Awesome!!!!!!

I just got done reading "Butterfly Pit Crew" by Shawn Michael Bitz. The title intrigued me (it becomes apparent about halfway through). It is set in my hometown of Custer, SD. Although it is a work of fiction, some of the character names are familiar. The places are real. It is the story of two boys (one saves the other from a bully). Their friendship from grade school through high school, college and beyond. The struggles they face with relationships, depression, alcohol and drug addiction. It is a "Good Read"! I laughed and cried. And I saw a piece of myself and my own struggles with parents, friendships, depression. Thank you Shawn!! I can't wait to read more from you!!!

Truly Thought Provoking Story

A heartfelt story of the coming of age of best friends! LIfe's best of times and challenging times are captured eloquently by this incredible author. While it is fictional, there is some truth in this book that everyone has lived at some time in their life. Looking forward for more from this great writer.

Pit Crews and Other Saviors

Shawn Michael Bitz published Butterfly Pit Crew at the end of 2015. I wish the book had been around earlier. Maybe I could have used it to figure out a couple of relationships that are now broken because I didn’t have the courage to experience true friendship.
I love and hate the book. I love it because it speaks so many truths. I hate it because it speaks so many truths. I hate it because I am going to have to read Butterfly Pit Crew again, and maybe again so I can live some of those raw truths fully. Between readings, I can't stop thinking about a chapter or a phrase. This is not just another rite of passage book.
On the surface “Butterfly” is a story about two boys who become friends in the fifth grade in a small rural town. Diresk and Christopher are their own gang, two against the world, teaching each other in their own way. They, and Grover the dog, do all the things boys do as they grow up…pushing limits…experimenting… creating adventures. Eventually they go their separate ways to bigger towns and bigger exploits, but keep a kind of connection. The whole story, on the surface, is told in the first chapter. We know right away that one, as a man, will die young. And the other man when his friend asked for help, “not knowing what else to say, walked away.” And yet he didn’t.
Who should read this book? …Anyone who is willing to be willing to look at themselves full in the face. ..Anyone who is willing to let a book get under their skin. I feel Christopher’s feelings and see Diresk’s insides because they are me. And I hope if I reread “Butterfly” I will learn more and live more.
