Orlos, the young spiridus, is tormented by dreams of the ancient massacre of his race. His discovery of a mystical tomb draws him into a dangerous plot to overthrow a queen.

Each book gets better and better
By Bonnie-Ann
This exceptional novel could be subtitled "Hadde's Heir." The world of Landomere and Salador re-opens fifteen years after the events of Child of the Knight and focuses on the two now-teen children, Enna and Orlos. The dynamic of teenagers with important powers and heavy responsibilities is woven throughout the story. Their internal struggles drive the events. Their reactions to events make this novel real; both characters are growing onto their roles despite themselves. As the parent of a teen, their reactions to situations felt natural.
The author is very clear on his philosophy from the outset: you need to read the first two books to fully enjoy the third. This is true, but I think this novel also stands alone with sufficient explanations in the storyline to help the reader understand the background. Luckily, I knew this was Heppe's writing style so I re-read Child of the Knight a few weeks before I got my hands on Shadow of the Knight. I was initially surprised by the addition of a whole new world: that of Healers and demons. The new empire is represented by a young woman named Telea who is forced into her role as an ambassador to seek help for her people. Again, the theme of a younger apprentice-aged person needing to step up and reach her potential is strong and well-written.
Matt Heppe continues to weave his world and draws his readers into a vividly real fantasy land. I enjoy these books because the writing is beautifully descriptive without taking seven pages to describe a leaf; the story is not overwhelmed by too much visionary drama. The characters act naturally and they speak with emotion but not so much emotion that the reader is rolling her eyes. The new girl sings, but Heppe doesn't fill page after page with created song lyrics. I LOVE that I was able to imagine for myself what the "Song of Hope" might sound like. I love that the two main characters have conflict with their parents (ok... Enna/Ayja absolutely has reasons to think her father is a bit "off"). The creatures are eerily real and pretty scary. This is not a book for the tween reader set -- it's fine for the 14+ reader but I wouldn't recommend for much younger.
I want to see the story continue. I want to know how demons get destroyed and how strong a singer Telea truly is. I want to see what else the Orb can do.

Didn't see that coming....
By R. N. Sulentic
Matt Heppe's third novel in his fantasy series opens 15 years after the end of the story in his 2nd novel--and things have changed in the world.
Events that were "long ago and far away" in the first two novels come back to menace the world like a category 5 hurricane, and "things get out of hand" for characters that will change their lives irrevocably. Trying to save the world, sometimes the choices aren't between good and bad, but between terrible and downright evil, and it's not entirely clear what the difference might be. Heppe is taking the reader on a fascinating journey here, and once the action starts, it doesn't lag.
The characters (some returning, others new) are interesting in their own right, so that one wants to see how it all turns out.

Depth and excitement abound.
By pierretremond
I was anxiously awaiting this third installment of the series, and was not disappointed. With the return of familiar characters and the introduction/development of new ones, the author expands and further details this complex world of divided cultures, strong personal bonds and ancient magical traditions. At the heart of the stories here (as with the previous two novels in the series) are the very human relationships that develop in extraordinary circumstances. Skillfully written, this is a wonderful next step in the ongoing saga. I highly recommend the series to all readers.
