"Moonpie"... Gift, friend and a life lesson!

I really enjoyed reading this book. After reading it myself, I can't wait to read it to my youngest grandson. It was full of warmth, feeling and nice illustrations that paralleled with what the author was expressing. It's a wonderful story which young children will enjoy and parents will love to share with them. Brings the outdoors and nature alive for them, as well. I hope the author will write more books in the future!

This is a precious and descriptive story for children with a surprise ending. This story took me back to simpler times, when I was a child and spent my free time outdoors, playing with and caring for our animals. It teaches that loving something or someone means wanting what is best for them, not just yourself.

Rousing old fashioned pirate adventure

A book that is listed at reading level for 12 years and up, but I thoroughly enjoyed it at 42. This book was awarded the Newberry Medal in 1923. A tale of 17th English century life at sea, it is a rousing and realistic story. The author spent years researching ships logs, sailing accounts, and the life stories of many sailing men to get the proper flavor for his tale. A reviewer complained about the old fashioned language, but I think any book about a period in time does a disservice to young people by avoiding using the authentic accents, terminology, and phrasing of the time. To not do so is to rob the reader of the experience of joining the adventure and falling into the story completely. I think that classic period books that have been abridged into modern-speak to make them easier to read are simply talking down to readers and underestimating their capacity and curiosity to learn.

The plot is an adventure of a young man that has been on ships since he was a toddler, and the horrible and good people he interacts with after a horrible accident on land with a gun makes him a fugitive. He goes to the place he knows best, the sea. He joins a ship that is later seized by pirates. Forced to cooperate or die, he unwillingly joins them in operating the vessel but refuses to participate in their bloodthirsty pursuits. And there is action galore, storms, sea battles between ships, attacks on forts, sword fights, cannon fire, you name it.

The characters are interesting and multi-faceted, not gray cutouts but realistic... A woman in a tavern is kind and generous in the beginning, but as soon as she has nothing to gain for her kindness she turns on him viciously. A pirate leader is cold and cruel but points he "bears no ill will", like a mafia don stating before he kills that it is nothing personal, just business. And many characters are not what they seem at first. Our young hero manages to survive day by day with his own cunning, and turn the dark situation to his own gain to escape, clear his name, and discover surprising things about his own ancestors. The plot switches and turns many times, always with a new surprise around the bend. A very enjoyable story, I highly recommend.

By the way, if you have a child or adult that wants to be able to look up the sailing terminology in many of the sea tales (what's a mizzen for example), or simply wants to read more books like this one, try one of the books in my recommendations list at Amazon that has definitions and pictures for these terms, "Seafaring and Pirate books for young people", or at least try one of the following books:
"A Sea of Words", or "Traditions of the Navy", Manual of Seamanship for Boys and Seamen of the Royal Navy", and "Sailing Ships at a Glance".

Don't get discouraged, it gets pretty good!

"The Dark Frigate" was the 1923 Newbery Award winner. However, as I read the first few chapters I was thinking to myself, "Boy, the Newbery standards weren't very high back then." My chief problem was that it was written in a very archaic and verbose style. I understand that the author was trying to recreate a feeling of 17th century language for his readers, but any child under the age of 12 is going to get frustrated and I doubt many children over age 12 will enjoy wading through its difficult prose either. Also, this is a strange childrens book in that the main character is not a child, but a 19 yr old man with an eye for comely barmaids.
However, if one can get through the rather awkward writing style and the cursory introductions to key characters, "The Dark Frigate" becomes a real page turner when the pirates enter the story and remains one until the last couple of chapters when the author tries to wrap everything up a little too quickly. The chapters dealing with the pirates, though, make for an extremely entertaining and exciting tale. It's those chapters that made me understand why this book won the Newbery.
Although, written for children, "The Dark Frigate" is a rather grown-up book with murders being described in grisly detail, implied torture, hangings, and female characters who aren't exactly chaste maidens. I guess children in the 20's weren't handled with kid gloves when it came to describing the seedier elements of life.

This is a great book for anyone who can tackle it.

Review by Adam Phippen, Brookwood School Grade 7. Phil Marsham is the main character in the book The Dark Frigate by Charles Boardman Hawes, which I thought was very good. Phil Marsham was born in England and was English by right of birth. Phil grew up to be a strong willed young lad, who always had a love for the sea. He had a dream to sail the seas and get away from bland people of the county he lived in. Because he wanted to travel the seas he was very adventurous. He was a brave boy for when faced with scary situations he always approached it head on. For example when he had to get away from the farmers who were chasing him he hid in a place that they would not find him. This story took place in the late 1800's in England and around the cost line Phil sailed on. Since the area was under English law Phil had a hard time being a pirate. At this time there were many soldiers to guard ships against the threat that pirates proved to be. Many were very notorious so there were lots of dangers you had to get past if you were a pirate. There were many ugly ways of executing some one and all were feared by rouges. The idea of this book is that Phil is running from the man from the inn since even though it was an accident he still could not face the man, since he would surely die. So he had one choice. To run! This book starts out that Phil is going to London to charter onto a ship. When he stops at an inn Phil accidentally fires a man's gun off. This proved to be a big problem since he destroyed the inn's interior and nearly killed a man. So Phil started running for his life. This is what started the book. This book was great since it was very dramatic and had great descriptions. The drama comes in as it always comes in with the pirates and with their mutiny and their unsavory descriptions. Where there are rouges there are exciting climactic hangings. The well described dramatic battles put a certain edge to the story. What pirate story can go without a well described sea ship battles? This book is a little hard to follow because it is in third person view with conversations. It also uses lots of odd words and phrases and an accent. Some accents make it hard to understand the people in their conversations. You will get baffled some times when you run into a word like "thee", "thou" , "mizzy mast" or "twill". The phrases will sound a little funny too like "the sea pooped us out". For many drama lovers this is a great book. The battles put an action lover's heart at rest. This book has a part for anyone. It even has a couple romances too. It shows what friends will do for each other. It gets funny when drunks run into serious people. What do you get when you put pirates, soldiers and a whole lot of guns together? You get total mayhem. This is a great book for any one who thinks they can tackle it.

Perhaps the out-and-out funniest of Jane Austen's books. Telling the story of a heroine Austen feared readers would actively dislike, Emma has turned out to be a character whose creation was necessary to the development of the spoiled rich kid genre of literature, TV and movies. Since Emma knows what's best for everybody, she sets about trying to straighten the world out. It doesn't work. Fortunately, before completely screwing up everyone else's life, she gets her head screwed on straight and for the first time sees what it's all about.

A Masterpiece of Wit and Style, A Timeless Work for the Ages

Jane Austen is one of the great masters of the English language, and PRIDE AND PREJUDICE is her great masterpiece, a sharp and witty comedy of manners played out in early 19th Century English society, a world in which men held virtually all the power and women were required to negotiate mine-fields of social status, respectability, wealth, love, and sex in order to marry both to their own liking and to the advantage of their family. And such is particularly the case of the Bennetts, a family of daughters whose father's estate is entailed to a distant relative, for upon Mr. Bennett's death they will lose home, land, income, everything. But are the Bennett daughters up to playing a winning hand in this high-stakes matrimonial game without forfeiting their own personal integrity?

This battle of the sexes is largely seen through the eyes of second daughter Elizabeth, who possesses a razor-sharp wit and rich sense of humor--and who finds herself hindered by her own addlepated mother, her sister Jane's hopeless love for the wealthy Mr. Bingley, and her sister Lydia's penchant for scandal... not to mention the high-born, formidable, and outrageously proud Mr. Darcy, who seems determined to trump her every card. But the game of love proves more surprising than either Elizabeth or Mr. Darcy can imagine, and sometimes a seemingly weak hand proves a winning one when all cards are on the table.

Check the Publisher carefully before you place your order because....

One of the versions listed is published by "General Books LLC." Another reader complained about the tiny and almost unreadable font - you probably bought the version published by General Books LLC - and here's the reason.

General Books LLC is an imprint of VDM Publishing, (google them and take a look at the Wikipedia article on them) and they specialise in publishing books that are free of copyright without doing any editing or quality control. A few quotes from the publishers website will explain more:

"We created your book using OCR software that includes an automated spell check. Our OCR software is 99 percent accurate if the book is in good condition. However, with up to 3,500 characters per page, even one percent can be an annoying number of typos....

After we re-typeset and designed your book, the page numbers change so the old index and table of contents no longer work. Therefore, we usually remove them. Since many of our books only sell a couple of copies, manually creating a new index and table of contents could add more than a hundred dollars to the cover price....

Our OCR software can't distinguish between an illustration and a smudge or library stamp so it ignores everything except type. We would really like to manually scan and add the illustrations. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies....

We created your book using a robot who turned and photographed each page. Our robot is 99 percent accurate. But sometimes two pages stick together. And sometimes a page may even be missing from our copy of the book. We would really like to manually scan each page and buy multiple copies of each original. But many of our books only sell a couple of copies..... "

So what you're getting if you buy the version published by General Books LLC is a scanned in, unedited, low quality (and with an almost unreadable font from the sounds of it) unindexed / No table of contents book at a higher price than many of the good quality imprints available. Basically, VDM Publishing is flooding Amazon with these low quality prints (450,000 of them are listed now) and, unfortunately, many of them have the reviews associated with better quality imprints associated with them. The product description is insufficient for the buyer that's not aware of this publisher.

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying

Just when I thought I had more editions of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE than I should ever own up to, I will freely admit to just one more. After all, what Janeite could resist this tempting package? An unabridged first edition text; Annotations by an Austen scholar; Color illustrations; Over-sized coffee table format; Extensive introduction; And, supplemental material - all pulled together in a beautifully designed interior and stunning cover. *swoon* Where are my aromatic vinegars?

This new annotated edition appeals to modern readers on many levels beyond being a pretty package of a beloved classic. Austen is renowned for her witty dialogue and finely drawn characters, but not for her elaborate physical descriptions or historical context. When PRIDE AND PREJUDICE was originally published in 1813, this brevity was accessible to her contemporary readers who assumed the inferences, but after close to two hundred years words have changed their meaning, insinuations and subtle asides have become fuzzy, and cultural differences from Regency to twenty-first century are worlds apart. Anyone can read PRIDE AND PREJUDICE and follow the narrative, but it is so much more enjoyable if you can read it on an expanded level understanding it in social, cultural and historical context. Editor Patricia Meyer Spacks has not only added extensive notes on plot, characters, events, history, culture and critical analysis from a vast array of Austen and literary scholars, but added her own personal insights and observations from years of reading Austen and her experience as a college professor. From shoe roses to Fordyces Sermons to military floggings to the 19th-century meaning of condescension, readers will be informed and enlightened on every aspect related to the novel, the author and her times. In a nut shell, she has vetted great resources, gathered nuggets of knowledge and placed them at our feet.

As with all of Austen's characters, this new annotated edition of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE has its own charms, "frailties, foibles and follies." Weighing in at over three pounds, and encompassing 464 pages of unabridged text and fine print margin notes, this book easily reigns as the most all-inclusive and well-researched edition of Jane Austen's masterpiece that I have ever encountered. Considering that the elaborate annotation classifies it as a reference work in addition to a full text, it is quite puzzling that it lacks an index. In addition, the illustrations are expertly selected but sadly lost some of their refinement in the printing process, coming across dark and murky in places. However, I was pleased to see a list of further reading and illustration credits listed in the back of the book to encourage readers to "add something more substantial, in the improvement of [their] minds by extensive reading."

Beautiful, sumptuous and satisfying, PRIDE AND PREJUDICE: AN ANNOTATED EDITION is a monumental achievement that should be on the top of your holiday wish list and considered one of few editions available to be esteemed truly accomplished.

I loved this book! I am an animal lover, and as an adult, looking at the cover of the book, I assumed it was mostly for children. Big surprise, I couldn't put it down! I had to keep following the adventures of the characters and turned every page anxiously to read what happens next. If you love dogs, no matter what your age, you will love this book!

I love this book. It was great for me (adult) and my daughter (10 years old). Has a great lesson to be learned. The author's style made the book an easy, enjoyable read. Whoa,... what an insane book! Holy bananas!! Okay, I don't even know where to begin because so much happens and I don't want to give anything away... "The FAll" by author Clifford Reopel is one of the most original and just flat-out interesting thriller fiction novels I've ever read. I liked it for so many different reasons, first the writing was stellar. There are enough descriptions where you can picture everything perfectly, but not so much that it bogs down the pacing. Because of the overarching storylines relating to real events it just felt more "intelligent" than  I expected. It makes you think a bit what's really going on, and worse - what could possibly happen. Recommend for fans of thriller/suspense. This was the first book I've read by this author Clifford Reopel, but I certainly hope it's not the last. He has a gift for writing descriptive and life-like scenes that make us feel like we are really there inside the story, as opposed to it all just being rehashed to us and keeping us away from the action and the character's emotions as so many rookie authors make the mistake of doing. I like that this book didn't feel stale or derivative, but instead like a new niche of political action-thriller that serves well to help diversify a somewhat cookie-cutter genre. I thought that his book was terrific! Once I started reading I didn't want to stop until I'd finished the whole thing. It pulls you in from the beginning, and I enjoyed the author's "voice" and style of writing, and he certainly can create descriptive and dramatic scenes! The dialogue was good and authentic and did a great job of "showing" not "telling" which is imperative for a book such as this. The interweaving plotlines were well-developed and not predictable, and the element of a country at war was a new angle for me, and it shed light on things I've only heard about in the news in passing, like what is happening in Syria or the Middle East, but it becomes scary when you think it could happen here! And it seems like all the pieces are here to make it happen... The characters were all interesting and played their roles well. "The Fall: A Country on Fire" is one of the most interesting, action-packed and well-crafted novels I've read in a long time! I was completely drawn in from the get-go, and absolutely loved Reopel's use of description of the different scenery and locales, and his attention to detail, especially regarding the military weapons and political maneuvering. Can see fans of Tom Clancy and Vince Flynn liking this. The story is strong and so is its message. A great addition to the genre. Good story line

Twin Snipers is a must-read for anyone who wants or needs to know more about the problems facing landowners along the Rio Grande. There's lots of action and much detail about drug runners and how they operate, and the relationship between those that smuggle drugs into the U.S. and the drug cartels that become rich from these illicit activities. It also exposes the dangers that home and ranch owners often face from the illegal drug-related activities that occur in this region of the U.S. The book is full of military terms and tactics, and the handy glossary at the end of the book is helpful in explaining many of the technical terms used in the story. Good story line, enjoyed the main characters.

Great suspense thriller.

This suspense filled novel got my attention. I am the guy that always wants all of the details. At first I thought this had almost more detail than needed. I soon realized how much extensive research had been done and how much I appreciated the detail in this writing. The glossary in the back was an added bonus. The problems of the border and the drugs were well portrayed. The history of the characters and their experiences in Afghanistan really set this story up well. In addition to the focus on the border war on drugs, I was really glad to see that we got a glimpse of the real human trafficking issues that are a huge problem.

I enjoyed reading Twin Snipers. For 30 years from 1975 to 2005,I traveled to and from NW Kansas to South Texas, to visit my parents. I have many happy memories of those trips. The lack of serious border control has caused many serious issues. I will identify two. The deterioration of the quality of life in South Texas. The need for increased security for the ranches. As you drive south on highway 83 the ranch gates just keep getting bigger and stronger. Very sad that our public officials refuse to secure our southern border. Ken's story about the border is on target.

About the Author
Philip K. Dick (1928-1982) was born in Chicago but lived in California for most of his life. He went to college at Berkeley for a year, ran a record store and had his own classical-music show on a local radio station. He published his first short story, 'Beyond Lies the Wub' in 1952. Among his many fine novels are The Man in the High Castle, Time Out of Joint, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? and Flow My Tears, the Policeman Said.

Five stars each for Dick and Library of America

I bought this volume for its inclusion of "A Scanner Darkly", after seeing the movie. I think what made me decide to purchase it was dedication, at the end of the film, to all of Dick's friends who were lost along the way. The movie was effective, if hard to understand, but that dedication was haunting and I knew I had to read the book.

I have yet to read "A Scanner Darkly" because I started off with "Flow My Tears the Policeman Said" and then "Martian Time Slip". Both books were great, combining insightful brilliance and a much larger dose of the hauntedness that drew me to Dick in the first place. In fact, I often had to put down both books, especially "Martian Time Slip" to get rid of the sinking, nauseated feeling that comes so easily while reading Dick. For me Dick is the writer who, page after page, lets me bite off more than I can chew.

Although I understand why Dick is classified as a science fiction writer I think this label does him--and potential readers--a great disservice; I want to encourage anyone reading this review who is leery of science fiction to go ahead and read Dick, especially if they are keen on brilliant, if troubling, insights of the psychological, sociological, metaphysical and outright varieties.

Finally I want to praise the Library of America series. The series is simply first rate, from the physical quality of the materials to the aesthetics of the fonts and book layout and design, inclusion of a permanent tassel bookmark and the editing and notes. Bravo.

PS - in case you didn't know this is actually the second Library of America volume for dick, the first containing four other novels!

PKD: His Tears Would Flow at Making It to the Library of America!

Prolific. Consistently thought-provoking. Scintillatingly brilliant with uncanny frequency. Hilarious. Living an adult life mostly in poverty but surrounded by many caring people. A binge fiction writer, letter-writer, and talker.

This was Philip K. Dick. He was kind enough to correspond several times with a nerdy high-school senior who had written a ten-page analysis of three of his major works.

That was me.

PKD's heart would soar at being included in a series of books featuring Melville, Faulkner, Fitzgerald, Hawthorne, and Thoreau. This latest volume includes FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID, still one of my favorites and the novel that sent me on my own binge of PKD reading.

With an oeuvre of over fifty novels, voluminous short stories, philosophical essays, and a final tome, THE EXEGESIS, which may resemble Prokofiev's Symphony Number 2 in its gargantuan length and ultimate inaccessibility for most fans, Philip K. Dick was a ceaseless writer who found revision a nearly impossible process.

His works are structured by his brilliant mind that thought aloud on paper in the form of stories that questioned the nature of reality but that also revealed a profound love for most of humanity. To read PKD is to become more deeply attuned to what it is to be human--to become an explorer held in suspense by a psychological realist who fabulated fantastic worlds that were strangely familiar.

PKD's best works--five of which are included in this latest volume--are a joy to read. Because he wrote fast and didn't often revise, these are blemished works of art. But all of us are similarly blemished: it's the nature of being human. Brilliance radiates even on pages where archaic slang, incorrect predictions, and other flaws are rife.

One leaves PKD's novels wishing that one could still talk to, correspond with, or hear lecture the author--or simply read brand-new examples of this genius's work. Even with his vast output, one wants more.

One cannot leave the pages of PKD without feeling a strange, perhaps singular, intimacy. These novels incarnate the mind of that brilliant friend who lives nearby and raids your medicine cabinet if you're not looking.

If one is attuned, one leaves the novels of PKD not just loving the words but also loving the man who wrote them, flawed as he may have been.

Rereading FLOW MY TEARS, THE POLICEMAN SAID for the first time in twenty years, I discovered how much I myself had changed. The jokes had a different tone; the philosophical and psychological dimensions had taken on different shadings and colors. But the engaging ideas, the idiosyncratic but compelling characters, and the sheer energy of the novel convinced me yet again that I was in the presence of a mind that never ceased to teach. Dick, a student of so many disciplines, channelled his deepest loves and fears into his books, and we, the lucky readers alive today who continue to peruse his pages, have been given by PKD a gift similar to Mary Anne Dominic's blue vase at the end of FLOW...-- works of enduring art that are loved by many.

I'm grateful that the Internet was unavailable to PKD: it might have ruined his output of novels and stories.

But I wish I could see the joy and pride on his face at having two volumes (so far) dedicated to his best work.

Emerson himself merited only two volumes.

Great book, great selection of stories

That book contains three novels which I've never read before. Definitely not mainstream, but I enjoyed them a lot. Also, it was very interesting to read PKD timeline, which is published at the end of the book.

The strong points of this book for me were the ...

The strong points of this book for me were the action scenes, the punchy style of writing and short, sharp, descriptive passages that depict a shadowy, alien world where all is far from what it seems. Santaph gives us a wicked Queen who is intent on overthrowing the rightful heir to the throne, two brothers who are seemingly on different sides of the conflict, a plucky young heiress who is in grave danger, her friend who uses an invisibility cloak, bands of lizans, monsters who turn out to be less monstrous than we thought, and a whole host of liaisons, allegiances, counter-allegiances and ploys. In fact, the plot is so thick with characters and their various vices and schemes that it is occasionally difficult to follow the path of the true story - which essentially revolves around ensuring the safety of the princess as she travels through a murky land full of dangers. This story is a mix of sci-fi, fantasy and high octane adventure that would have wide appeal for its target, YA audience.

I really enjoyed reading about the Adventure Team

I really enjoyed reading about the Adventure Team. My childhood buddies come to life! I thought it was well done and it held my attention. There were many story line twists that I enjoyed, but do not want to give away any spoilers. I really hope he continues with the books and their unique story lines.

My only pet peeve is from a cultural point of view as he uses the term Ms for one of his characters. In 1972, the terms Miss and Mrs were the cultural norm for women with Ms. being used almost exclusively for divorced women. An unmarried woman in her 40s or 50s was still refereed to as Miss. The feminist movement began the push to use Ms. as a term for all adult women, but did not reach widespread use until the late 90s. All this being said, it is only done twice and in no way shape or form hinders the story.

This book takes you on a sci fi adventure that will make you not want to put it down ! Most definitely a page turner with a great storyline. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves a great piece of written work full of adventure at every turn.
