Adventure and Romance! These Books are Highly Recommended!

Author, journalist and storm chaser Chris Kridler has recently released her Storm Seekers Trilogy in an individual package. Although each book is a separate adventure, they form a nice unit that can be read in sequence with recurring characters and themes. These are exciting novels that transport the reader into the storm chasing world. Ms. Kridler adroitly combines adventure and romance with her cast of wanderers across Tornado Alley.
In the first book, Funnel Vision, Jack Andreas is a PhD candidate and member of a large research team of meteorologists who are chasing tornadoes and "gorilla" hail. Obsessed with tornadoes, he passes the time between storm seasons with drinking and brief affairs. There are sisters Judy and Shannon Hale who are scarred from their own early experience with a storm in Kansas. Judy is an introspective wedding photographer and Shannon a beautiful coquette. Slightly geeky web designer Robinson drives out to Tornado Alley from Maryland every year to chase storms with a group of friends. There is also Brad Treat, a clueless storm chase tour leader with his first group of tourists and Marcus, a rumpled long-haired graduate student who had never seen a tornado because he was always sent into the storm to collect hail. This motley group interacts in unexpected and interesting ways as they traverse the Great Plains. There is romance both on the chase and between storm seasons. At times, Funnel Vision is amusing and at other times, sad. Like a storm, the unexpected can happen. Ms. Kridler's detailed descriptions capture the beauty and power of not just the tornadoes but also the wind-swept landscape of the American heartland. She is an experienced storm chaser and this shows through the accuracy of her writings yet she does not get bogged down in technical jargon

The second book, "Tornado Pinball" is an enjoyable and sometimes quite funny adventure as a motley group of media types and storm chasers track storms across Tornado Alley and attempt to plant a human tornado probe. There is a rival production crew with a washed-up adventure TV host also chasing tornadoes with a drone. They find romance and rivalries along the way as they overcome unexpected and amusing complications. There are other returning characters including a storm chasing couple who are triggering lightning strikes with rockets. As with the first book, Ms. Kridler really conveys the awesome sublime beauty of the storms that cross the American Plains. "Tornado Pinball" is quite entertaining. The outrageous, almost satirical concept of a human tornado probe is entirely possible, and it is a commentary on what production companies will attempt for ratings
Ms. Kridler ends her Storm-Seekers trilogy with a “Zap Bang.” A storm chaser joins a lightning research project funded by an eccentric billionaire. The chaser is paired with a veteran and pilot who will fly a refurbished A-10 Warthog as a part of the coordinated storm chase. Also out chasing is a group filming a reality TV show, “Zany Weddings” including a less-than-honest storm chaser and an adventure television host. Adding to the mix of interesting characters is a wandering hippie who drives a food truck and dispenses philosophy with his tasty food as he tracks storms and storm chasers. All these people converge for an entertaining, scary and sometimes funny romp across Tornado Alley. There is adventure and romance and some have hidden agendas. Ms. Kridler accurately portrays the beauty and danger of the American Plains during storm season along with the difficulty of the chaser lifestyle. It is not all glamor and often the need for money will override rational decisions. The pace is quick. Her characters are strong. Some are not likeable but are at least interesting and funny. As the third book in a trilogy, there are returning and new characters. I highly recommend the Storm Seekers trilogy. One does not have to be a storm chaser to enjoy these books. A bit of caution: Don’t start in the late evening as you’ll be sucked in and will stay up too late reading these books.

Kridler's Storm Seekers Trilogy Boxed Set makes for a terrific apres-holiday read, especially if you had some stormy weather (literally or metaphorically) over the past two weeks and need a rapid escape method. Beginning with Funnel Vision, Kridler's fast-paced books combine tornado-chase scenes, nuanced romance and sex subplots, believable, quirky characters, and superb descriptions of nature's sudden cataclysms and ever-changing sky phenomena. She writes with equally honed skill about science, technology, relationship angst or spiritual dilemma, with a deft comedic tone when it comes to the often absurd human side of things. Kridler is a keen observer of life and its rude complexities. No telling what she'll do next.

Adventures in Tornado Alley Await

If you are interested in reading "Funnel Vision," you certainly should just go ahead and buy the whole trilogy in this value-packed set. You won't be able to put the books down, and will be very glad you had the 2nd and 3rd books in the series. The novels appeal to lovers of all genres -- adventure, drama, romance and more. My knowledge of storm chasing adventures was limited prior to reading the trilogy, but it is so well written that even those not familiar with the intricacies of the hobbies or careers of those thrill-seekers can't help but be fascinated!
