  • North and South is a social novel by English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. Along with Wives and Daughters (1865) and Cranford (1853), it is one of her best known novels and has been adapted for television twice, in 1975 and 2004. The latter version renewed interest in the novel and gained it a wider audience. Whereas Gaskell's first novel Mary Barton (1848) views relations between employers and workers from the perspective of the working poor, North and South is more balanced, focusing as well on the thinking of the employers. North and South is set in the fictional industrial town of Milton in the North of England. Forced to leave her home in the tranquil rural south, Margaret Hale settles with her parents in Milton where she witnesses the brutal world wrought by the industrial revolution and employers and workers clashing in the first organised strikes. Sympathetic to the poor whose courage and tenacity she admires and among whom she makes friends, she clashes with John Thornton, a cotton mill manufacturer who belongs to the nouveaux riches and whose contemptuous attitude to workers Margaret despises. Gaskell based Milton on Manchester, where she lived as the wife of a Unitarian minister.

Far better the second time around!
    By CoffeeGurl
It'd been a long time (a decade or so) since I read this Elizabeth Gaskell classic before I watched the BBC adaptation on DVD and loved it. Rereading this novel was the best decision I could have made because I hadn't appreciated it then the way I did now. North and South captures the social divide and how the manufacturing and trading industries were revolutionizing in the 1850s. Margaret Hale, the daughter of a respectable clergyman, and her family move from the south of England to the industrialized northern town of Milton after her father leaves the church because of his conscience. Margaret is appalled with Milton and the vulgar, uncouth ways of tradesmen and merchants, whom she also sees as uncivilized and cruel. However, will she change her mind after she meets and gets to know the dashing Mr. John Thornton? There are many twists throughout the novel.

I was able to appreciate the romance and building of tension between Margaret and Mr. Thornton now, especially after having watched the BBC miniseries and the wonderful Richard Armitage playing Thornton. Right now, to me, there are four memorable classic literary heroes -- Mr. Darcy, Heathcliff, Mr. Rochester and now Mr. Thornton. He is gentler and not as brooding here as he is portrayed in the miniseries, but he is as compelling as I had remembered him. The last few pages are my favorite, especially this line: "While she sought for this paper, her very heart-pulse was arrested by the tone in which Mr. Thornton spoke. His voice was hoarse, and trembling with tender passion, as he said: `Margaret.' " What a romantic line and I wish it had been added to the miniseries. The ending at the train station in the miniseries is wonderful (if a bit anachronistic), but it would have been even better if the aforementioned line had been incorporated into the scene. All in all, this is one of my favorite Victorian classics. Elizabeth Gaskell isn't quite as known or as celebrated as Dickens or the Brontes, people who had been big friends of hers, according to her biography, but she was a gifted writer in her own right and her talent shows in this wonderful gem which I will reread again in the not-so-distant future.

Surprisingly modern tale of class conflict, management theory, and of course, love
    By Amazon Customer
I read the book, like many other reviewers here, after I had watched the brilliant BBC miniseries starring Richard Armitage and Daniela Denby-Ashe. I definitely agree with the comments of many reviewers here that you somehow seem to develop a finer appreciation of the nuances of both after doing that.

A lot of reviewers have covered the ground admirably on the story itself, so I won't go into too much detail on that. In addition to the fine development of plot and characters alike, what I found refreshing about the novel were:

    a. Unlike a few other writers of her time, Elizabeth Gaskell focuses a lot more on the thought processes and feelings of the male characters in the novel. For example, you don't get to hear a lot of what Darcy or Edward Ferrars are thinking in Pride and Prejudice, or Sense and Sensibility, except almost tangentially. In sharp contrast, Mrs. Gaskell gives quite a detailed peep into what John Thornton and Richard Hale are thinking, throughout the novel. As someone who is always interested in the differences in thought processes between the sexes, I found this to be refreshingly different from other novels of the time.

    b. Being in business, it was quite a new experience to read about John Thornton's evolution first as a business owner and then as a "leader", to use that overused term of today. Mrs. Gaskell appears to have a remarkably sophisticated understanding of both management and labor issues. The examples that stand out in my mind - John Thornton's increasing interest in exploring a better construct for labor-management relations beyond the mere "cash nexus" (towards the end of the novel), and his practice of building what we would call a business case today, as he asks Nicholas Higgins to put some figures together for the new cafeteria.

    c. A valuable peep into the mores of the time - for example, despite being fond of Bessy Higgins, Margaret recoils in horror at the thought of visiting her after Bessy's death, a point glossed over in the BBC mini-series, - it gives you a rare insight into things like death and burial customs of the time,.

I must agree with a few other reviewers that the last few chapters seem a little rushed, but from an overall perspective, it is hard to beat this novel for its pure wholesome enjoyment value - more serious and deep than a Pride and Prejudice, and still light enough for people like me who cannot take Thomas Hardy. A definite five stars!

Gaskell's Victorian novel with modern ideas
    By V. Gelczis
I agree with a lot that is written in the previous reviews here. Yes, there is a very slow start to this novel. I wonder whether that's because it was first serialized by Dickens, and Mrs. Gaskell was paid by the word. And, yes, the ending is rather abrupt, especially preceded by the last few slow chapters. Maybe Dickens lost his patience.
In so many ways, though, this novel is a treasure. It's not easy to write a political novel with a strong love story and good characterizations. Gaskell takes on quite a bit and mostly succeeds in her task of describing the changes industrialization brought to England. She balances her sympathy for the workers in the factories with the dilemmas posed to the mill owners by new machinery, competition from abroad, and the threats of potential workers' strikes. She contrasts very effectively the excitement of this new way of life against the nostalgia for the agrarian past. These were new concepts in Victorian England, but they are not so foreign today that we cannot readily understand their significance.
She gives us a sympathetic and spirited heroine in Margaret Hale, who is wise beyond her years. Another colorful character is Nicholas Higgins. I found myself looking forward to his scenes because he provides the humor in an almost-humorless book. (It is funny at the end, though, and I would have liked to have seen more of this tone.)
Mr. Thornton is a character we can readily identify with--someone who triumphs over adversity and seeks to constantly better himself. Someone with high standards, yet none higher than he holds himself to. Margaret is his match in every way.
I did see many plot similarities with "Pride and Prejudice" in the love story. We have characters of different class backgrounds who are initially repelled but who come to appreciate each other and are kept apart by misunderstandings and circumstances. The proposal scenes are strikingly familiar, and the first proposal includes almost the same language (re gentlemanlike behavior) that Elizabeth speaks to Darcy. And we have a Lady Catherine DeBourgh character in Mrs. Thornton, who does her best to drive the lovers apart. But I can't fault Mrs. Gaskell for borrowing plotlines from the master. Although Gaskell is a strong writer, she does not quite have Jane Austen's gift for revealing the humanity in her characters with humor and affection. There is not much "fun" and no banter (until the very last lines of the book) in the North and South love story.
There are many plot contrivances and conveniences, too, which compel us to suspend disbelief. A few too many rapid deaths, a character's coincidental presence at a key scene, another character showing up in an unexpected place, and more. But these limitations serve to drive the story and allow us to focus on the strong moral characters of our central characters and our strong wish for their eventual reconciliation.
In the Penguin edition, it is also rather disturbing to find the plot given away in the footnotes. I read the footnotes religiously to orient myself, but I don't understand why they have to mention so many plot occurrences (especially big things like deaths and proposals) ahead of time. So, if you don't want to know how things go, read the footnotes (and preface) judiciously.
OK, I've written a lot of negatives and yet I give the book 4 stars. Despite its flaws, North and South takes on a lot and mainly succeeds. I love its ambition and its great heart. I love that I learned a lot about English history at that particular time. I love that it rewarded me for getting through those first 150 pages with a rich, compelling story. I love that Mrs. Gaskell held my interest to the end. As Victorian novels go, this is surprisingly modern and a worthwhile read.

In a world of flying cars, space travel, energy weapons, and androids indistinguishable from the humans they work beside, how far will one man go to protect the life he has made for himself? Mina is a science fiction adventure story of love, courage, sacrifice and political intrigue suitable for a mature audience.

A sexy and exciting thrill ride!
    By Devin O'Branagan
In a future when androids are as sophisticated as a human wants them to be, they possess no rights. Mild mannered architect Alex Hanley is drawn into the fight for android rights after he falls in love with Mina—a female with an AI core and a woman’s heart. Together, they struggle to survive long enough to reveal a sinister government conspiracy that affects both humans and androids in far-reaching ways. Mina is a thrilling science fiction tale filled with action, suspense, and romance. I recommend it highly.

    Great Book!
    By Jenny M
    NO SPOILERS IN THIS REVIEW
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It had an interesting take on the definition of humanity two hundred years in the future when AI exists and is incorporated into all aspects of society. The author's clever use of news stories and blog-style discussion boards was an interesting way to let us see how society was perceiving the characters in the book as they became famous.

I usually expect characters to be somewhat one-dimensional when reading new authors. However, they are well developed in Mina. There's also a twists in the main characters' bio/history partway through the book. While I would have liked to have seen some more complex parts of the characters, I felt like that depth of character was there but the speed of the book didn't allow for them to truly shine.

This book was a very easy read, and it moved quickly and easily enough that I was able to read it on the train and bus without becoming too distracted. If it hadn't been for the sexual content, I'd have guessed this was a Young Adult book. I loved that about it because I've been reading some YA books during commutes because they are easy to become enamored with when in highly distracting environments.

This appears to be the first book by the author, and I look forward to reading future pieces by him so that I can watch his style grow and change!

    Solid Mil-SF Thriller
    By Simon Richardson
"Mina" starts with a simple enough premise -- 23rd Century architect buys a robot but feels vaguely uncomfortable with the purchase. It spends the first dozen chapters considering his relationship with his new companion but, after that, it takes an unscheduled right turn and settles down into a more straightforward mil-SF thriller.
For me it was the second part that was more convincing and the way the tale unfolded after this reminded me of early Heinlein. It's not the normal thing I would read (or write) but the story rocks along at a good pace and, for anyone who might enjoy this sort of thing, I'd certainly recommend it.

    I thoroughly enjoyed this book
    By Amazon Customer
I am not typically a sci-fi/fantasy book reader. I do feel it is more fantasy than sci-fi, but, never the less, I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The book appealed to me, in the beginning, because Alex, a young journalist, is from Cape Girardeau, Missouri, which I am familiar with. I soon became enthralled with "all" the characters. They were fun, exciting and full of life. I felt like I was right there with them in their quest to find the truth of what they always thought were "myths". I can even picture what Alex, Ghaoithe, Fleet..... and the rest of the crew look like This was a very easy read and I did not want it to end. I want to be on that ship, the Cloudkicker, for the next installment of this series....

He put the phone into his pocket and was on his way to the store, when he felt someone touching his elbow. John turned around and saw a scruffy looking man, wearing a very old-looking jacket and some dirty jeans. His shoes looked as if they were at least a decade old and there was a specific scent around the man; it wasn't alcohol, nor dirt, it rather smelled like mold. Oh, Jesus, John thought and looked at the man's face.
"What is it?" John asked, irritated.
"I'm sorry, I was wondering if you could spare some change?" the man said in such a quiet voice that John barely heard him.
"No, I don't. I have no spare change, no spare needles, nor spare cans of beer. Sorry," he replied, turned around and went inside the store.
"I just need food, I don't drink," John heard the man outside the store say, but decided not to waste his time anymore talking to some junkie who had clearly fucked up his life. It wasn't John's problem.
Half an hour later, as he was walking out of the store, John checked his cart and realized he had forgotten to buy pasta and tomato sauce, which was too bad as he was planning to make lasagna the next day. He stopped before the exit, looked at the almost empty shop, checked his watch, sighed and thought he really didn't feel like going back amongst the aisles, when he spotted a cart with food left inside of it by the customers. The cart had stickers of a certain charity organization on it and the information written on a piece of paper hanging from its front stated that the food was being gathered for the poorest people living in the neighborhood. John looked over his shoulder, made sure nobody was around, walked towards the charity cart, looked inside of it and spotted both pasta and the needed tomato sauce. He hesitated for a second, but finally reached out and took the donated products he needed.
About two months later, he woke to find a belt lying on his bed for the very first time.

    Review
"The Belt is an exciting book that I couldn't put down from start to finish. John Smith, our main character, is a total dick. (I know, right?) He is a womanizer, a charmer, a prick of a father, and a worthless husband. He does have some redeeming qualities, but they are short-lived as hepretty much shows his true colors throughout the story.

He loves women--or rather, fucks them. He cheats endlessly, and he has no realgood qualities, until the very end, and I won't give that away...

Needless to say, I liked the book, but I felt John was a real asshole. Theauthor did a great job making me hate him with everything I had. :)

So, if you like a book where the main character gets his just rewards, then this is the book for you. Just make sure you don't move the belt...theguy is really paranoid about them, after all:)" Danielle Zwissler, Goodreads

"Wow. I read this book a few months ago and it completely messed with myhead. You get to be inside the mind of main character, John Smith, andit's not a very pretty mind. He is someone you will completely hate. The book is very well written and has a great flow with very well writtencharacters. It's not my usual type books I read, but I wasn'tdisappointed.

It starts of with getting to know the multiplelives he's living. He is a shitty person and a complete asshole whoisn't satisfied living his married life with his family, so he's created three other ones with other women. He is a pathological liar and anextremely selfish man who is also the master of making women feel sorryfor him and fall on his feet.

Once his life starts turning upside down, he begins to lose his mind. But at this point you already hatehim so much that it doesn't make you feel the least bit sorry for whathe's going through. And then you start to wonder, what the deal withthat belt? Well if you want to find out to should read Agatha Rae's book because I will tell you, it's a complete mind fuck. In a good way." A great and crazy ride
    By Ashley Tomlinson
Wow John Smith is a mega douche and that is the nicest way to put. He's a horrible character, not horribly written just someone you want to punch in the throat and watch wither on the ground in pain for a while. The author did an excellent job creating a character that is fun to hate.

John is a sorry excuse for a man. He is a s***ty husband, father, friend and a cheater to top it all off. He lives his life to fulfill his own desires not caring about the people that he pulls into it. He starts to have horrifying nightmares that make him not want to go to sleep. He finds his life is spiraling out of control and he is losing everything including his mind.

I really enjoyed this book to the point that I didn't want to stop reading it until I was finished. It made me question a lot while trying to figure out what the heck was going on. The dream he was having would terrify most anyone, especially someone like John. I won't go into detail about the dream because that would give too much away but just know that it's pretty crazy.

It was crazy that as a grown man he couldn't figure out how to live on his own though. I did wonder that a few times and completely agreed with what his friend Paul told him. I applauded Mickey and Cindy in the end and honestly didn't care about Johns sudden revelation at the end. He messed up too much to win me over and thought he got what was coming to him.

John Smith is a man who doesn't have much respect for others feelings then his own. He is a douche to say the least. He's a character one pretty fast learn to hate and wish him hell for all he does to the ones around him. The author Agatha Rae has done an excellent job writing and creating the character that one enjoys to hate. Well done Agatha for yet another great book!

    Alien hijinks
    By Ivy
I really enjoyed Artificial Gods. It's about a college girl who comes home for the summer and sees a UFO in the sky. Although she's not the kind of person who believes in alien life, the next day she's visited by some men who behave very strangely. . . and it just gets weirder from there. Her sister Chrys and a boy that Chrys either is or is not dating get involved in the otherworldly hijinks as well. Are there really aliens? Or are there even darker forces at work that are disguising themeselves as alien life? The story gets a little bit grisly at times, but always stays interesting and unpredictable. I really liked the main character Jasmine, especially her musings about the underpinnings of her relationship with her sister and with boys. Also, the novel has a consistent light humorous touch. The story is set in the Hudson Valley where I live (to get specific, it's set in Pine Bush), and it's always fun to read a story set somewhere you know.

I previously read We Shadows, the first book in the series, which is about all different characters (although Shane and her friends make a cameo towards the end of Artificial Gods.) I don't think having read that or not having read the second in the series made a big difference to my reading enjoyment. To me these books seem more like companion novels than a series, strictly speaking, and I'm guessing you could probably read them in any order. I suppose I don't really know until I read them all, but that has been my experience so far. I like it when a series is written out of order, a la Lois McMaster Bujold.

What didn't I like about this novel? The formatting! This is one of the first ebooks I ever read so I don't know if this is common or if it's something I could have fixed somehow, but the line breaks were all screwed up so that they ended in the middle of

the line and had weird spaces (like this.)
It drove me bananas! But eventually I got used to it.

    Action packed Suspense
By All Things Book - Review
This book touches on just about everything from The Mothman Prophesies to ghosts to bigfoot and yes even Aleens and UFO's

I was entranced by this book, it contains a lot of action and adventure. Mystery and suspense. Thomm Quackenbush was abe to encorporate a sense of suspenseful adventure and mystery while detailing a small town being a focal point for Aleens to enter our world through the use of two sisters. During a Alien festival, their attempt at becoming corporeal is foiled.

"They were once fairies and elves. Now they are creatures from beyond the stars because you no longer believe in anything but humans."

    Awesome. thatisall
    By Samuel Alexander
Okay.  There is only one thing I can say about this novel.  That I absolutely loved it.  Couldn’t put it down.  Even the annoying parts of the book were curtailed by good reasons for having them in there.  This book kept me in that I can’t wait to get to the end, on the edge of my seat, tapping the screen for next page on my kindle, anxiety mode.  Which of course is what any good book should do.  So lets get to the break down.

The flow was perfect.  There was a clear goal.  The typical reluctant hero who actually went forward regardless of their trepidation.  That was nice.  I didn’t have to sit through an entire book waiting for them to wake up and get moving, they moved along while trying to convince themselves everything was just not happening.  That kept the book moving instead of pages and pages of denial till the lead finally decides to do what must be done.

So the plot points came just when they needed to come.  The clues to the mystery always left me thinking, ahhhhh I want more.  Which is great.  Just enough to always keep me on the edge without feeling I wasn’t left hanging too long before more arrived.  Unlike the first two installments where I quite literally felt I got nothing till the end.  This book is riddle with all those enticing little tidbits of almost full information and crafty little turns that make any readers brain tingle.  All in all the plot went as it should, the events and situations where timed right.  This was a brilliant piece of fiction.

Before the character break down the biggest noticeable thing is firstly all the main characters have a certain depth that has that what you think they are on the surface only to find out, hey there is more to this person after all.  There was only one annoying back-story in this book.  The mothers.  Completely disinterested.  This book is about, Jasmine, her younger sister Chrys, and Dylan.  And they were very well developed without any need for lengthy back-story.  And finally the absence of all that virgin nonsense.  Yaaay!

So Jasmine.  I was almost annoyed with our lead.  But there was something about her annoying tenacity to protect her sister that made me keep reading.  I was secretly hoping she wasn’t this girl afraid of intimacy and the more no virgin talk came up about any of the male or female leads the more convinced I became that maybe she isn’t like his other characters.  So I didn’t really like her, yes she was annoying, but I understood her.  She was very well written, and she even not believing in aliens still went forward and researched while simultaneously trying to debunk all the truths she was finding.  That was her only floor.  The assumption that if you believed in Aliens that you were indeed crazy, when most people are normal people who just happen to believe.  She had trouble making the distinction considering she had also seen and was always on the border of believing she had indeed gone nuts.

The best thing about her was of course the reasoning behind why she fails at relationships and seems to only have any emotion for her sister.  It was logical.  A good plot device and it came early enough in the book that she had time to deny it go through the motions and ultimately accept it in the final pages.  She did the one thing I’ve been harping on about the other books, grew.  She started of in this very over protective blah state.  But as she got faced with things beyond her and was forced to question almost everything she believed, she came out on top, better than before, and decidedly working towards becoming a whole person.

Chrys.  She seems to be flowing on the wind with this whole alien thing.  Just your typical teenager without any of the intimacy issues of the first.  And she’s just likeable, she likes boys, but is only halfway boy crazy and isn’t an idiot.  And she sort of grounds the book.  She’s the one out of the three that consciously decides that even with all that’s going on around her she is going to be normal.  Not ignore it, but just take it in stride.  And she can do that and still be scared and still have nervous breakdowns and still argue with her sister here and there.  She didn’t sacrifice the quest for information for the sake of being a normal girl.  She very seamlessly flirted through both.  This seemed to rub of a bit on her sister.  Not much but a teeny bit.  I read the book the whole time hoping that she would crack Jasmine and somehow get her to wholly let loose and stop stressing so much.

Also in the depth area.  It turns out that she too can be protective.  In the face of danger she made a choice to do something and did it in such a way the characters and the reader where fooled.  And she grows to appreciate her sister more and their bond grows into what real sisterhood should be.  The good kind.  She seemed to grow a bit stronger and had the more visible emotions of the main characters.

Dylan.  Calm cool collective, and handsome.  My only issue with this is that Jasmine only found him attractive after a shave and business like attire for a funeral.  Just a personal peeve that rugged manly man can’t be attractive.  I always thought he was handsome, as did Chrys.  But hey that’s just me.  Moving on he was the catalyst that got the book going.  The bearer of information and somehow managed to make me smile.  Lots.  He had that odd sense of funny without ever having to crack a joke.  Just perfect for any good reader to gobble up as a love interest.  He is the believer that holds together Chrys’s just good old fashioned interest and Jasmine’s complete disbelief and he gently pushes them in all the right directions.  They would be lost without him and furthermore he just makes it all seem like it’s normal even though being hunted by aliens is clearly not normal.

He also grows a need to protect them both and ends up easily falling into a role of protector when at first he’s just a simple heartthrob with mountains of alien information.  And it’s that mountain of factoids that saves the day in the end.  And just like the other two the more he swims through the pages the more you understand what drives him and start to feel and connect with him.

And then there’s a character who was finally written well.  Gideon.  Yes.  He was helpful yet aloof.  When he was vague it wasn’t a deterrence to the three leads.  They all understood very well it seems that what was important was the information that he gave them, and not who or what he was, and why he couldn’t directly help.  Unlike the Shane in the first book who kept demanding things she didn’t need.  Once that was established, he became more helpful.  More dark, more mysterious, and just more well rounded as you wanted to see why he was even in this book, and when he was missing you questioned how he was manipulating things and why.  There was a need to know why he was being so helpful yet kind of menacing about it.  It was very snape-esque.  I’m here to help you but I am a bit of a bad guy so I’m enjoying your distress just a bit.  It was fun to read his dialogue when the characters where smart enough and receptive enough to work through his comments.  And when they couldn’t understand his theories, which did annoy me a bit too, they just ignored the philosophy and focused on the points he was straying away from with all the info.  Shane did this mostly as he came to her the most.  And the even cooler part is when you find out how he’s helping, when he’s not even there.  Suffice it to say, I’ve had a love hate relationship with this guy for two books, and finally he’s written well and half of that is because of how the characters that interact with him are written.

This book is a stray away from the first two in that it is more about the aliens than daemons.  Which makes it read like it shouldn’t even be part of this series.  The only Character from the previous two who plays a role is the Gideon.  And when I was completely annoyed to see Shane, and Roselyn, and Dryden show up at the end, the actual ending made it make sense.  They barely got three pages.  And thankfully were not a part of the ending information dumps this author loves so much.  Which almost ruined the book.  To be fair.  I didn’t need the reveal.  It was unnecessary.  And almost bumped this book down to an eight.  It was confusing, not handled very well but ultimately once it was done and the tension rearised I quickly forgot about it.  In truth without it, the book would’ve read the same without the flashback.  I didn’t even know there were loose ends that needed tying until they were tied.  But I expected that so easily ignored it.  It’s just the style of this particular author to bombard you with stuff at the end which sadly, was needed in the first two.  But since this book was crafted so well quite literally none of the explanation was needed.  The aliens did what they did, this person, (nice but somewhat predictable betrayal.  Still very good plot wise) betrayed you.  And now it’s die or live.  What shall it be?  I will admit that his explanation for what he did was needed.  Jasmine's big reveal, I kinda skimmed through it for the action at hand, and can sum it up in about four sentences.  It wasn’t that hard to figure out her reveal even skimming through those particular paragraphs.  IN my opinion the other should’ve gave the betrayer a few sentences at the beginning to explain it.  Then when Jasmine looked shocked and defiant her memory would flood back to her and she would realise it was the truth.  Quick.  Efficient, cue in evil villain maniacal laugh and move on.

So I enjoyed this.  And I knew I was going to enjoy it within the first three chapters.  That’s usually all I give a book before I decide if I’m going to be head over heals for it.  I couldn’t put it down, and it was executed well.  And only the little annoyances, Jasmine’s end reveal, the mother’s backstory, the borderline intimacy issues that the former lead characters had (thankfully there was a legitimate reason this time), I loved.  It so it gets a ten out of me.  In fact I loved it so much I almost want to tell everyone not to read my reviews for book one and two.

And there is nothing like an ending that completely and totally explains an entire book previous.  Especially a book that I did not enjoy.  It at the very least made me smile and nod a bit at the brilliance of it all if not make me like that particular book, still don’t.  But this ending, and this book clearly shows what I thought all along.  I said twice this author’s writing style I like.  I said twice his books always felt like they were going somewhere and plateaued at going somewhere.  This book was going somewhere, took you along for the ride, reached it’s destination and then left you think, oh that’s what book two was all about.  And that’s just freakn mind-blowingly awesome.

Faith renewed I’ll read another one of his books.  Artificial Gods has saved the day.
