Get ready to be transported to a whole new world of fantasy!

t’s everyone’s dream, especially a young child, to imagine that they are special, that they have some hidden latent talent just waiting to be discovered. That despite their clumsiness, odd antics or lack of friends, there is something that they can excel at. It brings wonder and excitement, and that is what I felt M K Drake brought to his debut novel, which will be fleshed out into a whole series of books.
The story follows the well-trodden path of a young child who is “The Chosen One” who holds the potential to change the fate of mankind against almighty demons and magical entities. While it might seem cliché at first, where you might well be rolling your eyes, there’s a reason why such classic premises are so favourable with readers: Good vs Evil, Heroes vs Villains, underdogs vs legendary enemies.
The first few chapters attempt to bring some context to the world: a familiar modern real world that we live in, but glimpses of magical power and demonic influences surround us all that only a few are lucky/cursed enough to be able to sense and control it. Drake sets up the scene and background in a way that initially confused me and felt somewhat slow, but by chapter three, it was pretty much lead foot on the gas pedal from there on!
Take for example the Diary entries and historic chronicle extracts interspersed throughout the story: While initially this contributed to the aforementioned early confusion, it is consistent throughout that it provides some contextual history to the world, the characters, and meaning to it all. This made me fondly recall a book called “The Complete Guide to Middle Earth”, where it was a reference encyclopedia to absolutely everything, from how Gandalf became Gandalf, the whole family tree of Bilbo Baggins, to the development and history of the Elvish language! I suspect that Drake’s world of Atticus and the Majjai Six can similarly contain such rich history and purpose to everyone and everything. The interplay of personalities between the lead character and his fellow Majjai is good and often intentionally comical, a welcome break from the seriousness of demonic deathmatches.
The pacing of the story builds up to a breathtaking pace, with battles breathed upon with care and detail, where its effortless to visualise the cinematic actions. One can only wonder with anticipation and hope if this will be fleshed out onto the silver screen. If there is, I sure hope there will be an IMAX 3D version!
[SPOILER ALERT!! Skip to CLOSING SUMMARY if you wish]
There is one part in the story where there is a critical life-changing event against his family, and one that is truly tragic and stressful. Or it should be. The story however never did quite round out the psychological trauma that this should have affected Atticus. He may be a young hero in the making, and is already learning at an accelerated pace (how that’s done is a marvellous creative thought!) but the stress never hit him like you would expect. Perhaps it is his full awareness that there is a more ominous task ahead that he needs to stay focused on, but there it is. I did wonder whether a tad bit more research into the actual psychological impact such events really have on people, might help to make that part more believable. This is a fantasy novel, not the British Medical Journal, so maybe it could be excused, but its that little tiny scratch on a wonderful display of storytelling that I just can’t ignore. But I have read some other novels that bring such well-researched history to even the tiniest of actions, that it transcends into a virtually tactile experience.

CLOSING SUMMARY:
I think that this is a very brave and enjoyable debut for a budding storyteller. This series promises much and delivers a lot. I get the impression that book one is very much a scene-setter for the wider story in the following, and while most might think that its too long or tedious to dedicate such a long prelude to the meat of the story, bear in mind that The Hobbit itself is a similar prelude to the magnum opus of The Lord Of The Rings, yet it was also a self-contained story in itself. Atticus & The Orb Of Time should be commended for its merits of breathing life into a new fantasy character, within a living world that has wizards, warriors, dragons and (no dungeons… yet) demons all fleshed with personalities. The potential is there and its sizzling with excitement. I’m certain that the storytelling experience can only get better as M.K. Drake builds upon his experience, and I’m so looking forward to seeing what happens next in book two!
