OUTSTANDING Elementary Teaching Resource
By K. G. Wright
As an educator who has worked at the elementary, secondary and higher education levels, I highly recommend the book Sand Dune Daisy: A Pocket Mouse Tale, especially to elementary teachers, librarians, counselors and administrators. Its hardcover binding is built for the kind of abuse expected for a favorite classroom narrative.
It is perfect for parents or elementary teachers planning vacations or field trips to the desert; the story of Daisy teaches children about sand dune environments through the narrative of a pocket mouse making her way through a day of adventure, and it would prime kids' curiosity before encountering the reality of Daisy's world.
The book would make a GREAT addition to a teacher's reading resources anywhere in the world, for example as part of a desert environment unit, or in a rodent themed reading center or unit.
As someone lucky enough to reside near The Great Sand Dunes National Park in Colorado, I'm very appreciative of a book that primes young minds about such unique, beautiful, and valuable natural resources; as a past seasonal interpretive park ranger, natural resource protection is very important to me (and to all of us), so I am thrilled by this book's potential to increase children's curiosity, knowledge, and appreciation of Daisy and her amazing environment. A big thanks to the author, illustrator, and publisher for making this available.
The attached pic is from one of my past summer drives into the park (Mt. Herard is the snow covered mountain behind the dune field). If you look really closely, you might be able to see the front entrances to some of Daisy's relatives' homes. ;)
