The latest novel by author John Lyman, Prelude to Dystopia, is a fast paced thriller that focuses on the brimming panic of mass extinction. A calamity on a global scale which we have only experienced through textbooks and documentaries.
Lyman considers all the factors, then pitches them at his reluctant hero. A man who suffers from panic, anxiety, OCD, germophobia, to list only a few. The story quickly becomes about a stricken character faced with knowledge and choices that could save himself and those he loves.
Though set against the certainty of an impending apocalypse, the story instead follows the fears, choices and challenges faced by Ben Swain, a journalist living in present day Atlanta. He gets the sassy, adorable girl (as well as her calm, loving cat!) and what appears to be the story of a lifetime. Only that story becomes a litany, a list of all the ways that civilization will collapse and what the powers in control are willing to do to preserve it. Suddenly, Ben is embroiled in the machinations of the military and the government and their attempt to save those things which they deem salvageable.
“Prelude” is not an accusing read. Lyman does nothing to persuade the reader of the rights or wrongs our civilization has committed. Rather, he sets up the playing field and sits back and asks “What would you do?”
Would we “rat out” the forces in control? Would we run for the hills? Laugh and go on with our life, ignoring the warning? Would we let our fears and anxieties overwhelm us to the point of ineptitude? Ben must face all of this, and through him Lyman allows us, the reader, to journey this path as well, asking these questions of ourselves.
What can one person to do to alter the fate of the world?
More importantly, Lyman forces the reader to ask themselves “What truly matters, in this life?”

A page turning thrill ride with great characters and plenty of twists! A+

“Prelude to Dystopia” is the newest release from John Lyman. With this book, Lyman continues to spread his literary wings as he writes in a slightly different genre than anything he’s done in the past. This story takes place in modern day Atlanta and circles around a man named Ben Swain. Swain is an OCD germaphobe who lives in an upscale high rise apartment. He is an aspiring author who writes for the local newspaper while he waits for his career as an author to take off. Ben’s life changes drastically one day when he meets up with a mysterious man known simply as “the General”. The General claims to have information to share with Ben of utmost importance but before he can divulge anything, Ben must sign a complete non-disclosure form. After some debate, Ben signs the form. From there, Ben and his girlfriend Emily (and their cat) are sucked into a world of mystery and danger where not only do their lives hang in the balance – but quite possibly the whole worlds.
This book caught me completely off guard. Usually going into a story, the reader has some idea of where the book is going, what the end game is going to be, and who the major players are. This is the first time in recent memory I have been halfway through a book and still didn’t know where we were going. Lyman does an amazing job of progressing the story and developing the characters without giving away anything about where he’s taking you. I was never bored or sorry to be “in the dark”. Even without knowing where the story was going, Ben’s character was so funny, and the General so intriguing, that I kept burning through the pages. Once I finally got a hold on what was really happening, it felt like I was on a roller coaster that was headed for the first big barrel roll.
For those who are not environmentally conscience or who don’t care to hear about the “green” agenda, the first few chapters of the book may sound a little “preachy” to you. But fear not. Lyman is not trying to push some left-wing ideology on you; he is simply setting up the story. If you’ll continue through, you will be rewarded with a very exciting and original story that will keep you up late at night reading. I read the book in two days. It’s really hard to put down. This book is fantastic and as much as I loved the overall story and its twists and turns, I think my favorite part was getting to see the relationship between Ben and Emily develop and to watch Ben’s own journey of self discovery as he’s able to put into perspective the things that are really important in life.
Is this Lyman’s best book to date? I don’t know, maybe. It’s definitely a page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. 5 out of 5. A+

Well, it’s happened, again. John Lyman’s new book, “Prelude to Dystopia” is the beginning of a marvelous set rivaling his own “God’s Lion”. Equally entertaining, Lyman is also proposing what life would be like if there was a global catastrophe. Read during a year where people are frustrated with politics and the system as a whole, this book forces one to think, “What if?”.
Lyman’s characters cover a vast sampling of types. From news reporters to psychotics and generals to government agents, Mr. Lyman creates characters that slowly and meticulously reveal themselves. Carefully researched as usual, John Lyman paints a picture where society is literally blasted into the past and has to press the “reset” button on life itself. With a magician’s skill, Lyman leads you to one conclusion then quickly presents another. The action is non-stopped and it is difficult to put the book down. I found myself reading into the wee morning hours yawning but incapable of stopping.
It is at this point that Lyman’s skills will determine whether or not he is a great writer or just a popular writer. Keeping in mind that our classical heroes learn and develop through suffering and sacrifices, Mr. Lyman has started off this series with a well-developed sense of adventure. This “adventure” is meticulously merged with serious issues that confront our modern world. Using his unique writing style, Mr. Lyman addresses the psychological make-up of the human person that motivates his decisions that engages him with his planet. It is this serious side of his writing that captivates me. It makes me think and it entertains. If you wish an enjoyable evening that moves you to think, then I urge you to buy his books and relax as he takes you on a great adventure while forcing you to realize where this society is headed. This is indeed a prelude. It’s a prelude to a society and Earth that will eventually arrive.
