The Dean Machine-A Must Read!

A great and meaningful adventure
I wanted to read The Dean Machine when I learned that the author was inspired to write it after his experience with a rescue dog named Dean, and that he donates a portion of his royalties to rescued animal shelters. The preface to the story is about Dean, is very moving, and explains perfectly why the author felt compelled to write this book.
Once I started reading the story the plot twists shocked me. The issues the story dealt with, and all of the feelings they brought out of me were also unexpected. The Dean Machine turned out to be a great and meaningful adventure. The story took on many different moods, delving into psychological horror, fantasy, science fiction, and social commentary. I enjoyed the action sequences and the progression of the story. It kept me turning page after page, needing to know what happened next. The ending was perfect, and Dean’s Legacy resonated with me so much.
The Dean Machine is a story of love, kindness, responsibility and the fight for hope. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to read a great adventure, to anyone looking for a dystopian novel with social commentary, to anyone who loves their pet, and to anyone with a heart. After reading The Dean Machine, my heart is a machine.

Entertains you and makes you think.

Its obvious from the description that The Dean Machine is not your typical book. I think I was put off-balance because my mind associates Yellow+Man to equal Man in the Yellow Hat from Curious George, which means subconsciously I was expecting something sort of … sweet and light.
The Dean Machine is not light, but it is, on occasion, sweet.
Halfway through the book, when a character had been rescued, re-kidnapped (by a giant chameleon no less), and found himself down to just one limb but was still determined and had a relatively positive outlook, I found myself sitting back, rubbing my eyes, and going “Huh.” Now, it doesn’t take a genius to figure out why the guy is able to maintain a relatively good outlook ( and I can’t say more without spoiling anything), but just the fact that he’s still all “Oh, move it. I got this.” makes you sit and think for a moment. There was more than one of these sit and think moments.
So, obviously, I spent a lot of time pondering what I’d read before I would move on to the next section. At no point did it seem like the author was doing it deliberately, either. These things just emerged as part of the natural course of the story, so organically you don’t even realize a topic has been introduced to the mildly empty space between your ears until its already taken up residence there.
There are moments of corniness, and some distinctly Carebear-esque technology. This is undeniable. However, there are also moments of extreme suffering and human torture on a staggeringly bad level. The two work to balance each other out surprisingly well. There are homages to old movies that are instantly recognizable, and sometimes mildly terrifying.
This is not a book that will leave you with the warm’n’fuzzies that comes after the successful completion of a good book. It makes you reach out to others, like I did, searching for someone else that has read it because you really, really need to talk about it with someone. To dissect the layers. To poke at things until they make sense, or don’t make sense. Interestingly enough, when I did have a chance to discuss this book with someone else who had read it, we’d both focused on different things. I really hadn’t given more than a few seconds of thought to the very first thing she brought up.
It did very uncomfortable things to my emotions. VERY uncomfortable things. It also made my brain hurt a little bit from all the twists and turns. So take it as you will, but definitely add it to your To-Read List immediately.

Reads a lot like a comic only better!

This was one of those books that has heavy moral meanings. First and foremost are animal rights. That’s a running theme in this book. Secondly, are human rights. This is really brought home with the humans in cages. Moral lessons are great when they are correctly wove into the existing story. Fortunately, they were wove in wonderfully in this story. What I mean by that is that even without the moral lesson’s there is still a story here. Moral lessons are great and all but the story is the reason that people read fiction.
This author spares nothing. His descriptions are gory and realistic. He pulls no punches and relates each scene’s emotions and scenery without candy coating any of the horror. He almost relishes in the horror. He describes the settings with an honesty I found refreshing.
Each character is written wonderfully. I really got a sense of their individuality and their separate experiences. Each character has a vibrant personality and a clear role to play in the story. Even the characters who only have a short role in the story. They will stick with you even when their role is over.
There is a lot of plot twists in this book. It almost felt like too much. I would really of liked to see this worked into two books. I felt like parts of the story were hurried and needed more explanation instead of villain soliloquy .
In a lot of ways this book moved like a Frank Miller movie.Especially the Yellow City and the vibrant villains. This would make one hell of a comic book. It actually read a lot like a comic with the dramatic scenes and the clear villain/hero line.
Yellow City is a creepy place. The world building in this story was fantastic. I got the chills often as I was reading. I also cringed regularly.
I really enjoyed reading this book. It had a great story and a deeper meaning. I was entertained and was persuaded to have a deep think about the world.
