I love how interactive this makes the book – it’s not just me reading to Tori and Arthur, they get to join in and have a say without having to do any reading themselves. That said, the chunky, simple text is perfect for Arthur at the moment. He is just learning to read and being able to read a Max book all by himself has made him a very happy boy indeed. Plus he LOVES making me answer all the questions as he reads it aloud! This little book is great for introducing the world of Max The Flying Sausage Dog to younger readers and is a wonderful addition to the collection for those of us who are already fans.

MAX for ALL AGES!

My 8 year-old granddaughter loves MAX the Flying Sausage Dog. It's so fun to hear her read A Tail from London and Tails from the Pound because she reads them with an English accent!
Now there's a MAX book for her little brother too! Tom's Birthday Tail captures the essence of MAX and his quirky little owner Tom. It invites the readers to participate by asking questions on each page. This makes it fun for both the young aspiring readers and for the adults that read MAX to their future readers. (Don't tell the kids, but I especially love the last question that asks about bedtime...)
Arthur Robbins beautiful drawings are scaled up a bit in this version, which makes it more fun for readers because we can see the amazing detail in each one. And an added feature is the lyrics to the MAX theme song. My granddaughter now knows all the words!
BRAVO times three! Can't wait to see what MAX book comes next!

Fun and Whimsical

Why I picked it up: I really enjoyed the chapter books and I was excited to know that it was being adapted into a picture book.
Why I finished it: All of the characters we loved from the chapter books are now going to entertain children of all ages. The picture book is a delightful way for readers not ready for chapter books to enjoy Max and Tom's adventures. The full page illustrations and condensed text make it easy for children to read by themselves or read out loud. Robins' illustrations are fun and whimsical, taking us into the pages and helping us to experience the story on another level. It's a fun story about making new friends and experiencing everyday magic, if only we are willing to see it.
