About the Author
Author Lance Long knows how mechanical things work and can fix almost anything. With a Ph.D. in English, he taught at the college level and the Merchant Marine Academy, but left academia, becoming a licensed general contractor, real estate and mortgage broker, and land developer. Following the real estate collapse in the Savings & Loan crisis of 1989, he wrote the insider disclosure book that grew into a television infomercial and more than 3,000 international seminars and workshops. Lance has written industry studies on alternative fuels, solar energy, aquaculture, electric vehicles, and wastewater bio-mitigation, and as a public speaker, has promoted federal government programs against bioterrorism in Canada and Mexico. After 9/11 he began fitting-out out a large live-aboard diesel trawler. Well versed in survival techniques, having cruised the world, he can navigate anywhere and live off sea and land. He published Boca Chita, Part 1 of the NOEL Trilogy, in 2012, Part II, Calusa Coast in 2014, and Banking on Success, a novel exposing the practices of the seminar business in 2015. He lives aboard, cruising the Florida coast, and is currently working on several novels and a screenplay.

It's good stuff and I highly recommend it

I just read all three of Long's books: Boca Chita, Calusa Coast, First Coast. It's good stuff and I highly recommend it. To be sure, it is not without its flaws. The author's ego can be over the top and is too often overly inserted into his writing. However, sometimes you have to get past the messenger in life to get to the message. If the message is worthwhile then the effort is worth it. In this case it is.

The overall theme is based on a virus causing The End Of The World As We Know It: what the cause is, how to survive it, how to prevail. The story is believable enough and his guide to tips, tricks, traps and solutions is borderline genius. I especially enjoyed the walk through Florida history and geography, critical path solutions and his understandable disdain for all middlemen. There is a lot to appreciate here. I loved the pump jumper. Being a long term trawler veteran, a fellow UF Alum and having lived on the paradise that is Edington Place, I smiled and nodded way too often as Long shared his Tao of a post apocalyptic reality.

If he produces more books in this genre then I plan to buy them.

I am so impressed. Lance is brilliant! I learned things I would not have ever even thought of learning. It's sad though. As I experienced Mark's new world I realize how sad our world is right now and there is really no hope in site yet. Good read.

Delightful book to share with my 7 year old granddaughter..

This is a very good book for children. I was offered a complimentary copy of this book and wanted to share it with my 7 year old grand daughter. She loved it. She could read the entire book by herself (although she likes it when Nana reads a page and then she reads the next page).

"The Koi and the Frog has a number of ideas for good discussion with children e.g. everyone is different and an individual, sometimes we can hide his or her spots or defects, but true friends overlook these imperfections. Giving a fish and a frog personalities with emotions and feelings was unique and their conversation believable to a child. My grand daughter loved the story and we both looked up Koi on Wikipedia to learn more about this colorful fish.

This was a delightful book and I truly enjoyed sharing it with a child - It's fun to see how they react to a story or book.

I Think I Have A New Favorite Book....

ugh! I loved this book! Way more than I thought I would.

When the author contacted me with a pitch for a possible review of his children's book about a koi fish that falls in love with a frog I have to admit, I was pretty interested. Anyone who knows me from my other sites and reviews knows that I have a weakness for children's books. Especially picture books. I was ready to send a quick note letting him know that I would be happy to review it. And then. I saw it. Right as I scrolled down and began to click on the "reply" arrow was an attached .mobi file of this book. To me, this always screams of less than stellar material. The author is afraid that you'll say no so they attach it anyways and guilt you into reading it. (I don't know if that is at all true, but that's just how it feels to me.)

So, with slight hesitation, I went ahead and zipped this title on over to my kindle and hoped for the best. And what do you know I was pleasantly surprised. Not only did I love the story and the lessons that it teaches (looking different doesn't mean you're hideous & someone will find your differences beautiful; and the topic of interracial relationships.) But what surprised me most is that this isn't a picture book but a chapter book! What little illustrations that there are are adorable and done really well.

The Koi and the Frog is a book that I would love to have in my real library collection as it would be a great bedtime story to share with a little one and will be anxiously waiting for a print version.

A lovely layered story with a lesson for all. Recommend it highly.

All right, this concept stretches my imagination -- and keeps me childlike! There have been many frog stories in children's fables, mostly frogs relating with humans and toads. But with a fish? That's just a different class altogether -- cold-blooded, you know. Just like a frog. So they have that in common at least. But what about all the differences? Can Bekko the Koi's love overcome those differences? Can his beloved Matsou the Frog accept this strange love?

Their first meeting turns into an all-day conversation. Wow! The next meeting is even more romantic, with much laughter and sunset watching. For many more days "froggette" and the koi share much togetherness. But frog Matsou has a secret, one she doesn't want to tell anyone. She is afraid that Bekko will stop loving her. That secret makes for a another layer in the story, reminiscent of fairy tales of transformation. Most intriguing. Young readers/listeners will love it!

The story's lesson: It's not what you appear like on the outside that matters to those who love you; it's what's inside.

Quite an adventure!

Untimely Agent is book one in the Angus Farseek series by Brian Clopper. This book was generously provided to me in exchange for an honest review by the author.

Should Angus Farseek have been on the icy road that night? No, but his thoughts were on just driving, putting space between he and home. Never realizing that he might never get to go back there. Angus lost control of the car and just before he should have plunged to his death, he was surrounded by glowing little beings he would learn later were called quick slivers. They somehow transported Angus to another place, surroundings that were completely unfamiliar and confusing. And that is where his adventure began.

Angus learns that he is to become an Untimely Agent or UA, policing the dimensions of time to make sure everything is as it should be. But first he must attend school to learn how to be a UA. Angus is forty two years old, old for an agent. It doesn’t take long, though, for the questions to start to add up. He has more questions than answers. Something just doesn’t seem right. He also soon realizes that he is not the first Farseek to be called into duty as a UA. It seems several family members either have served or are serving.

“What was it with the Farseeks and time travel? Was it something in our blood? Our genes?”

Angus has barely been on campus for two days when there is an attack and he is flung, along with his little rogue quick sliver and another young girl, into a battle against those who seek to upset things. He travels through several different dimensions of time seeing and experiencing things he might rather not have seen. But Angus is determined to fix things. His goal is to somehow eventually get home, right before he ever got into that car, to get his second chance to be a better person, a better man/father/husband.

“It felt too soon. I wasn’t even an agent yet. I was adrift in time with no specific agenda, certainly none sanctioned by the UA.”

This book was quite the adventure. In his flashbacks to the kind of man Angus was before his accident, I wasn’t very impressed. But he did surprise me with his determination once he found himself in the situation he was in. I have to admit, this isn’t my normal genre of reading. But if you are a lover of young adult or middle grade science fiction with lots of adventure and time travel, then you will love this book.

he either accepts his new role like everyone else

Angus Farseek is an ordinary man snatched moments from death and thrown into a bizarre "afterlife" of time-traveling agents. There's no way out; he either accepts his new role like everyone else, or he returns to normality... where his life expectancy is probably about one more second of freefalling off a cliff.

He doesn't want to train to be an Untimely Agent. He's not interested in policing the universe and preventing Absurdists from screwing with time. He just wants to go home to his wife and kids. But if sticking around at the university for a while and going to a few classes will help him escape, then so be it.

As usual, Brian Clopper's imagination is boundless. I'm willing to bet there are no other creatures remotely like the Quick Slivers, fluid creatures that dart about and transport agents from one time and place to another. And they talk with a British accent!

The first half of the book is set in the university, and there are shades of his brilliant Irving Wishbutton for those who love that series. But then things go "pear-shaped" and Angus finds himself in a situation more akin to the Back to the Future movies.

This is the first of a 2-book story. Meeting his relatives is a mind-bender, but in a good way. It's never confusing, but boy does it make you stop and ponder the ins and outs of death and time travel.

Many years ago, during a California drought, I thought about how something about a drought would make a good story. I just didn't know what yet except murders, greed, government corruption, stealing water, and lies have been part of water use ever  since Powell rafted the Colorado River. He predicted way back then that there would be immense problems and overuse of water. The idea of a small private community falling apart occurred with this recent drought. The residents of Agua Hills, the government agency (like the IRS on the warpath) and trouble brewing ever worse, is not so much fiction as a prediction of what will happen as our water resources diminish decade by decade. I highly recommend reading "Cadillac Desert" a fascinating true account of the West's water, and then my book "Drought", and then finish up with a novel "The Water Knife" that is set even further in the future as water shortage devastates Arizona. My experience with water and the legal and illegal dealings are extensive. I can attest to the scary possibility that the stories in my novel will become reality not too far into the future.

About the Author
My life with books started when I was about ten. Of course I read picture books, but by age 10, I read classic novels. No, I devoured adult classic books. I have always loved writing, but life got in the way with marriage, living on cattle ranches, working as a cowgirl, and raising kids. When the kids were little, I was able to sit at the typewriter(Sears manual) and write articles for magazines and write as a correspondent for aviation news. Finally, I focused on books. Like for every author, there were tons of rejections before success. Writing, if you ask any author, is something you do because you love it, not because you have to.

This startlingly true-to-life thriller captivated this reader. I found myself riveted to the pages as the characters navigate their way through personal demons during California's water crisis. Even as "Drought" stands as a wake-up call to more than one crisis haunting our country, the author surprises us with a silver lining!

During a time when everyone is suffering from the California drought, six very different households are suffering from abundance. Greed and justification color their choices as things go from bad to worse to worse. Like a house of cards, their personalities and personal conflicts are layered on a fragile foundation built on secrets.

The author shows real attention to detail and a heart for storytelling. I believed these people were exactly who they said they were. More than just entertainment, there is a lot of truth wrapped in these pages. The Right Way To Be Wrong

At any time, we could be 1-2 years from the world in this book becoming reality. Watch how some good - and some not-so-good - people deal with the very uncomfortable reality of a severe drought in an overpopulated environment.Keep in mind, the Anasazi and other native people died out or had to move on from the southwest because of severe drought. This is geologically likely to happen again regardless of human behavior.
One of the most important questions Drought poses is, what if you have the good fortune to have access to clean water sufficient for a small group of people for quite some time? Do you share? And risk being part of the rest who don't have enough? How far would you go to protect yourself and your family?
Well written and timely story with complex characters struggling with their own answers. Recommended.

Won't be able to put this one down!

Cannot believe this is the author's first book?! Heard about this author first through a friend who IS a firefighter. I watched the arduous developmental process of getting the book published, etc. and ordered it as soon as it was available. Well, I waited to start it until this past Thursday and was that a mistake! My husband came home for the weekend and I could not put the book down! Instead of my walking/running, I got my hubby to walk to dogs and I rode the stationary bike so I could READ!! Wow! I was anticipating a thoughtful, but perhaps not very complex novel as sometimes local authors write enjoyable novels, in large part because of the local landmarks/terrain. This book, however, had complex characters, several twists and turns in the developing plots of local and international terrorism. I found my palms sweating at some points in the book and especially the ending-truly proving all politics is local, and perhaps international as well. Congratulations on an excellent read! Know this one took a long time to write and hope it won't be as long until your next one is published!

A great read for anyone in the Brotherhood of the Fire ...

A great read for anyone in the Brotherhood of the Fire Service with very detailed and accurate descriptions of the modern day fire service, but with enough descriptions for those not in the fire service to be able to follow along and enjoy. The International terror plot gets your attention very early in the book and keeps it to the very last page. A great suspense thriller that takes you from a suburban County in Central Virginia to the Middle East and back. Michael Brigati writes like a seasoned novelist, you would never know that this was his first book. I don't recommend starting this book if you do not have time to finish it. It was difficult to put down.

OKAY, so i finally finished 'fire thieves', and here goes the god honest truth about what i thought about it... first of all, loved the acknowledgments at the end, obviously because i know Kristen but i also love that you mentioned your son. i'm sorry he won't get to read the finished product, but i know that he was with you along the way! second, i am extremely pleasantly surprised. and i'm a book snob, so that's saying something. i literally couldn't put it down (which got me in trouble with the boyfriend while we were moving this weekend, i STILL snuck in reading time!). extremely well written, great flow, excellent use of knowledge of the trade, and the main characters were likable and personable. i love the mention of RVA landmarks; it made it more 'real'. even if you're not from richmond, you'll feel like you know the place. i would say you're the next big upcoming 'local' author, and will eventually surpass patricia cornwall if you continue to choose to write, and i certainly hope you do, as you have a talent for it. i'm disappointed i finished this already; i look forward to reading future publications, and if you ever need a sounding board, i'd be happy to help. great job Michael Brigati, don't stop now!

I love when a work of fiction speaks to me right from the start

This work of fiction rings a little too true in the world we’re living in today. Grace is a wonderful character who makes a huge change, both physical and in her entire character and in who she is as a woman and as a person. By the end of the story you will be cheering for her and wondering about your own life decisions and beliefs. I cheered for Grace, for her journey, for her love, for her life, for the future. I don’t want to give anything away by discussing the plot; I’ll let you be as surprised as I was!

No Frills Fairy Tales

This is collection of well known fairy tales by Grimm's and others, with an introductory on the history and importance of fairy tales for children. Most of them would benefit from illustrations, but if you just want the text, it's fine. Since I plan on handmaking a picture-book for my nieces, it suits my purpose. I do wish the Table of Contents was clickable, however.

NAVIGATION OF "FAIRY TALES EVERY CHILD SHOULD KNOW" KINDLE VERSION

Navigation for this ebook as well as others without active table of contents is simplified by adding your own highlight on the story title or chapter # as it first comes up. I got this version yesterday eventhough my wife has it on her kindle and complained about no table of contents. Last night as I was reading the stories, I highlighted the story title as if first appeared on the screen. After doing this several times, I went to view your notes/highlights, and lo and behold there they were with location # and title, highlight the title and press the 5 way control and you are now at the beginning of the story..... great for re-reading those stories to those grandkids who always want to hear the story again and again and again.
Hope this helps to all who are concerned about "No Active Table of Contents".

Search on "CHAPTER" for a clickable table of contents

Navigation is possible because each story is preceded by the word CHAPTER. If you search on the word CHAPTER, you get what looks very much like a clickable Table of Contents.
