The characters are strongly written, and, like all conspiracy books, the plot takes some surprising twists and turns. Crane has a crisp, punchy writing style that is well-suited to this type of fast-paced material.

Hi. Thanks for reading.

Some of the best writing advice I've received is to use what I've got. So, I drew on my personal experience in the Army and on Wall Street to write "Treachery".

My hours spent tramping around in the local woods, and buzzing around the city by cab and subway gave me lots of first hand experience to use in making the story real.

But, there is a limit to this. The fictional people are composites made up of bits and pieces of real people I've known, of course.

And you just know that all the scenes are fantasy. Right?

A wise woman too...

I expected intrigue, explosions and betrayals - and they are all there. This dramatic story confirms what we now know: politicians will do just about anything to get or stay elected. Innocent people may be compromised or even killed - for a great headline or photo op.

A surprise was the wise and resourceful wife of the central character, who works silently with a very few clues to try to protect her husband from the dangers mounting around him. Far from a secondary character, she matches her husband's skills in planning and evading discovery, while others foolishly underestimate her.

Vivid characters and complex relationships make this book far more than a formulaic thriller. I'm so glad the author left the door open for a sequel. I'll be waiting to see what happens next.

Great read

This is a great read. Larry Crane spins an action packed tale that will keep you reading long after you should have gone to bed. His knowledge of the military, the Bear Mountain area and the stock brokerage business make this story, though far fetched, highly believable. He does a great job of building his characters and I hope we will see them again in future stories. Well, at least those that survived this adventure. I highly recommend this book

In this action-packed, and graphic novel, Larry Crane paints an all too familiar picture of humanity. Set against a backdrop of US presidential politics, he, all too clearly, indicts us all. First Timothy says that the "love of money is the root of all evil", and John Ruskin once wrote that "pride is at the bottom of all great mistakes." Larry gives us a glimpse into just how great such loss of virtue can be.The action in the scenes is vivid, and raises the heartbeat -- but, the motivations cause the reader to pause when seeing how a virtuous man can fall, and then to ask: "I wonder, what is my own price? At what level could I be forced to abandon my values?" Be prepared for some self-examination.

An Improvement on the original, and that is saying a lot!

Doc Savage Flight into Fear expanded edition by Kenneth Robeson

The Second World War is over, and the Russians have quickly gone from our allies to our bitter enemies. Doc Savage has been undercover for some time in the character of Banner, an extremely tough mercenary. He has built up a reputation for Banner as a ruthless man who might do anything. He has spent time in the Scandinavian countries and inside the USSR itself, one time escaping from one of Stalin’s infamous work camps.

Now, the USSR has placed a death sentence on Doc Savage and has a operative on his trail, a woman named Anna Gryahznyi. This woman is called “The Red Widow” and tales of her cruelty are so vile that even Doc cannot repress a shiver of fear. She is relentless, deadly, and a master of disguise.

Doc is certain he has already met her when a female agent is found sliced to bits. Doc has met a woman that seemed to be Eva Baker, the brutally murdered agent. He knows now that had she really known he was Doc Savage and not Banner the mercenary he would be dead. It shakes him.

Now he is on assignment to help two agents, Peter Breckinridge and Arthur Drayden smuggle Project Moonwinx into Russia. The way is filled with more danger than the three men know. People who claim to be helping are really hindering, their boat captain, a man named Paul Poltav who has had dealings with Banner before, goes past their destination. An extra passenger has came aboard during a routine stop that makes Banner and company fear that Anna Gryahznyi is now aboard.

Escaping the boat along with Nina Kirkguard, the co-captain, the group heads into the Urals with Poltav on their tail.

They face the ice and snow of the Russian tundra, the tender mercies of the native Nenet people, the guns of Poltav and company, and when things simply cannot get any worse—they do. Brushes with Soviet Work Camps nearby, an ambush in the snow, agents of Moscow hidden among the Nenet—what else could possibly go wrong?

The pace is fast and furious. This new addition addresses questions left by the first book and ups the menace rate exponentially.

There is a traitor among them…and somebody is going to die because of that betrayal. Will this stop Project Moonwinx before they can even get the antenna together and in operation?

I gave this book five plus out of five stars.

This was NOT Doc Savage in the least

This is easily the worst Doc Savage novel I have ever come across -- and I don't say that lightly. The lead character is Doc in name only. The story starts out with him fearfully hiding from a female Soviet assassin that he had never even come across. His five aides and his cousin Pat are only mentioned in passing, and the manner in which this is done suggests that they were simply shoehorned into the story.

This very clearly was not a Doc Savage story to begin with. Rather, it was a story about a man named Banner that was later rewritten and unartfully forced into the Doc Savage mold. Don't waste your time with this one.

Savage. Doc Savage., or the Spy Who Went Into The Cold

Totally unlike any other Doc Savage adventure I've ever read. This moved from the realm of pulp adventure straight to espionage thriller. Gone were Doc's assistants (the first story in which none of them appeared), replaced by a gaggle of spies and assassins on both sides. This book had the feel of one written by a Robert Ludlum or Alistair McLean, and totally departs from the typical Doc adventure. Nonetheless, it is an interesting and thrilling read, and delves into the psyche of Doc Savage more than any other story thus far. Doc holds genuine fear about another person, and this clouds his judgment, causing poor decisions, and often loss of control of the situation he is in. Where his assistants and incidental characters normally provide the narrative for a largely silent Doc, while he provides the denouement, we are privy here to Doc's thoughts, concerns and fears- his motivations that largely move the story along (he is constantly present in the story) while the denouement is handed in by another character. We see that Doc is still a vital character with great cachet and in great demand by his government, and that his scientific interest can overcome his fears- and his good judgment. Perhaps most interesting is the fact that he assumes another identity for almost the entirety of the story, indicating an elaborate backstory, including some of the incidental characters, that paints a larger picture than is contained in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and seeing this hidden side of the Man of Bronze, coping with a new world, thick in the middle of the Cold War and atomic weapons. However, I would not recommend a first-time Doc Savage reader to start with this novel, because it is so atypical of the pulp/noir/sci-fi/adventure format of the other Doc Savage novels. Had I read this one first, I might have totally missed its significance and not read another. And that would have been one of the great disappointments in my life.

Dick and his family moved to the Bay Area of San Francisco when he was young, and later on to Washington Dc following his parents divorce. Dick attended Elementary school and then a Quaker school before the family moved back to California. It was around this time that Dick began to take an active interest in the science fiction genre, reading his first magazine 'Stirring Science Stories', at age twelve. Dick married five times between 1959 and 1973, and had three children. He sold his first story in 1951 and from that point on he wrote full-time, selling his first novel in 1955. In addition to 44 published novels, Dick wrote an estimated 121 short stories, most of which appeared in science fiction magazines during his lifetime. The Count of Monte Cristo (French: Le Comte de Monte-Cristo) is an adventure novel by French author Alexandre Dumas (père) completed in 1844. It is one of the author's most popular works, along with The Three Musketeers. Like many of his novels, it is expanded from plot outlines suggested by his collaborating ghostwriter Auguste Maquet. The story takes place in France, Italy, and islands in the Mediterranean during the historical events of 1815–1839: the era of the Bourbon Restoration through the reign of Louis-Philippe of France. It begins just before the Hundred Days period (when Napoleon returned to power after his exile). The historical setting is a fundamental element of the book, an adventure story primarily concerned with themes of hope, justice, vengeance, mercy, and forgiveness. It centres around a man who is wrongfully imprisoned, escapes from jail, acquires a fortune, and sets about getting revenge on those responsible for his imprisonment. However, his plans have devastating consequences for the innocent as well as the guilty. In addition, it is a story that involves romance, loyalty, betrayal, and selfishness, shown throughout the story as characters slowly reveal their true inner nature. The book is considered a literary classic today. ROBIN BUSS's TRANSLATION from PENGUIN CLASSICS

This review is for those who've already decided they want to read The Count of Monte Cristo (you won't regret it!), and don't know which version to get.

Short answer: see review title, duh!

The Count of Monte Cristo is my favorite book, and I've read several translations, both abridged and unabridged.

TRANSLATION
The Buss translation is the most modern, and reads most fluidly. A quick example comparing this translation with the one found on Project Gutenberg:

PG - His wife visited for him, and this was the received thing in the world, where the weighty and multifarious occupations of the magistrate were accepted as an excuse for what was really only calculated pride...

BUSS - His wife visited on his behalf; this was accepted in society, where it was attributed to the amount and gravity of the lawyer's business -- when it was, in reality, deliberate arrogance...

Buss's work reads like the book was written in English. The two or so times that the work is nearly untranslatable, Buss makes a footnote about it (eg, an insinuated insult using the formal "vous" instead of the familiar "tu"). Other translations just skip the subtlety. The most common translation out there (uncredited in my version) reads like a swamp. Trust me, get Buss.

ABRIDGED V UNABRIDGED
Abridged versions of this book rarely say "abridged." You can tell by the size: abridged is 500-700 pages, unabridged is 1200-1400 pages. Go for the unabridged.

The abridged version is VERY confusing! Pruning 1200 pages down to 600 leaves a lot of plot on the cutting room floor. Suddenly, arriving at dinner are 4 new characters; it's very tiring to try to keep up with the hole-ridden story of the abridged versions. And you know where the holes are? Publishers "clean up" the book by omitting the affairs, illegitimate children, homosexuality, hashish trips, etc.

As an added bonus in the Penguin Classics edition, there's a wonderful appendix bursting with footnotes to explain all the 19th century references, and a quick guide to the rise and fall of Napoleon (crucial to the politics in the story).

A gripping tale of love and revenge

Warning: Do NOT pick this book up and start it if you have something that you need to do in the next day or three. You won't be able to put the book down, or if you do, you'll move zombielike through your everyday tasks while your mind stays with the adventures of Edmund Dantes.
The Count of Monte Cristo is a delicious book, full of intrigue, great fight scenes, love, passion, and witty social satire. Dumas has a wonderful grasp of human nature and a talent for rendering all the follies of man in delightful, snappy prose. I immediately recognized people that I know (yes, even myself) in his vivid characters, which made the book all the more engaging to me.
Some people might be put off by the size of the book -- it's a pretty hefty volume -- an tempted to buy the abridged version. Don't! I've heard from people who've read both versions that the abridged version is a pathetic, washed out shadow of the full novel. At any rate, as thick and impossibly long as The Count of Monte Cristo may seem when you open it for the first time, you'll feel as though it's far too short by the time you get to the last page.

Absolutely the best book ever

This book is an example of perfect fiction writing. Its length is 5 times the average book and it still was not long enough! The story, the characters, the settings and the emotions enthralled me for days. I could not put it down. I was living the book as it took me to France, the mediterranean, Italy and every home, cave and mode of transportation detailed in exemplary fashion by Dumas. Without giving away the intrigue... This book is the story of a wronged young sailor and follows his life as he is imprisoned due to the actions of 3 jealous men. He lives in prison for an extended period of time, meeting a man who gives him hope and a life beyond his dreams. He escapes the horrid dungeon and seeks revenge on the 3 men who took away everything he ever hoped for. This book is amazing, it will not disappoint anyone. I cannot believe I did not read it before. Thank you Kindle for allowing me the pleasure of reading this book for free, however, it is worth paying for and sharing with anyone who loves to read.

North and South is a social novel by English writer Elizabeth Gaskell. Along with Wives and Daughters (1865) and Cranford (1853), it is one of her best known novels and has been adapted for television twice, in 1975 and 2004. The latter version renewed interest in the novel and gained it a wider audience. Whereas Gaskell's first novel Mary Barton (1848) views relations between employers and workers from the perspective of the working poor, North and South is more balanced, focusing as well on the thinking of the employers. North and South is set in the fictional industrial town of Milton in the North of England. Forced to leave her home in the tranquil rural south, Margaret Hale settles with her parents in Milton where she witnesses the brutal world wrought by the industrial revolution and employers and workers clashing in the first organised strikes. Sympathetic to the poor whose courage and tenacity she admires and among whom she makes friends, she clashes with John Thornton, a cotton mill manufacturer who belongs to the nouveaux riches and whose contemptuous attitude to workers Margaret despises. Gaskell based Milton on Manchester, where she lived as the wife of a Unitarian minister.

It's an ok story, your typical Victorian drama/romance. I wish I would have gotten the abridged version however, the author tends to ramble about uninteresting points. The conversations with the "lower class" characters are also fairly painful to read, I think she over did it.

Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde is the original title of a novella written by the Scottish author Robert Louis Stevenson that was first published in 1886. The work is commonly known today as The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, or simply Jekyll & Hyde. It is about a London lawyer named Gabriel John Utterson who investigates strange occurrences between his old friend, Dr. Henry Jekyll, and the evil Edward Hyde. The work is commonly associated with the rare mental condition often called "split personality", referred to in psychiatry as dissociative identity disorder, where within the same body there exists more than one distinct personality. In this case, there are two personalities within Dr. Jekyll, one apparently good and the other evil. The novella's impact is such that it has become a part of the language, with the very phrase "Jekyll and Hyde" coming to mean a person who is vastly different in moral character from one situation to the next. There have been many audio recordings of the novella, with some of the more famous readers including Tom Baker, Roger Rees, Christopher Lee, Anthony Quayle, Martin Jarvis, Tim Pigott-Smith, John Hurt, Ian Holm and Gene Lockhart.

Do You Know the True Story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde??

I have seen many movie versions of this classic. So, I made the assumption that I knew the true story. Then I read this book. Was my assumption ever wrong!!!

This particular book (published by Signet Classics in Sept. 2003) of less than 150 pages has five parts:

(1) Opening Pages. They include a brief biography of Robert Louis Stevenson (1850 to 1894). (Takes up 4% of the book.)
(2) Introductory Essay. This was written by the late, famous Russian author Vladimir Nabokov. (Takes up 20%.)
(3) The Actual Story. Its original title is "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde" (1886). (Takes up 65%.)
(4) Afterword to the Story. It is written by a modern writer. (Takes up 8%.)
(5) Selected Bibliography. Outlines great works by and about R.L. Stevenson. (Takes up 3%.)

The introductory essay was an actual lecture Nabokov gave when he was associate professor at Cornell University from 1948 to 1959. It gives a thorough, detailed analysis of this "seldom read" classic.

The afterword consists of a shorter analysis of this classic by the modern writer Dan Chaon. I felt that this afterword provided valuable insight regarding the story of Jekyll and Hyde.

Chaon sums up the entire story: "The structure of ['Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde'] follows a path as indirect and elusive as its multiple narrative voices. With its obliquely recorded incidents, its eyewitness accounts and sealed confessions, it resembles...a [police detective's] casebook--a collection of gathered clues, fragments, through which the clever detective may be able to...project a complete narrative. Perhaps one of the most compelling aspects of this novel [of ten chapters] is that, in fact, there's so much left here for [the reader] to fill in, so many scenes that [the reader] can only imagine. Such a structure creates fertile ground for allegory [a story with symbolic meaning] hunters, and there are indeed many convincing interpretations of this novel...The puzzle-like structure of the novel [which only has eight major male characters] creates a kind of Rorechach test, open to various interpretations." (A Rorechach test is where a person interprets inkblot designs.)

The inspiration of this short novel is said to have come from a dream (or, perhaps more accurately, a nightmare) Stevenson had. His actual writing is amazing and skillful in all chapters. The writing especially of the last two chapters, chapters nine and ten, stood out for me. Here, for example, is his actual description of what happened when somebody observed someone using Dr. Jekyll's concoction: "He put the glass to his lips and drank at one gulp. A cry followed; he reeled, staggered, clutched at the table and held on, staring with injected eyes, gasping with open mouth; as I looked there came, I thought, a change--he seemed to swell--his face became suddenly black and the features seemed to melt and alter--and the next moment, I had sprung to my feet and leaped back against the wall, my arm raised to shield me...[and] my mind submerged in terror."

Finally, the cover of this particular book is interesting. It shows the shadow of a man in a top hat behind a window shade. This can be taken to represent Hyde who is a shadowy character.

In conclusion, this particular book has it all: an introduction by a late, well-known author, an intriguing mystery/horror story by a late, famous nineteenth century author, and an afterword by a gifted, modern writer. Be sure to read this book to learn the true story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde!!!

Since I am a contributor to this volume, I will not offer a "review" in a conventional sense, but I will offer a list of contents, which this website otherwise does not offer. As there are a number of competing paperback editions of Stevenson's novella and the text of the story is essentially the same (allowing for minor editorial variants), readers should consider the issue of what else besides the main text they will be getting for their money, and this edition is unusually rich in supplementary features, so that the original story makes up only 55 of its 222 pages.

In addition to the text of Stevenson's "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," with explanatory notes by the editor, this volume also contains:

Complete FICTION by RLS (but no poetry or NF)

This is an excellent bundle of RLS's novels, novellas, and short stories. In fact, according to the blurb in the Kindle Store, "this collection comprises all the fiction Stevenson ever published." I cannot confirm the veracity of "all" and "ever," but this set contains the titles I had expected to find, plus a few pleasant surprises. It is handsomely formatted, and the content is easily accessible via a detailed, but particularly user-friendly, active TOC (though for some reason "The Dynamiter" is listed twice with two different publishing dates). And the price (at a mere $.99) is certainly great for so much content.

But that content is NOT as "complete" as both titles -- the one on the cover ("Complete R.L. Stevenson") and the one in the Kindle Store listing ("The Complete Collection of R.L. Stevenson") -- might lead you to believe. This set is NOT complete with regard to the totality of his creative output; it contains none of his poetry (such as his well-known "A Child's Garden of Verses") nor any of his travel writing, essays, etc. So while the explanatory note clearly states this is complete only insofar as his fiction is concerned, there is no good reason why the title(s) shouldn't be equally as forthright (as in simply and more truthfully: "The Complete Fiction of RLS").

FYI: A (virtually) truly complete set appears in the Kindle Store by Delphi for $2.99, but like most Delphi collections, it provides much obscure material and various supplements that are of primary interest only to die-hard students of the author. That memory-usurping set is not for me at the present time.

The misleading title(s) aside, this is a fine collection and is well worth the low price. It is everything I had hoped it would be, and I am VERY happy with it.

thoughts on something wiccan

First you don’t need the first book in the series to read this one but it may help understand why Toby was recruited. This is a interesting unique story that is great for Halloween time to read. Toby is trying to get over what happened to him but also find his purpose in life. He wants to help people unfortunately his friend’s words keep haunting him. When the hunters come to recruit him he feels that this is right for him.

I feel Toby is a strong character. His strength comes from within and wanting to help others. His eagerness comes from the guilt he has over what happened with his friends and his desire to do good. He is a good guy and he works hard but like all teens is antsy to move forward to do more. He wants so bad to help others he sometimes forgets the forest beyond the trees. when he is sent on a mission is when all chaos breaks out. And wow what action and twists we get. The end twist for Toby was really fascinating. I mean who knew that could happen?

Natalie kind of rubbed me wrong at first. She seemed to be a generally good person but to much of her wanted to please others and gain the attention of one. Which okay teens are like that. We get our crushes and want them to see us but for Natalie she does things that can harm others and herself. Her actions do have consequences and when she uses her powers to help a friend and the friend feels that what she has planned isn’t enough and changes that all heck breaks loose in her town. This is when toby and his friends arrive in town.

The action is nonstop and wonderfully written. You never catch a breath once we get into Natalie’s town. It is one dangerous moment after another. Toby thinking outside the box to solve the problem is great. We see Toby’s friends once again as well and one of them turns out to be pivotal in helping solve the problem at hand. The warlock involved is pure evil. I think though it is his addiction that drives him more than anything. when they foil his intentions time and time again you just smile and hope they find a way to stop him.

Overall this is a good fast paced book with lots of action and danger. Toby finds his calling and is good at what he does. Natalie finds out what she wishes to do as well but is left with guilt. I hope that gets resolved but I think like Toby it will drive her to be better. I look forward to the next adventure for Toby and seeing how he deals with his latest developments. A wonderful read that had me not wanting to put it down for I didn’t want to miss what would happen next.

A good supernatural adventure with adrenaline pumping action.

When I first joined the blog tour, the blurb hinted at an interesting tale and I was happy to pick it up to read. But when I started reading the book, I realised I had unwittingly picked up a sequel. It seemed to be the second book in a series and I had never read the first one.

So I was kind of surprised that I was able to follow the story from the start. It had enough back story on the characters introduced in the previous book to know what had happened but not so much that it stopped me from being intrigued enough to think of getting the first book. Yes, after this review is done, I am picking up the other book. I want to know the story behind the hero, Toby. I am sure that I will enjoy it as much as this book. So this book can be read as a standalone too.

The book cover was cool but I don't think it suited the story. It doesn't give a scary vibe and the characters depicted on it made me think of them being younger than their book ages.

Another point is that though it is classified as a supernatural horror, I would agree with the supernatural label but not the horror one. At no point did I feel scared during the story. It was more of an adventure and a slight mystery about their powers etc.,

The characters were realistic with Toby, Rachel and Natalie being their normal teenage selves as much as they can in their situation. The story was original in some context while same old stuff in other. But the way the author told the story made it read-worthy. The concept was different and had me on my toes following the actions and reactions of the protagonists. I had fun reading about them and am looking forward to the first book. Yes, that's me reading backwards!
