Huh

I have thoroughly enjoyed this series, looking forward to each release and this... This may be my least favorite book in said series. It is by no means bad but there were things missing. For one thing the humor is pretty much gone from this book. All of thee little things that maybe made you laugh or chuckle really are not in this book. This kind of makes sense as it is a bit more serious than the other books but it is not just the humor that is gone but the characters that brought it.
If you enjoy Lenui then I am sorry. I don't think his page count reaches double digits. Jhonate? Not much there either. This is the last book in this series and it shows. The books length is taken up more with the plot than with the characters. This unfortunate includes our buddy Ewwie as well. While in previous installments he was an interesting read and a well fleshed out character in this book he felt muted.
One thing that annoyed me and I know other as well was the lack of detail on Justan's magic. Well you may be pleased to know that this is addressed. You may also be upset in the WAY it is addressed...
This book is both the end of the series and it is not. While I look forward to the next book in this world it also makes me nervous because of the multitude of the ways it could go. So yes I enjoyed the read and I would say that if you have gotten this far you should read it and you will probably enjoy it. So why 3 stars? Because while I enjoyed it I also felt it was just not as fun to read as the others in the series.

Mother of the Moonrat
By Georg Martin Erny
It's not easy to think, and dream, up a story. It's much harder to write it down. And it gets harder the longer the story is, because it will become more intricate with every page you write. A true story-teller provides readers with something they can enjoy without feeling the amount of work behind it. Not many succeed. Mr Cooley does. He has created a world to live in, to become involved (and liking every moment of it) and to wonder where the author's imagination will take you next. Introducing new characters is comparatively easy. Keeping their doings consistent and logical over 5 volumes is another thing. How shall I put it? If you read a lot, you will often know after the first two pages of a book whether you are in good hands or not. To me, the Bowl of Souls series achieves that rarest of reader feelings: After the last page of the last book you know that your trust in Mr Cooley's art of story-telling was not only well placed, but exceeded. Hoping to read from him again and again.

Book Five: the Pros and Cons... 4 Stars
By R. Nicholson
"Mother of the Moonrat" is the fifth and final book in 'The Bowl of Souls' series by author Trevor H. Cooley. This Kindle e-book was approximately 470 printed pages and sold for $3.99 at the time of writing this review.
General theme (some spoilers)
This finale details the slow and steady build-up to the final battle between Ewzad Vriil and the group of mages/wizards/bonded group led by Justin. In addition it details the ever growing rift between Ewzad and Mellinda (Mother of the Moonrats), and it also follows the continuing developing relationship(s) between various members within the 'bonded' groups.
Some thoughts on "Mother of the Moonrat"...
The Pros:
1.) an episode that was well written and appeared to be well edited as evidenced by the fact I could find very few, if any, grammatical or syntax errors.
2.) lots of action and encounters, both large and small.
3.) several important characters that could be seriously injured or killed. Adding a degree of realism to the story, given the type and scope of battles endured.
4.) especially appreciated by this reader was the background information given on how Mellinda gradually turned to the Dark Prophet.
5.) map... a good map of the area involved giving a sense of direction, distance and topography.
6.) cover art... a beautiful and stunning image for this final book. Bravo Trevor!
7.) best segment of the book... Chapter 27 detailing some of Lenny's (the dwarf) past. Exquisitely told in heart rending detail.
The Cons: (some minor concerns)
1.) I didn't understand the reason for or the necessity of Justin's maze dream (Ch 21)
2.) I thought a couple of topics were repeated excessively. e.g.
a.) Imp's imploring Willum to name him... a discussion that carried over for several chapters.
b.) similarly in Chapter 32 when the word 'tea' (as the drink) seemed to reoccur more often than what was needed.
c.) I cringed every time Justin called Gwyrtha, 'sweetie'.
3.) the only character I was disappointed in this book (and the series) was Gwyrtha... a character with so much potential throughout the last several books, but she just never seemed to grow or mature much beyond a level equivalent to that of a young child (at least as evidenced by some of her conversations with Justin).
4.) and finally, a concern I had throughout the entire series, was the way in which this otherwise terrific fantasy adventure frequently bordered on a work written for a Young Adult (YA) audience. As evidenced by the near superhero status of some of the main protagonists AND the fact they always had something or someone that just happened to have whatever 'miracle' was needed to overcome the battle d'jour.
Impressions:
Don't get me wrong, despite my lengthy list of concerns above, I really liked this book/series. The entire series had a consistency to it that made each book blend seamlessly with the one before and after it. Not an easy feat for a lengthy five book series.
This book was well written, had lots of great encounters and couple of intriguing villains in the characters of Mellinda and Ewzad Vriil.
Trevor Cooley can write and tell a very good tale, but having said that, I drool at the thought of this book using rugged, seasoned adults figures in place of the young and inexperienced (and often immature) protagonists we find here. Obviously a personal and subjective opinion on my part.
As it is... 4 Stars.
