Joel Jenkins Steals The Show

I just finished reading Joel Jenkins’ “The Sun Stealer,” the second book in his Damage Inc. series. Joel had asked me if I would review his book. He didn’t tell me what the book was and I didn’t ask. My answer was yes and I didn’t care what the book was. Joel Jenkins is one of those very few writers that I have had the pleasure of reading most of what he has written. I’ve long ago quit thinking I had a favorite series that he had written. At first I thought I had a favorite, thinking that it was the best of his work, then he wrote a book in another series and it became my favorite. I decided that my favorite book of Joel’s is whatever I am currently reading.
That being said, my new favorite book (until his next book) is “The Sun Stealer”. This book is a collection of four Damage Inc. stories. Who are Damage Inc.? They are Max Damage, Minnie Zhinov and Seth Armstrong. I won’t go into detail of who they are, Joel does a good job of that on the back cover. Just think of Max as a modern day version of Doc Savage with flaws accompanying his super-human abilities. He may be able to see farther and better than anyone else, but the drawback is his eyes are sensitive to light. There are many more abilities and “flaws”, but I’ll let Joel tell you what they are in the book. Minnie is the female version of Max, but without the flaws. Rounding out the team is Seth, who is the accountant of Damage Inc. Seth may not have been “gifted” with the abilities that Max and Minnie have, but he is a very interesting character.
Each story something new is revealed to the team and the reader about Max’s father and the “mess” that he left his company in when he died. Seth, the accountant became a full time member of Damage Inc. when he showed Max how valuable he was. According to Seth, it will take years to sort out the “mess” Max’s father left the company in. Seth has discovered that Max is a millionaire, unless the I.R.S. gets hold of it.
Just to get you curious, if you like ERB, Jungle Queen, and Doc Savage, Joel has a story in the book you will love and will beg him for more. I for one would love to see more of the new character he introduced.
Although this is the second book in the series, it can easily be seen that Joel is just beginning to build the Damage Inc. universe. New friends and foes are introduced in every story. In a few years I believe that Damage Inc. will grow to include more than just the three members now. As it grows I hope to see some of the characters have their own adventures, just like in Joel’s other series.
If you like action, adventure and thrills, this is the book you need to read. Be sure to read the first book in the series, “The Sea Witch.” I plan on rereading my copy. I don’t believe in giving away too much of the story so as not to ruin any surprises, but I give this book two thumbs up. An added bonus is that you don’t have to worry about foul language or sexual situations. Joel Jenkins shows that he doesn’t need them for a very enjoyable book.

Damage Inc is Back!

Five years ago I read a novel called The Sea Witch by Joel Jenkins that introduced me to a trio of misfit adventurers, Maximillion Dommage, a.k.a. Max Damage, a genetically engineered Olympic fencing champion, Winniminah “Minnie” Zhinov, a beautiful martial artist gifted with genetic enhancements as well and the daughter of a Soviet bloc dictator, and Seth Armstrong, an undersized, green-haired chartered accountant who is just a little too feisty and smart for his own good. Together they form Damage Inc, and they get into all sorts of trouble and adventures, much of which stem from the shady, multi-million dollar conglomerate that Max inherited from his deceased father. Pierre Dommage, besides leaving Max with a ton of potential problems with the Internal Revenue Service to deal with, also put him in the dangerous cross-hairs of psychotic corporate rivals, Russian mobsters, international assassins and foreign intelligence services that all want to either get to the bottom of, or to take a piece of the action of the many grandiose business schemes and technological wonders Damage Incorporated and its endless global shell companies and subsidiaries had underway in development. After writing a novel that set the story of Damage Inc into motion, Jenkins this time collects two previously published novellas with two completely new ones and I could not be more delighted. These four action-packed tales continue the story of Max, Minnie and Seth and each is a fast-paced entertaining adventure tale to be thoroughly enjoyed from beginning to end. If you've not yet to read a Damage Inc story, this is the book for you, written by a great author known for his outstanding contributions to the New Pulp and action fiction genre.

Great new Pulp Hero Adventure.

I find this novel to full of fast plots, and endearing characters. It is definitely a pulp hero adventure, similar to Doc Savage, or Thunder Wade Jim. The heroes are a little more human than earlier pulp heroes, but all for the better.
