'All the pieces of art described in these books would be lost to us today if we hadn’t traveled back in time to save them.'
By Grady Harp
Children’s book author Yvonne Jones was born in former East Germany to a German mother and a Vietnamese father. Much of her childhood was spent reading and that is likely where her love for creating a richly diverse spectrum of children’s stories began. Having read GOT GARBAGE gives this reader the advantage of how skillful she is in relating environmental issues in a manner that appeals to children. An now she introduces another arena for ages 7 – 12 that shares a respect for history and mythology and mystery in a manner that is bound to stimulate children’s imaginations and need for discovering more mysteries. Yvonne now lives in the US on the East Coast.

Yvonne’s synopsis gels the tale well: ‘Wen Amser’s family has a secret. A secret that has been kept for centuries. Wen is destined by his family’s ancient oath to forever protect the world’s most precious pieces of art for all of mankind. In his very first fantasy adventure Wen learns that he can influence what will happen tomorrow by going back in time. With the help of an ancient amulet and a magic spell, Wen finds himself and his grandfather’s trusty terrier, Minty, in the streets of Paris in the year 1911. There, Wen must find a way to save Leonardo da Vinci’s most famous painting, the Mona Lisa. But he soon discovers that he is not the only one trying to get his hands on the painting. Will Wen be able to save the piece of art, or will da Vinci’s masterpiece be lost forever?’

Yvonne uses her own illustrations to heighten the impact of her story and the combination of sophisticated writing (always a please when encountering books for young readers – a stimulus to emulate!) and art makes this book about art and savouring it all the more interesting. This is Book 1 of a series of adventures and it is off to a fine start! Grady Harp, February 16

An Educational Story for Juniors
By Scarlett Jensen
The author’s writing style impressed me. It is clear, informative and relevant for juniors to learn about the value of books and their power to steer children into a place and time where fantasy meets reality.
The message: “The present as being between the past and the future. We, today, can influence what will be tomorrow by going back in time.”

The mission: Wen and Minty travel through time to Paris. They need to salvage and protect The Mona Lisa for posterity where wealth lies in the mystery of Gramp’s spell, the responsibility to save the painting and to protect it.

“What a clever guy,” Wen said to himself. “He’s hiding the painting under a false bottom in his trunk.” He had to get in somehow. The building seemed old. Maybe he could just try to open the window from the outside. But he would have to wait until Peruggia left his apartment . That could take forever. How long can someone travel through time for, anyway? Was there a time limit? Wen realized that Gramps hadn’t explained any of this to him. Wen took a deep breath. One step at a time, he thought.”

“The streets were a lot busier than before. Horse shoes were tapping and automobile engines were running. People were out and about, getting ready to begin their hectic day in a big city. Wen and Minty got off the tram in front of the Louvre and walked toward the side of the massive museum building, looking for the door Peruggia had presumably used earlier. He found one that was unlocked and unguarded. This had to be the one. No security safeguarding any of the art pieces.” Their adventure is enjoyable, the dynamic between characters interesting and the message is clear.

Wen turned to his grandfather who was still sitting in the same spot he had been earlier, what seemed like hours ago. “I’m back!” Wen grinned. “Was this for real, Gramps, or was I dreaming?” “As real as I’m sitting here,” his grandfather answered with a gentle smile on his face. “You did well, Wen! You went on your very first time travel today.”

“I guess we just added to the painting’s mysteries,” Gramps said. “What do you mean?” asked Wen. There are all these uncertainties about the Mona Lisa. It’s unsigned. Undated. No confirmed identity. And now they found this mysterious note. Who wrote the note? What is written in that note? Let’s see if we can unlock the next story of this talented author?

A most worthy contribution to children's literature.
By John H. Manhold
The Amulet of Amser, The Case of The Mona Lisa, ISBN: 9780997025408, LHC Publishing, by Yvonne Jones is a children’s story in e-book form.
Wen (Wendall) is told by his grandfather that his name, his father’s (Dwade), and grandfather’s (Faerwald) all mean traveler. He then takes him into his home library and expands oh the importance of this fact. He shows him a book full of descriptions of pieces of art which the boy finds interesting, but ??. Gramps responds: they “…all would have been lost to all of us if we hadn’t traveled back in time to save them.” For the confused boy, gramps explains further “…that some members of the Amser family can travel through time.” Further details are provided and Wen discovers that he is to be the next generation of time travelers to save these valuable pieces of art. Instruction is provided and he is off on his journey accompanied by Minty, his grandfather’s dog who actually has been around for generations and has aided in all the activities through the years.
Discussion: The author has provided a worthy contribution to children’s literature in that; it is written at the level of their understanding; it is nicely verbalized; provides an interesting story; has a nice pace; is well within their attention span; and it provides a lesson in art appreciation and history, subjects largely lacking in instruction being given to children in this day of their constant exposure to an explosive expansion of digital games where most feature monsters, death and destruction. The author’s drawings included within the text add a charming touch.
