A Book Too Far

I pretty much am on board with the prior 5 reviews. I read all three of the books over a weekend. The first was interesting and I liked the characters. These weren't "preppers" - they were "mega-preppers" as their gear includes two Hummers with .50 cal turrets. These Hummers also appear to be the station wagon model since they hold an amazing amount of stuff on their trips around the area where they have holed up or moved later in the series. Apocalyptic events, the worst in men coming out, cute meets between hard edged survivalists and gorgeous women - all the usual fare. Unless Frost has no spell check and no literate friends to look over his books before publishing there is no excuse for the spelling and grammar errors. The dialogue is very stilted - it's like a 1935 Western movie script.

The story is predictable given the setup but Frost does keep my interest in books one and two and I thought they were worth the money. In Book 3 things get a little silly and as pointed out in prior reviews the ending is right up there with the worst ending I can recall - he spends three books developing characters and back stories and trying to make us care about his cast and then wraps it up in two pages. For the price books one and two are OK. Don't read book three or you will want to track down Frost in his own Haven and demand your $2.99 back.

Interesting storyline, but very difficult to read.

Interesting storyline, but very difficult to read. The new Madrid series seriously needed an editor. It was almost as bad as one of those paragraphs on Facebook entitled "If you can rad this....." Not just spelling but grammar and punctuation as well. Sometimes I had to read a sentence two or three times to be sure what was being said.

That stated, the story was definitely interesting. Right up until the end, that is. It was as if the writer got tired and said, well, that's it, I'm done. Considering the amount of details we had to read through on subjects that had absolutely nothing to do with the story, it was definitely a strange way to end, and terribly unsatisfying.

I doubt very much that I will read anything else by this author, unless the write up include a statement that he has employed an editor. I'd also like a guarantee that he will give more thought to his ending.

Great story line, but very poor grammar and word usage.

The author is a really good wordcrafter with a great imagination, but with a 4th grade command of grammar, tense, and word usage. I would love to read more good books by this author , if only he would get an English teacher to review the writing and edit the words.
Instead of reading excitedly at a stead pace, like cruising down a well paved highway, there are so many grammatical errors that it is like cruising down a washboard country road.
It is obvious the author doesn't read the reviews about this book, which is a shame.

Great illustrations & interesting poems

With Valentine’s Day right around the corner, I just had to get my hands on this novel. “Love poems to rip your heart out, “now there’s a caption that makes you stop in your tracks. The black-and-white photos that adorned the cover sets the tone for what awaits for you inside. The human heart that sits pooling in its own blood, speared by the feathered arrow, Romantically Disturbed’s cover was beautifully done. This being a YA nonfiction novel, I thought I could entice some of my fellow students to perhaps fall for some poetic views this Valentine’s Day but I, myself was having a hard time finding something inside these pages to read to them. There is quite a variety inside but perhaps it was my own maturity level that was having a hard time justifying the poems that were written on the pages. I found some of the poems fantastic but then some of them lacked substance. The age of the person reading this book could be anywhere from second grade to middle school based on this information. I found the book confusing as some of the poems were simple and without substance and others had a fantastic story and were intense. As I read some of the poems to a group of sixth graders, some of them were disgusted with it (what I wanted to occur), some saw the poem unfolding and others where lost and I had to try to explain where the author was going with it.
I liked the poem titled The Ring and its illustration. The illustrations grossed me out a bit but it perfectly matches the poem describing a woman whose eyes are set on the ring that her fiancé is giving her. She is deaf to everything he says as her eyes are glued on the beautiful ring. “This ring, it means forever, so-“and later unfortunately her husband dies and now she comments, “Forever,” she said. “Forever, I know-“and the ring, well she wanted to ring and now, she has it forever! I also liked the poem One Wish. In this poem the genie grants a boy one wish but the boy wasn’t too specific when he made his wish and someone is paying the price for his mistake. The boy… he wants another wish.
I was disappointed in the book as I was hoping to find the poems creepy and eerie and there were only a few that fit into this style for me. The illustrations, the majority of them were fantastic! The illustrations saved the book for me, the black-and-white sketches by Adam Watkins were creepy and detailed and I loved looking at them. I ended up sharing the illustrations with the sixth graders and they really enjoyed them. Their imaginations were going as I asked them what they saw in them and it would have been a perfect opportunity for them to write their own poems, had we had time. The illustrator using only black, white and grays as he created, casting an terrifying element on the page with fortune-tellers, hearts, humans and zombies, just to mention a few. It’s a book that is definitely worth checking out.

A Great Resource for You and Your New, or More 'Experienced' Pets

There are many benefits to living in Central Oregon. Aside from the miles of open countryside, the sincere and relaxed nature of the people who live here, there is special-ness that comes from small town life.

In central Oregon – Sisters, Oregon we still have a small town newspaper with local news and local columnists that help give the area a special feeling.

Jodi Schneider McNamee has been contributing a weekly newspaper column centered on household pets, their care, their habits, instincts and training … including ideas about nurturing them indoors to protecting them when they are outside – encountering the ‘open countryside.’ When the paper comes each week, most of my friends head to her column before reading anything else.

Jodi has a practical understanding of pets, her compassion for them is clear and her insights are valuable.

I had the chance to spend time with the book at a local retailer this weekend and am sorry I only discovered it after the holidays … I think it would be the perfect gift for anyone who loves their pets and cares enough to understand them. Maybe there will be some surprise ‘after holiday’ gifts for my friends and family.

Raising Rover makes the perfect gift for pet parents. The chapters are as informative as they are entertaining. Solutions to common issues like separation anxiety and barking to lesser-known information like The Yellow Dog Project. The chapters are easy to nibble away at when you have a few minutes and get right to the point. I especially love the dog photographs that begin each chapter. The book is an unbiased intuitively structured "Bible" for new or experienced dog owners. It reads more like a storybook than an instruction manual and I very much enjoyed that. Again, the perfect "Gotcha Day" gift for the forever families of any age dog. LOVE the affordable price!

Fun AND educational!

After giving my nephew Moon Patrol and seeing his little face just light up, I decided to see if this author had any other interesting books for kids. Luckily, he'd just released this awesome coloring book! I haven't yet given it to my nephew (it's going to be a Christmas present, along with some colored pencils), but I think it's so cool that I want one for myself now! I will update this review with his reaction.

It is rare for me to give out 5 stars for a book but I couldn't find any reasons not to give it that rating.....so it goes without saying that this book was really great!

Even though this is meant for a younger audience, I found myself speeding through it to know how it would turn out. It was packed with action and mystery. I do have to say it was all predictable but I think that for a younger reader the mystery would hold out a little longer.

It was good clean fun that I can let my kids read and that's one of the main reasons I gave it 5 stars. It's hard to find books these days that fit that description. I thought the writing was good and the characters were endearing. I am assuming there will be a 2nd one so it'll be fun to read more about Dodie Rue!

I was hooked from page one!

In a time when children's literature is changing, not always for the better, this book was a refreshing treat! From page one I was hooked by the characters, the world, and the struggles of Dodie Rue. It is a fast pace exciting read as the underdog learns to trust himself, trust others, and face his fears. The magical world that F.C. Shaw created is fantastic, and I love how she weaves important lessons all children should learn. She is a very talented writer, and I can't wait for the next book!

Hold on to your tassels because you’re about to take a wild, magical carpet ride. F. C. Shaw has created a fast-paced story that makes you want to keep reading chapter after chapter to find out what happens next. The setting is exotic and the main character is a wonderful young boy who steps up to become the reluctant hero of the tale. Kids will love the adventure but they’ll also spend some time with worthwhile characters who teach us what true courage looks like. Exciting and inspiring!

Great narration as well as a unique plot

Revocare is the first story that I have read by the author, Leslie Fish, but I’m sure that it will not be the last.

What I admire most about this story is how well the narration of the protagonist is throughout the entirety of the read. I often find it hard to become immersed in short stories and often instead prefer a moderately lengthy build-up to the setting and the characters. With Revocare, the situation was different as the reader is thrown right into the midst of the plot, and although this could have went drastically either way, I think it worked so well due to the aforementioned style of the writing. Definitely worth checking out for those interested in a quick read.

I'm about halfway through the book so far, and it draws you in from the very start. It's a unique story with interesting plots. The character development and back-stories are excellent. The balance between narrative and action is very good, and the fight sequences are well-written without being overdone (I can't imagine that they would be easy to write). I've been having a difficult time putting it down.

I have only read a small portion of this book, but I have enjoyed what I've read so far. Small but important details such as wishing for a hairbrush provide insights into both the character and the author. I am eager to read more and I will post a more detailed comment (or edit this one) when I have read more of the book. Based on what I've read so far, I highly recommend this book.

The latest novel by author John Lyman, Prelude to Dystopia, is a fast paced thriller that focuses on the brimming panic of mass extinction. A calamity on a global scale which we have only experienced through textbooks and documentaries.
Lyman considers all the factors, then pitches them at his reluctant hero. A man who suffers from panic, anxiety, OCD, germophobia, to list only a few. The story quickly becomes about a stricken character faced with knowledge and choices that could save himself and those he loves.
Though set against the certainty of an impending apocalypse, the story instead follows the fears, choices and challenges faced by Ben Swain, a journalist living in present day Atlanta. He gets the sassy, adorable girl (as well as her calm, loving cat!) and what appears to be the story of a lifetime. Only that story becomes a litany, a list of all the ways that civilization will collapse and what the powers in control are willing to do to preserve it. Suddenly, Ben is embroiled in the machinations of the military and the government and their attempt to save those things which they deem salvageable.
“Prelude” is not an accusing read. Lyman does nothing to persuade the reader of the rights or wrongs our civilization has committed. Rather, he sets up the playing field and sits back and asks “What would you do?”
Would we “rat out” the forces in control? Would we run for the hills? Laugh and go on with our life, ignoring the warning? Would we let our fears and anxieties overwhelm us to the point of ineptitude? Ben must face all of this, and through him Lyman allows us, the reader, to journey this path as well, asking these questions of ourselves.
What can one person to do to alter the fate of the world?
More importantly, Lyman forces the reader to ask themselves “What truly matters, in this life?”

A page turning thrill ride with great characters and plenty of twists! A+

“Prelude to Dystopia” is the newest release from John Lyman. With this book, Lyman continues to spread his literary wings as he writes in a slightly different genre than anything he’s done in the past. This story takes place in modern day Atlanta and circles around a man named Ben Swain. Swain is an OCD germaphobe who lives in an upscale high rise apartment. He is an aspiring author who writes for the local newspaper while he waits for his career as an author to take off. Ben’s life changes drastically one day when he meets up with a mysterious man known simply as “the General”. The General claims to have information to share with Ben of utmost importance but before he can divulge anything, Ben must sign a complete non-disclosure form. After some debate, Ben signs the form. From there, Ben and his girlfriend Emily (and their cat) are sucked into a world of mystery and danger where not only do their lives hang in the balance – but quite possibly the whole worlds.

This book caught me completely off guard. Usually going into a story, the reader has some idea of where the book is going, what the end game is going to be, and who the major players are. This is the first time in recent memory I have been halfway through a book and still didn’t know where we were going. Lyman does an amazing job of progressing the story and developing the characters without giving away anything about where he’s taking you. I was never bored or sorry to be “in the dark”. Even without knowing where the story was going, Ben’s character was so funny, and the General so intriguing, that I kept burning through the pages. Once I finally got a hold on what was really happening, it felt like I was on a roller coaster that was headed for the first big barrel roll.

For those who are not environmentally conscience or who don’t care to hear about the “green” agenda, the first few chapters of the book may sound a little “preachy” to you. But fear not. Lyman is not trying to push some left-wing ideology on you; he is simply setting up the story. If you’ll continue through, you will be rewarded with a very exciting and original story that will keep you up late at night reading. I read the book in two days. It’s really hard to put down. This book is fantastic and as much as I loved the overall story and its twists and turns, I think my favorite part was getting to see the relationship between Ben and Emily develop and to watch Ben’s own journey of self discovery as he’s able to put into perspective the things that are really important in life.

Is this Lyman’s best book to date? I don’t know, maybe. It’s definitely a page turner and I thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. 5 out of 5. A+

Well, it’s happened, again. John Lyman’s new book, “Prelude to Dystopia” is the beginning of a marvelous set rivaling his own “God’s Lion”. Equally entertaining, Lyman is also proposing what life would be like if there was a global catastrophe. Read during a year where people are frustrated with politics and the system as a whole, this book forces one to think, “What if?”.
Lyman’s characters cover a vast sampling of types. From news reporters to psychotics and generals to government agents, Mr. Lyman creates characters that slowly and meticulously reveal themselves. Carefully researched as usual, John Lyman paints a picture where society is literally blasted into the past and has to press the “reset” button on life itself. With a magician’s skill, Lyman leads you to one conclusion then quickly presents another. The action is non-stopped and it is difficult to put the book down. I found myself reading into the wee morning hours yawning but incapable of stopping.
It is at this point that Lyman’s skills will determine whether or not he is a great writer or just a popular writer. Keeping in mind that our classical heroes learn and develop through suffering and sacrifices, Mr. Lyman has started off this series with a well-developed sense of adventure. This “adventure” is meticulously merged with serious issues that confront our modern world. Using his unique writing style, Mr. Lyman addresses the psychological make-up of the human person that motivates his decisions that engages him with his planet. It is this serious side of his writing that captivates me. It makes me think and it entertains. If you wish an enjoyable evening that moves you to think, then I urge you to buy his books and relax as he takes you on a great adventure while forcing you to realize where this society is headed. This is indeed a prelude. It’s a prelude to a society and Earth that will eventually arrive.

Treasure Island is an adventure novel by Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson, narrating a tale of "buccaneers and buried gold". It was originally serialized in the children's magazine Young Folks between 1881 and 1882 under the title Treasure Island, or the mutiny of the Hispaniola, with Stevenson adopting the pseudonym Captain George North. It was first published as a book on 14 November 1883 by Cassell & Co. Treasure Island is traditionally considered a coming-of-age story, and is noted for its atmosphere, characters, and action. It is also noted as a wry commentary on the ambiguity of morality—as seen in Long John Silver—unusual for children's literature. It is one of the most frequently dramatized of all novels. Its influence is enormous on popular perceptions of pirates, including such elements as treasure maps marked with an "X", schooners, the Black Spot, tropical islands, and one-legged seamen bearing parrots on their shoulders.

Grade 6-10-- The striking jacket of this new edition of an old classic promises more than it delivers. Thirty-one plates, full-color but predominantly in earth-tone hues, are dropped into the text, sometimes mindlessly. For example, the cover art, a pirate digging in sand among pieces of eight, reappears on page 61, facing text that sketches the lives of pirates, "gentlemen of fortune." The text never relates to the art. Ingpen's style is impressionistic but evocative of N. C. Wyeth's illustrations for the same title (Scribners, 1911, reissued by Time Warner, 1992); his plate of Blind Pow shows the subject in much the same pose. In some paintings, Ingpen uses angle and perspective effectively; interest is added by superimposing people upon background, or vice-versa. Spot line drawings, some used more than once, accent many pages. Unfortunately, in some cases, a subject is not recognizable from one page to the next, and the hazy impressionistic style makes it difficult to interpret some pictures. The story is told through the eyes of brave cabin boy Jim, who fights off the murderous pirates and bonds with their one-legged leader, Long John Silver. Wyeth's thrilling, handsomely reproduced paintings, originally done in 1911, will attract a variety of readers, including some older high-schoolers. In dark shades of brown and red, the pictures focus on the grim, exciting struggle on board the ship and on the island. At the same time, there's a burning golden glow in the background of almost every scene, keeping readers in mind of the treasure that drives the wild action. A Great Introduction to Classic Literature

I am a high school English teacher, and I am a huge fan of the original Treasure Island. That said, I love the Classic Start series as a mother who believes in introducing my children to the classics from a very early age. I began using the series with my daughter when she was five. We have read Black Beauty, The Little Princess, Heidi, and Pollyanna to name a few, so I am very familiar with the content of the series, and I keep coming back for more.

My son just turned six. There is no way that he would be able to sit through nor understand the original, but with this abridged version, he not only becomes familiar with the story, he falls in love with it as well. We began reading Treasure Island last night, and he begged for more and more. Finally, after six chapters I insisted that I needed to read to his older sister. While I did, this little kindegartner slugged through another chapter, struggling over every word to try to get more of the story. I couldn't have been more thrilled; that is the love of reading and the love of good literature with which I am trying to bless my children.

Classic Starts are a fantastic way to begin, in my opinion. I see no difference between a beginning pianist first learning an easy version of a classical piano concerto and a young reader first introduced to an abridged version of a classic that, in it's original form would be above both his context and vocabulary level. I am sure that when my son does encounter the original, and he will--I'll make sure of that--he will not only be more ready, he will be more excited to get the rest of the story, thanks to his familiarity with and fondness for Billy Bones, Jim, and Long John Silver. Beware - this version is heavily abridged.

This title is heavily abridged and aimed at children but, the Amazon title doesn't tell you this. From the inside cover of the book:

"This Great classic for Children by Dalmation press has been carefully condensed and adapted from the original version ... We kept the well-known phrases for you. We kept the author's style. And we kept the important imagery and heart of the tale."

With its large font and many illustrations the book comes out to 181 pages; whereas, the Sterling Classic unabridged with its regular sized font and no illustrations comes out to 232 pages. This gives an indication of how condensed this version is.

This one has its place as a kids version and should be clearly marked as such.

Yo ho ho, and a bottle of rum!

Treasure Island is perhaps THE classic pirate's tale. Robert Louis Stevenson, the author, created a rich story of adventure and treachery on the high seas all seen through the eyes of a boy named Jim Hawkins. Jim starts off as the son of tavern owners in a humble little port village. When an old seaman stays at the tavern, trouble soon follows him in the form of a pirate crew seeking revenge. I will not give away any more specific plot points, but events move forward to a great treasure hunt, treachery, and a surprisingly engaging story for adults as well as children.

Jim Hawkins is the hero of the story and he's a good lad with a stout heart. Long John Silver is the real star, however, and his character is a fascinating character study in moral ambiguity... or perhaps a study in amoral perfection. The pirate language is good and thick but this edition has plenty of notes to help you decipher some of the references that have become too obscure for today's readers. The plot moves along very briskly with no wasted scenes.

In short, Treasure Island well deserves its status as a beloved classic. It's a story of suspense and adventure that can be enjoyed at a child's level, but has substance for adults as well. I would recommend without reserve it to virtually anyone.

About the Author
Marion Zimmer was born in Albany, NY, on June 3, 1930, and married Robert Alden Bradley in 1949. Mrs. Bradley received her B.A. in 1964 from Hardin Simmons University in Abilene, Texas, then did graduate work at the University of California, Berkeley, from 1965-67. She was a science fiction/fantasy fan from her middle teens, and made her first sale as an adjunct to an amateur fiction contest in Fantastic/Amazing Stories in 1949. She had written as long as she could remember, but wrote only for school magazines and fanzines until 1952, when she sold her first professional short story to Vortex Science Fiction. She wrote everything from science fiction to Gothics, but is probably best known for her Darkover novels. In addition to her novels, Mrs. Bradley edited many magazines, amateur and professional, including Marion Zimmer Bradley's Fantasy Magazine, which she started in 1988. She also edited an annual anthology called Sword and Sorceress for DAW Books. Over the years she turned more to fantasy; The House Between the Worlds, although a selection of the Science Fiction Book Club, was "fantasy undiluted". She wrote a novel of the women in the Arthurian legends - Morgan Le Fay, the Lady of the Lake, and others - entitled Mists of Avalon, which made the NY Times best seller list both in hardcover and trade paperback, and she also wrote The Firebrand, a novel about the women of the Trojan War. Her historical fantasy novels, The Forest House, Lady of Avalon, Mists of Avalon are prequels to Priestess of Avalon She died in Berkeley, California on September 25, 1999, four days after suffering a major heart attack. She was survived by her brother, Leslie Zimmer; her sons, David Bradley and Patrick Breen; her daughter, Moira Stern; and her grandchildren.

The Beginning of a Delightful Series

I have read all MZB's Darkover novels, and actually the Trailmen are discussed in one more novel, though I don't remember which one. The idea of Darkover was by no means fully developed when this book was written, but the roots were there, and the characters show up later as adults in fully developed and very good books written decades later. I strongly recommend that SF/F fans read this book; if you haven't yet discovered Darkover (though I find that unbelievable), this is a good introduction before you try to jump to The Forbidden Tower, which is an awfully long jump. I try to sort out which books are set in the Age of Chaos, which during the Terran occupation, and which after the Terrans leave and read that way, as MZB didn't write them in any kind of order and admits herself that her geography and history are somewhat muddled.

Buy it. Read it. If you don't enjoy this one, you have no imagination whatever and should distance yourself from science fiction, fantasy, and psychology.

Especially psychology.

An interesting story for you Darkover fans...

Nobody had reviewed this book, so I thought I would. This was one of the first Darkover books I read, and I enjoyed it very much. The Darkover books seem to vary in quality from slightly interesting to absolutely fabulous, but I'd rate this one as very good. It was first written in 1962, so it's a little dated, but the main character was interesing and it gives true Darkover fans some insights into some little-explored areas of Darkovan life.

What a great buy. I read this many years ago and it is still well worth a 2nd,3rd or 4th read. Would have a lot of trouble trying the bookstores to get a hold of a copy. Thanks Amazon.
