Darn Good Yarn

Mark Rathbun has written an entertaining story. Texas Tropics presents the true-to-life corruption and intrigue of South Texas, doubtless drawn from his days as an investigative reporter in that area. The protagonist, teenager Lupe Garza, is realistic and likeable, pitted against forces way beyond his ability to fight or even comprehend. The mysticism thrown in for understanding the forces at play both within Lupe and in his struggles and allies and enemies enhances and does not distract from the realistic tale. When I finished the book, I wanted more.

More Than a Crime Mystery

This is a "soulful" crime thriller, if that makes sense. Wonderfully written and I couldn't put it down. Descriptive prose that paints beautiful, haunting pictures. You'll love it if you love that kind of writing!

Good First Effort at Fiction

Texas Tropics has an interesting plot and characters although I found "Lupe" the protagonist a bit mature in his thinking and actions for his age. I got the impression that Lupe was styled on how Rathbun sees himself, sure and confident, principled, fearless and David in the face of Goliath. Maybe I'm projecting but 17 year olds usually haven't developed those characteristics, so it read for me as a bit contrived. If Lupe had been mid 20's it would have read more authentic.
I enjoyed the descriptive writing about that part of Texas, and the fishing and metaphysical sub plots.
I found the concluding paragraph of the book a bit sappy.
Overall it was a good first effort at fiction. I'd read another if Rathbun continues.
