending was surprising for me but left the story open for (hopefully) a sequel. The title of the book is what first drew my attention but the cover is quite eye catching as well. The digital version of the book formatted to my ereader very well and the editing was excellent. This is a typical zombie book that is well worth reading.
