As a child, Dr. Tess Brannick learned there was something big living in the Pacific Northwest.

Now she's going to prove it.

For centuries, legends of a giant hairy beast roaming the Pacific Northwest have made their way into the collective understanding. Despite the reports, conclusive proof of bigfoot has never been found. But Dr. Tess Brannick has a plan to change all that.

Tess has spent years studying to be up to the task of finding the elusive creature. And now, a year into her research in northern California, she knows she's on the precipice of a world-shattering discovery.

But the more she learns, the more confused she becomes. Nothing is as she expected.

And as a new threat, a threat she unintentionally introduced, appears on the horizon, Tess must come to a decision. Who should she be - the scientist or the human being?

Not up to Par
By Cookie
Being a fan of RD Brady's Belial series I was anticipating another great story in Hominid, and it was for the first third of the book. Tess's hunt for proof that Bigfoot exists and her first encounters with "Charlie" were believable and fun to read. Unfortunately, I just found her being accepted by and living with a whole tribe of Bigfoot too far out to be believable -- no matter how much I was willing to "suspend disbelief" for a work of fiction. It got almost absurd that we were also to believe that the tribe had rescued an abused child from her father and she had lived with them since and learned their language. And in what world does Tess have no problem at all getting custody of the child. Then, of course, all the bad guys get their just desserts and our heroes live happily ever after. I wanted to like this more. I really did, but it was just too far fetched and sugary sweet for me. I kept waiting for the good guys to burst into a chorus of Kumbaya. A good idea gone wrong this time out.

An interesting and quick read.

Another good book by RD Brady. If you like a fast and entertaining read; you will enjoy this book. Gigantopithecus has been acknowledged in the past, so reading about it in the R D's book was not a surprise. I do believe that the time she takes to clarifying her souces; provides a look into the type of research that she does for her novels.

I like that the book is centered around a group of caring individuals. It would be nice to find that such creatures do or at least did exist, but sometimes a mystery of nature is more enticing. I would like to thank R D Brady for her very interesting and involved work she has done for her book "Hominid".

Wow, Big People!
By MotorcycleMama54
Yule five stars, if there were more I would have given more. I loved this book. I have never read anything on Bigfoot before, but have had an interest. I have seen documentaries and have my interest peaked. So when I saw the new book by R. D. Brady, I had to buy it. I found the story to be well written and informative the characters were believable. This story had me shedding some tears, but I loved it. I discovered this author with the Belial series, and found this book just as good as the series. R. D. Brady rocks. I highly recommend all of her books.

  • The Imitation of Christ (Latin: De Imitatione Christi) by Thomas à Kempis is a Christian devotional book. It was first composed in Latin ca.1418-1427. It is a handbook for spiritual life arising from the Devotio Moderna movement, of which Kempis was a member. The Imitation is perhaps the most widely read devotional work next to the Bible and is regarded as a devotional and religious classic. Its popularity was immediate, and it was printed 745 times before 1650. Apart from the Bible, no book has been translated into more languages than the Imitation of Christ. The text is divided into four books, which provide detailed spiritual instructions: "Helpful Counsels of the Spiritual Life", "Directives for the Interior Life", "On Interior Consolation" and "On the Blessed Sacrament". The approach taken in the Imitation is characterized by its emphasis on the interior life and withdrawal from the world, as opposed to an active imitation of Christ by other friars. The book places a high level of emphasis on the devotion to the Eucharist as key element of spiritual life.

    Amazon.com Review
The Thomas à Kempis fan club includes St. Ignatius, Thomas Merton, Thomas More, and even Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. (She reads a chapter of The Imitation of Christ every night before sleep.) Imitation has exerted immense influence on Christian worship, ethics, and church structure, because it gives specific yet broad-minded guidance about the central task of Christian life--learning to live like Jesus. Better to read this book a little here and there, now and then, than to try gobbling it cover to cover. Imitation is no triumph of orderly thinking, but it's a great monument and incentive to deep living. --Michael Joseph Gross

    Listening with the Heart
    By Mark Blackburn
"Want to know the best advice I ever heard?" asked Larry King, in an interview published today in Canada's National Post newspaper: "I never learned ANYTHING while I was talking." 50 years experience at the interviewer's microphone and Larry's best advice comes down to one word. "Listen!"

Coincidentally (or maybe not!) I picked up this just-received book, sent to me by a dear friend who recalled my reviewing an earlier published edition of this same "Ronald Knox translation." And it literally fell open to these words,

"By all means ask questions, but LISTEN to what holy writers have to tell you . . . often enough, (when we hear) Holy Scripture, we are distracted by mere curiosity; we want to seize upon some point and argue about it, when we ought to (listen) and move on."

I flipped open "The Imitation" just now and my eyes (lately fixated on my newest pride and joy were these: (p 32 under the heading, "ABOUT SELF-CONFIDENCE, AND HOW TO GET RID OF SELF-CONCEIT")

"It is nonsense to depend for your happiness on created things (and) why all this self-importance? Do not boast of riches, if you happen to possess them . . . nor about the important friends you have; boast rather of God's friendship.

"Do not give yourself airs, if you have physical strength or beauty; it only takes a spell of illness to waste the one, or mar the other. Do not be self-satisfied about your own skill or cleverness; God is hard to satisfy, and it is from him that they come, all these gifts of nature.

"He reads our thoughts, and will only think the worse of you, if you think yourself better than other people. Even your good actions must not be a source of pride to you: If you have any good qualities to show for yourself, credit your neighbor with even better qualities: that is the way to be humble.

"To be humble is to enjoy undisturbed peace of mind, while the proud heart is swept with gusts of envy and resentment."

    ----

Seven years ago (on my birthday actually) I wrote my very first review for Amazon.com -- for an earlier re-print of this same translation. This latest version, from Ignatius Press of San Francisco, is far-and-away the most beautiful and features cover art by Andrea Solario (1480-1540) from the "Galleria Borghese, Rome" -- painted about a century after Thomas a Kempis produced his "Imitation." Inside artwork includes some marvelous, same-period woodcuts by Albrecht Durer.

    ----

In his (2005) FOREWARD to this new edition, psychologist and priest Benedict Groeschel (seen by millions on his "Sunday Night Live" TV show on EWTN) recalls stealing his first copy of the "Imitation" from the public library in his Caldwell NJ hometown - slipping it into his schoolbag intending to return it "to its rightful place on the shelf, in two weeks time, the ordinary period for a book loan in those days."

"The title suggested to my 12-year-old mind that this must be a story about someone who pretended to be Jesus. I went and sat by a window . . . the spring sun (shining) on the oak table, I can still see my blue-sweatered arm around the book as I began to read:

"'Vanity of Vanities - all is vanity except to love God and serve him alone.' At that moment I was electrified, and I sat there reading page after page . . . . for two hours, mesmerized by the book!"

    ----

As for the translation? Is it really the best-ever? I stand by my thoughts of seven years ago:

"I have several translations of the Imitation but I keep coming back to this one. I believe many readers will find this translation 'flows' better than the others, written as it is in a warm, gentle and accessible style by a master translator and communicator, Monsignor Ronald Knox. A convert to Catholicism who produced an acclaimed Latin-to-English translation of the Bible, Knox completed the first 30 or so chapters of the Imitation before his death in 1957. He wrote to Michael Oakley, two months before his passing: "If I die without finishing my translation, please tell my executors that you are to finish it." The younger Latin scholar did a splendid, seamless job of completing Knox's superb translation of what was--until this century--the second most widely read book in the world. What a delight that this version is once again available, [50 years] after its first publication. If you purchase only one copy of the Imitation in your lifetime, make it this one."

The way to happiness and peace
    By Adam C. Roberts
As a pastor I see so many people who are miserable. They are depressed, filled with worry and have so little joy in their lives. This book speaks specifically to those problems.
In a nutshell this book says that we are miserable because we are trying to find joy in other people and in other things and everything out there will fail us and let us down. The only thing that provides true happiness, peace and contentment is God. The Imitation of Christ goes through exercises on how we can detach ourselves from worldly things to focus on God. Once we are focused solely on God and have the faith that God will provide everything we need, then we can really enjoy the world around us. Enjoy it because once we receive true happiness from God we can see how beautiful the world is and enjoy it as the gift God created it to be, instead of something that we grab onto in the hopes that it will provide us our happiness and security.

  • The Federalist (later known as The Federalist Papers) is a collection of 85 articles and essays written (under the pseudonym Publius) by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay promoting the ratification of the United States Constitution. Seventy-seven were published serially in The Independent Journal and The New York Packet between October 1787 and August 1788. A compilation of these and eight others, called The Federalist; or, The New Constitution, was published in two volumes in 1788 by J. and A. McLean. The collection's original title was The Federalist; the title The Federalist Papers did not emerge until the 20th century. Though the authors of The Federalist Papers foremost wished to influence the vote in favor of ratifying the Constitution, in Federalist No. 1 they explicitly set that debate in broader political terms:It has been frequently remarked, that it seems to have been reserved to the people of this country, by their conduct and example, to decide the important question, whether societies of men are really capable or not, of establishing good government from reflection and choice, or whether they are forever destined to depend, for their political constitutions, on accident and force.

    Amazon.com Review
"This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren ... should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties." So wrote John Jay, one of the revolutionary authors of The Federalist Papers, arguing that if the United States was truly to be a single nation, its leaders would have to agree on universally binding rules of governance--in short, a constitution. In a brilliant set of essays, Jay and his colleagues Alexander Hamilton and James Madison explored in minute detail the implications of establishing a kind of rule that would engage as many citizens as possible and that would include a system of checks and balances. Their arguments proved successful in the end, and The Federalist Papers stand as key documents in the founding of the United States.

    From Library Journal
Pevear and Volokhonsky, winners of the 1991 PEN/Book-of-the-Month Club Translation Prize for their version of Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Brothers Karamazov, have produced the first new translation of Leo Tolstoy's classic Anna Karenina in 40 years. The result should make the book accessible to a new generation of readers. In an informative introduction, Pevear gives the reader a history of the work Tolstoy called his first true novel and which took him some four years to write. Pevear explains how Tolstoy took real events, incorporated them into his novel, and went through several versions before this tale of the married Anna and her love for Count Vronsky emerged in its final form in 1876. It was during the writing of the book that Tolstoy went through a religious crisis in his life, which is reflected in this novel. The translation is easily readable and succeeds in bringing Tolstoy's masterpiece to life once again. For all libraries. Ron Ratliff, Kansas State Univ., Manhattan

    Serious Political Thinking
    By James E. Egolf
The new edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS edited by Clinton Rossiter and co. is probably the best paperback edition. Rossiter and Charles Kesler did a good job in presenting these papers, and their explanations and notes make this book clear for readers. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS alone are an important source of serious political thinking. In an age of almost unbridled political power, corruption, empire buidling, etc. THE FEDERALIST PAPERS are important reminder of what a Free Republic (not an empire) should be.

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were written by Alexander Hamilton (1757-1804), John Jay (1745-1829), and James Madison (1751-1835). Due to concerns about the New York State legislators ratifying the The U.S. Constitution, these papers were journal pieces written to New York journals and newspapers to convince both the residents and state legislators to ratify The U.S. Constitution. One should note there were other published articles supporting ratification of The U.S. Constitution and other articles can be read in a text titled FRIENDS OF THE CONSTITUTION.

What is alarming about THE FEDERALISTS PAPERS is that they were written for most readers. If one were to write such articles these days, most Americans would not read them nor comprehend them. This is a sad commentary on Americans regarding serious political writing regarding their birthright. If THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were assigned to high school kids, whoever would make such an assignment would be fired or worse.

THE FEDERALIST PAPERS give important explanations of the separation of powers, limits of each branch of the central government (The Federal Government), and how political power should be used within severe limitations. These articles were a brilliant attempt to mitigate fears that The U.S. Constitution would give far too much power to the the central or federal government.

The late Clinton Rossiter had a useful suggestion for those who did not want to read all 85 of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. He suggested that the best numbers were 1,2,6,9,10, 14, 15, 16,23, 37, 39,47, 49, 51, 62, 70, 78, 84, and 85. Those readers who read these numbered papers would probably want to read the remainder.

This newer paperback edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS has some valuable features to help the reader navigate complex political thinking. The U.S. Constitution is placed in the end of the book with page numbers of the book whereby the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS refer to that section of the U.S. Constitution. This gives clarity as to exactly what the authors were arguing regarding specific sections of the proposed U.S. Constitution. Another important feature of this edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS consists of the notes. The men who wrote THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were learned men who had seriously studied history and political thought. The notes explain the examples of Ancient Greek and Roman History used to make some of the arguments. These notes also refer to examples of Renaissance and English History which were also used to make good arguments from historical examples. One could get first rate learning experience of Ancient Greek and Roman History as well as a better view of European Renaissance and English History.

Readers should not forget that the authors of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS were responding to the Anti-Federalists and their articles titled THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS. Too often the Anti-Federalists are referred to as obstrcutionists and narrow minded men. This is simply not true. The ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS were as well written and brilliantly argued as THE FEDERALIST PAPERS.
One should note that one of the major objections of the Anti-Federalists to ratification of The U.S. Constitution was that it did not contain a Bill of Rights. The Federalists took this argument seriously. Basically, one could argue that without the Anti-Federalists, there would have been no Bill of Rights. Ergo, without The Bill of Rights, there would have been no U.S. Constitution. The Anti-Federalists were very important in the ratification of The U.S. Constitution.

Anyone who wants to define who Americans should be should read THE FEDERALIST PAPERS. They should also read THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS and read clear, informed, and well written political theory from men who could actually think. Most political hacks and too many American citizens are not even vaguely aware of this important political writing. Yet, this political writing is the very best American political thinking in U.S. History. This reviewer highly recommends the Rossiter-Kesler edition of THE FEDERALIST PAPERS and other editions of THE ANTI-FEDERALIST PAPERS.

    The rich keep getting richer...
    By Stephen
and the Mentor Federalist Papers keep getting better. Yes, that's right. They actually managed to improve on it. The great new additions include the Declaration, the Articles, and an excellent new introduction by Charles Kessler. I think the killer feature for new readers will be the notes in the back, which, if you (like me) are shaky in your Greek history (and the finer points of European), do a great job of explaining allusions and references by the Papers. Be sure to use this feature -- there's no indication in the text that a note exists, but you should just look if you're unsure of a historical setting (or something similar), and there probably will be one.
On the minus side, I do miss Rossiter's introduction. It wasn't as good for laying out the plan of the work, but it should have been included (along with Kessler's) for its excellent overview of the contemporary situation and the philosophy behind the papers. Also, I feel that Rossiter's contents were slightly better than Kessler's. And, the page numbers are changed, invalidating older references to them. But all in all it's an improvement, and certainly the Mentor edition is the only one to have. Period. It's the one used by at least some of the Supreme Court Justices, and it retains that single dominating feature, Rossiter's cross-referenced Constitution (and index of ideas).
As for the Papers themselves, of course, they need no review. They are the first and ultimate Constitutional commentary, and fascinating reading besides. As literature they stand out for the exceptional style (all the more remarkable considering the haste in which they were written) and clear thinking, and more than any other book they define how the U.S. _should_ work.
All in all, this is one of the best book bargains on the market, that rare coincidence where best edition meets mass-market paperback. What are you waiting for?

The best edition of the Federalist Papers
    By Chitown Reader
This is the best edition of the Federalist Papers. It includes many extras, but especially useful is the text of the US Constitution with cross-references to specific pages of the Federalist Papers referring to that provision. I highly recommend the Federalist Papers generally, and more specifically this edition to anyone wishing to know more about the founding and ratification of the Constitution.

    Highly recommended descriptive YA novel
    By Chris Gregory
I found Delbert's Weir to be a well-written, aboriginal-inspired YA novel. The characters, Delbert and his two friends, were well-developed, believable and, for me, especially identifiable. Having grown up next to the Couer d'Alene, and having taught and coached most of my life on lands of the Yakama and Colville, I found the knowledge of Native American traditions and skills to be quite accurate.

Also, this young man against nature, against himself theme is extraordinarily identifiable. During my summer before high school three of my friends and I had a similar camping experience in eastern Washington. That heightened this story for me.

Finally, I must compliment the writing style of our author. Her descriptive style with details allows the reader to feel right there, in the wilderness, sensing the feelings of our characters. Highly recommended for YA and the young at heart of all ages.

    Engaging Read
    By J. Fifer
Readers of Delbert's Weir will enjoy the journey they take with the main character as he struggles to prove himself in this historical fiction novel. The author's knowledge of Native American culture helps her paint a vivid picture of the setting, placing the reader right in the action. The supporting characters are realistic and add to the depth of the story. The plot carries many exciting twists that keeps the reader intrigued. The book delves into the insecurities of youth....insecurities that are very relatable to youth today. As Delbert navigates his way through this adventure, we watch as he transforms as a person. Delbert's Weir is both entertaining and engaging. I would highly recommend this book to readers of all ages.

Delbert's Weir a book for all ages
    By Roni McFadden
Review of "Delbert's Weir", written by Carmen Peone, by Roni McFadden

I found this book very entertaining as well as extremely educational. The author's knowledge of the Native American way of doing things shines through in this story over and over again. It was obvious that the author researched and has a close connection with the "old ways". I found it a fascinating read.

Ms. Peone also has a talent for drawing pictures with her words allowing the reader to "see" what Delbert was doing and why. Delbert and his two friends are in the wilderness alone and as things don't turn out as planned, they must invent and improvise if they are to survive.

Here is an example of her descriptive writing. I just loved this paragraph as Delbert is desperate to get a fire started:
"With blood trickling, he picked up the flint rock and attempted a third strike. This time sparks ignited and a small stream of smoke wove its way around moss and pine needles. Hope swirled around his muscles as they began to relax. A small flame poked its head out, hungry, begging for more fuel." "He hunkered down, leaned closer and blew a whisper of air, just enough to breathe life into the tiny orange flicker."

Even though it is written for Young Adults, I found it suitable for older folks as well, and would recommend it to anyone with a sense of adventure who loves to understand how things were done 150 years ago. I give this book 5 stars!

    Great adventure story
    By C. Bayne
This is the first Allan Quartermain book I've read, and it certainly won't be the last. In fact, I just started reading King Solomon's Mines.

The Kindle formatting was OK for this. The one gripe I had is that there were various end notes that were really at the end of the book. Because it's kind of hard to turn real pages and then flip back, it would have been nice if the notes had been at the ends of chapters.

However, since this version was free, I'm not going to dock it a star. There weren't that many notes anyway, and they weren't that vital to the story.

This is the story of Allan Quartermain's last adventure. He, Sir Henry Curtis, and Commander John Good go in search of a lost city of white people in Africa. There is also Umslopagaas, a Zulu ex-chief/warrior, who might be my favorite character. I hope he shows up in another Allan Quartermain novel. (Curtis & Good are also in King Solomon's Mines, and so far, Umslopagaas has been mentioned, but I don't know if he'll actually show up.)

The book is a lot of fun. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes a good adventure story.

    A Top Shelf Adventure
    By C. E. Martin
I started reading Allan Quatermain stories with King Solomon's Mines because I knew the title and, frankly, it was free. They are fantastic, gripping adventures with great characters and vividly described, amazing settings. They are in public domain, but don't let their age hold you back; they are written in a style that feels as current as anything written this year. Read King Solomon's Mines first, then Allan Quatermain; these are the first two written. Best of all, I understand that there are about a dozen more Quatermain books (prequels and others) which are also available for free!

    High Drama in high style
    By Mendy Ouzillou
Again I ask myself, how come I've never heard of this author before? His storytelling skill surpasses most others for sure. He tells the story in high prose. Very poetic at times, entertaining and suspenseful. You love every character!

I've made it a goal to read everything H.R. Haggard has written in more or less the order in which they were written. This one makes the 3rd novel I've read. They have all been terrific and I coulnd't put this one down. The plot development proceeds at a great pace. The characters (old and new) are always fun and true to life. The ending in this book surprised me. But, I won't say how as I hate spoilers.

H.R. Haggard's books should all be movies! I love them all and I really loved this one. Add to the fact that they are free and you can't lose.

    From the Author
The Fredorian Destiny is the second book in the Evaran Chronicle series. This book is the first voluntary adventure of Dr. Snowden and his neice, Emily with Evaran. It is roughly 90k in length and is the length going forward for coming books in the series.

The setting of this book is the local galactic region that Earth is a part of. While the Awakening touched upon a lot of areas in the series setting, this book focuses on humanity's role to date in the galactic community. Dr. Snowden and Emily will experience new alien races, technology, and come to grips with what traveling with a powerful being is like.

The focus of the series is to explore time, space, parallel worlds, what-if scenarios, and other places. The setting isinspired from the likes of Marvel, D&D, Dr. Who, Star Trek, andvarious other science fiction cosmologies. It is something I have beenbuilding for a long time. Along with that were many storyline ideas Ijotted down during that time, which will now be realized in this series. The genres covered will range from alternative history to space opera, but time travel and adventure will always be at the heart of it. Writing this book was a labor of love for me and a chance to get out theseideas.

I love science, and am an avid reader of it. I will always strive to include it where I can amongst the more fantastical elementsthat I need to extrapolate on (ex. time rifts). Being from the techworld, there is also a heavy tech element to it. This ties into thetheme of knowledge is power. I also love horror, so will strive to addelements of that as well. The Fredorian Destiny has elements of all the above.  I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it.

Although books in the series are sequential, they can be read stand-alone. The suggested reading order is:

The Arrival - The Evaran Chronicles Prequel
The Awakening - Book 1 of the Evaran Chronicles
The Fredorian Destiny - Book 2 of the Evaran Chronicles

    About the Author

It is a passion of mine now, and exploring my setting with it has been an awesome journey. I work in the information technology field and have my bachelor’s and master’s degrees in it. It has helped me to shape some of the concepts I write about. I also enjoy keeping up on futurology and science in general. Great New Universe
    By Regina
I really enjoyed this listen. Adair Hart creates a rich, full, complex universe that gives full voice to the ancient astronaut theory! Earth is a protected planet but not all alien species obey the law.

Evaran is a time traveler who is working to correct the timeline of a set of earthlings that he rescued from a rogue race of aliens in a different book (which I am going to buy because I enjoyed this one so much!) The travelers visit new places and discover a human destiny that only Evaran can help them achieve. Except they will have to maneuver through time to confront conspiracies, political moves, and one alien who is determined to get even with Evaran for the loss of his family at all costs! Through it all, they care for and protect one another as fully as they are able and discover new companions who they come to love as well.

I hope there is more to come so I can discover who Evaran is and where he comes from.

Time travel, strange creatures, great imagination...
    By montzalee wittmann
The Fredorian Destiny by Adair Hart is another great sci-fi/fantasy novel, second in the series but can be read as a stand alone. This continues from where Evaran (alien that saved them in book one) comes back to talk to Dr Snowden and Emily and takes them again on a trip. This trip they end up on a mission to find the crystals. Of course they are not without trouble along the way, bounty hunters, creatures, elements of all kinds. This book, like the first, still has the crazy and imaginative wonder of new worlds, time travel, weird adventures, crazy twists, turns, creatures, and plot. The characters have stayed true from last book. The may be a little less fight scenes and a bit more sleuthing from the last book but not much. Although I do enjoy his fight scenes with the crazy creatures and strange weapons they have. Never dull. Enjoyed it as I did the first book! Don't wait to start this series, it is a hoot!
I received this book for a honest review and it in no way effects my rating or content.

    Great read!
    By Kittym
After reading the first book in the series, I wanted more - more character development, more story. And I am a satisfied reader. The plot was full and well-developed. The characters had more depth and became characters I cared about and found interesting. There were some twists and turns and surprises. I am not a traditional Sci-fi reader, but I am finding this story spans the genres. As I turned the final page, I wondered how long I would have to wait to visit with these people again! I look forward to the next episode. Highly recommended!

  • Macbeth (full title The Tragedy of Macbeth) is a tragedy written by William Shakespeare, and is considered one of his darkest and most powerful works. Set in Scotland, the play illustrates the damaging physical and psychological effects of political ambition on those who seek power for its own sake. The play is believed to have been written between 1599 and 1606, and is most commonly dated 1606. The earliest account of a performance of what was probably Shakespeare's play is the Summer of 1606, when Simon Forman recorded seeing such a play at the Globe Theatre. It was first published in the Folio of 1623, possibly from a prompt book. It was most likely written during the reign of James I, who had been James VI of Scotland before he succeeded to the English throne in 1603. James was a patron of Shakespeare's acting company, and of all the plays Shakespeare wrote during James's reign, Macbeth most clearly reflects the playwright's relationship with the sovereign.

    Amazon.com Review
A lush, cautionary tale of a life of vileness and deception or a loving portrait of the aesthetic impulse run rampant? Why not both? After Basil Hallward paints a beautiful, young man's portrait, his subject's frivolous wish that the picture change and he remain the same comes true. Dorian Gray's picture grows aged and corrupt while he continues to appear fresh and innocent. After he kills a young woman, "as surely as if I had cut her little throat with a knife," Dorian Gray is surprised to find no difference in his vision or surroundings. "The roses are not less lovely for all that. The birds sing just as happily in my garden."

As Hallward tries to make sense of his creation, his epigram-happy friend Lord Henry Wotton encourages Dorian in his sensual quest with any number of Wildean paradoxes, including the delightful "When we are happy we are always good, but when we are good we are not always happy." But despite its many languorous pleasures, The Picture of Dorian Gray is an imperfect work. Compared to the two (voyeuristic) older men, Dorian is a bore, and his search for ever new sensations far less fun than the novel's drawing-room discussions. Even more oddly, the moral message of the novel contradicts many of Wilde's supposed aims, not least "no artist has ethical sympathies. An ethical sympathy in an artist is an unpardonable mannerism of style." Nonetheless, the glamour boy gets his just deserts. And Wilde, defending Dorian Gray, had it both ways: "All excess, as well as all renunciation, brings its own punishment."

    From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. First published in 1890 in Lippincott's Monthly Magazine and the following year in novel form, The Picture of Dorian Gray categorically changed Victorian Britain and the landscape of literature. An ostentatious, self-confessed aesthete, known for his wit and intellect, Wilde not only had to endure his prose being labeled "poisonous" and "vulgar," but also suffer its use as evidence in the ensuing trial, resulting in his eventual imprisonment for crimes of "gross indecency." Frankel's introduction provides a deft preliminary analysis of the novel itself—exploring etymology and extensive editorial alterations (both accidental and deliberate)—and offers valuable insight into the socio-cultural juxtaposition of aristocratic Victorian society and the London underworld. The original typescript provides the unique opportunity to examine what was considered acceptable in both the US and UK at the time. Intriguing annotations allude to Wilde's influences and enterprising range of reference, incorporating art, poetry, literature, Greek mythology, philosophy, and fashion (certain to inspire further reading; an appendix is provided). Comparisons are drawn between Dorian Gray and Wilde's other literary output, as well as to the work of Walter Pater. Numerous illustrations subtly compliment Frankelÿs inferences. A fine contextualization of a major work of fiction profoundly interpreted, ultimately riveting. (Mar.)

    From School Library Journal
Grade 10 Up-"The Whole Story" format provides illustrations and annotations to the classic text. Ross's lively and sophisticated cartoons add interest, and historical information helps readers place the novel in proper context and gives insight into its characters. The problem with this attractive, glossy layout, however, is that the text and the quotes pulled from it are not always on the same page. Further, some illustrations and notations visually cut into the narrative and may distract readers. For example, a drawing appears on the first page along with the passage, "In the centre of the room, clamped to an upright easel, stood the full-length portrait of a young man of extraordinary personal beauty," but that quote does not appear until the second page of the story. Useful as a supplement to the original novel, but not a replacement for it.

No need to avoid Shakespeare anymore
    By David E. Levine
I consider myself to be a reasonably literate individual but, I have always avoided Shakespeare since I cannot make sense of the text. But now, I have fianally read Macbeth because, with "No Fear Shakespeare," each left hand page is written in the original whereas the right hand page is a plain English translation. So now I know, that when a porter says "it makes him stand to and not stand to," he is not referring about someone standing up on his feet. Instead, it means that alcoholic drinks make a man have an erection but then, lose the erection. How true is that and how cool is it to be able to understand that? Seriously, Macbeth is a great tale of ambition, deception and conscience. Thanks to this innovative book, I was able to read the original, then, after reading each page, I referred to the translation so I could understand. It was fun to read lines in the original, try to work out what I thought it meant and then check whether I was right. I recommend this as a way finally read and appreciate Macbeth.

    Suits our needs

I won't even attempt to critique Shakespeare's work, as some have done here. I'm not reviewing MacBeth, but this particular version of it. As a homeschooling Mom with three highschool students, the only way we could get through Shakespeare's works is by having a copy of Shakespeare Made Easy on hand. As it is, we completed 5 plays this year - all done orally, with each of us taking several parts. While I think it's important that my kids read Shakespeare in it's original format (and they did), I had the Shakespeare Made Easy translation handy so that I could give simple, concise explanations whenever they just didn't "get it". I recommend these books for that purpose - not for the watered down versions of these classics, but to make them understandable to the average student who might otherwise find Shakespeare's works boring and a waste of time (as many students do).

    Best Yet!
    By D. Durkee
I've been playing this in a regular senior English class. Many of the students are finally understanding the play. The actors in this cd do a wonderful job interpreting their lines. The Scottish accents are well done. Sound effects make it vivid. It's the best production I've found to date.
