  • As a widow with a child, Elinore Pruitt left Denver in 1909 and set out for Wyoming, where she hoped to buy a ranch. Determined to prove that a lone woman could survive the hardships of homesteading, she initially worked as a housekeeper and hired hand for a neighbor—a kind but taciturn Scottish bachelor whom she eventually married. Spring and summers were hard, she concedes, and were taken up with branding, farming, doctoring cattle, and other chores. But with the arrival of fall, Pruitt found time to take her young daughter on camping trips and serve her neighbors as midwife, doctor, teacher, Santa Claus, and friend. She provides a candid portrait of these and other experiences in twenty-six letters written to a friend back in Denver. 'Letters Of A Woman Homesteader' is described by the 'Wall Street Journal' as "warmly delightful, vigorously affirmative," this unsurpassed classic of American frontier life, complete with many illustrations will charm today's audience as much as it fascinated readers when it was first published in 1914.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 7 Up–After deciding that city life as a laundress wasn't for her, Elinore Pruitt, a young widowed mother, accepted an offer to assist with a ranch in Wyoming, work that she found exceedingly more rewarding. In this delightful collection of letters, she describes these experiences to her former employer, Mrs. Coney. Pruitt's charming descriptions of work, travels, neighbors, animals, land and sky have an authentic feel. The West comes alive, and everyday life becomes captivating. Her writing is clear, witty, and entertaining. The 26 letters are brief and tell about her life on the ranch in the early 1900s. The author frequently and unnecessarily apologizes for being too wordy; she begs forgiveness for many "faults," like being forgetful, ungrateful, inconsistent and indifferent, all without apparent cause. On occasion, language reflects the racial prejudice of the time. Many times, Pruitt attempts to portray the culturally diverse characters she meets by writing their various dialects as they sound. Kate Fleming's narration is as smooth as the writing, perfectly transitioning from one accent to the next. She reads with a calm, down-to-earth tone, which suits the writing well.–Kariana Cullen Gonzales, Lincoln Consolidated High School, Ypsilanti, MI

    Delightful and interesting!

Since this Kindle book has no introduction or information on the book page, I copied a publishers note I found on on the Google books website which provides some background information about the author. "The writer of the following letters is a young woman who lost her husband in a railroad accident and went to Denver to seek support for herself and her two-year-old daughter, Jerrine. Turning her hand to the nearest work, she went out by the day to work as a housecleaner and laundress. Later, seeking to better herself, she accepted employment as a housekeeper for a well-to-do Scottish cattleman, Mr. Stewart, who had taken up a quarter-section in Wyoming. The letters, written through several years to a former employer in Denver, tell of her new life in the new country. They are genuine letters, and are printed as written, except for occasional omissions and alterations of names."

The letters begin in 1909, apparently right after a homestead act made it possible for the author, Elinore Pruitt Stewart, to claim a homestead of 160 acres in Wyoming. Ms. Stewart is a very resourceful woman as well as a wonderful story-teller. She explains that she never received formal education but she refers to current literature so I am guessing that she has learned to write from her interest in reading. Apparently she was a prolific author in her time and one of her descendants has published a book about her. (There are pictures of her on the web and more information if you want to know more about her.)

Elinore has a cheerful and pragmatic approach to life making her well-written letters a lot of fun to read. She mostly writes about events, usually involving meeting some of the other inhabitants of the area, ranging from mountain men to Mormons. She loves to go camping and several times recounts setting out on her horse with her baby and camping in the wilderness. She brings very little supplies, catching trout and snaring rabbits for food. She also does some description of her everyday life which apparently was very busy and full of hard work but she always describes it as fulfilling.

I enjoyed this slice of life from another time. It is a quick fun read and definitely worth the price!

    Wonderful and highly recommended

This was a great peek into the life of a woman homesteader. I was delighted to see (through Ms. Pruitt's writings) how many other women homesteaders there were in that time. She has such an engaging writing style and it kept me riveted for the entire collection of letters.

By chance I noticed that one of the films on my netflix list is called Heartland. It's a movie from 1980 whose main character, Elinor, is based on these writings. I'm looking forward to seeing the movie even more after reading these letters.

If you like smart, spunky, DIY characters, you'll love Ms. Pruitt's writings.

Within hours he finds himself in Richmond, Missouri—the middle of the center of the heart of America—and the dead bodies start piling up fast. Weird thing is, the dead bodies are all over 80. And they're all Polish immigrants, child survivors of the Nazi death camps. But who would want to kill a bunch of octogenarians, and why? What do they know that Beckett doesn't? With time running out before the next victim loses his life, Beckett's got to unravel the clues and reveal a secret that has been buried for more than seventy years. A secret going back to the earliest days of World War II.

    Keep the Jamie Beckett coming!
    By Clark Winegar
I'm loving these Jamie Beckett novels. Death and Taxes is a great new fiasco in a totally different setting with some great new characters, but still the same, awesome Beckett. As far as Bruce Call novels go, I would put this one between Toppled Cross (my favorite so far) and Deadlock, but they're all great well worth the read. Death and Taxes is fun because you get just enough information to start making your own guesses at the mystery, but not enough to know if your guesses are right. It's a fun ride and keeps you wondering what will happen next and who done it.

Well written and quite funny. It claims to be a Jamie Beckett "Fiasco" and it is, but he's quite the interesting guy. I hope Bruce writes more in this series because I've really enjoyed the first two!

  • The Republic (Greek: Πολιτεία, Politeia; Latin: De Republica) is a Socratic dialogue, written by Plato around 380 BCE, concerning the definition of justice (δικαιοσύνη), the order and character of the just city-state and the just man—for this reason, ancient readers used the name On Justice as an alternative title (not to be confused with the spurious dialogue also titled On Justice). The dramatic date of the dialogue has been much debated and though it might have taken place some time during the Peloponnesian War, "there would be jarring anachronisms if any of the candidate specific dates between 432 and 404 were assigned".Plato's best-known work, it has proven to be one of the world's most influential works of philosophy and political theory, both intellectually and historically. In it, Socrates along with various Athenians and foreigners discuss the meaning of justice and examine whether or not the just man is happier than the unjust man by considering a series of different cities coming into existence "in speech", culminating in a city called Kallipolis (Καλλίπολις), which is ruled by philosopher-kings; and by examining the nature of existing regimes. The participants also discuss the theory of forms, the immortality of the soul, and the roles of the philosopher and of poetry in society.

    Necessary Reading For ANYONE
    By John DePoe
Plato's Republic is unparalleled in its coverage of all areas of life. While Plato addresses metaphysical issues, he does so with language and analogies that most people can grasp with studious reading. But Plato talks about much more than metaphysics. Marriage, music, war, kings, procreation and more are all topics of discussion for Plato's dialog. In addition to the teachings about life, this book also offers a great introduction to philosophy. The famous "cave story" illustrates not only the purpose of philosophy, but also the inherent difficulties. While this book is absolutely necessary for students of philosophy and religion, I think there are golden truths for all people no matter what they do.
So, why this particular translation of the work? This translation offers the best ease in reading while mainting a tight grasp of the original Greek meanings of Plato's text. Besides, it isn't that expensive.
This book is clearly a timeless classic, and if you can't read classical Greek, this translation is probably the best you will get.

3948 to read the actual book.
    By Wade Babcock
You get what you pay for I suppose. Starts with a very long introduction or maybe you would call it a lecture about the book and Plato. If you want to just read the book itself you need to jump all the way to location 3948. Really needs at least a table of contents with 2 entries; one for the intro and one for the actual start of the book.

The environment has changed in their absence and the experiment in human survival is preparing to move into phase III. Yet even as they close in on their goal of returning to the surface of the planet to re-establish a human presence on earth, the risks inherent with achieving that goal become increasingly clear and intimidatingly unavoidable.

Excellent 4th edition to the Lifeboat Augusta Series....bring on the 5th!!
    By Amanda-Jo Nicholson
As a "card carrying member" of the "I don't read sci-fi books" club - this series of stories has taken me completely by surprise and I am totally and 100% hooked! Let me warn you now - this is NOT bedtime reading...I could not put it down, I quite literally read until my eyes hurt...and simply HAD to finish the book the very next day.
My biggest recommendation would be that even if you don't think you like science fiction stories, but you do like to read books that are well written, thrilling stories with strong characters and even stronger plot lines (with a wonderful number of twists and turns) - reading these books is a must!

    Two Enthusiastic Thumbs Up!
    By BethanyV
Have you been looking for a new chapter book to read to your young adventures to expand their imagination and vocabulary? Are your children compelled by pirates searching for hidden treasure, and sailing the high seas? Are you enthusiastic about encryption? Are you captivated by beautiful, and simple illustrations? Captain Z and the Treasure of Castle Island has all that and more! Best of all, the story focuses, not on any traditional pirate cliche with peg leg or goofy antics, but instead on a scrappy young girl, Captain Z, and her struggle to be a pirate and/or a heroine.

    I love this book
    By Celia'smom
I love this book! My five year old is too young to read it on her own for now, but it is perfect for reading out loud together. It's a rare story that can entertain both the parent and the child. The vocabulary is sometimes advanced, but all the better for enhancing your child's literacy. Also, it is so great to read a story with a female protagonist that is not a princess or trying to be one. She's fearless pirate adventurer and a delight. Sequel??

Read this with my 6- and 9-year olds. Both described it as 'very exciting,' 'adventurous,' and 'funny.' Both are eager to know if there are sequels planned.

A terrorist faction tries to take control of the island, threatening to destroy everything in this thrilling sequel!
    By Chris F.
Atlantic City has broken off from the mainland to The Event, the cataclysm making it an island unto itself, stranded in the middle of the ocean with no other life to be found. After the chaos of dictatorship from Tiberius and the successful uprising led by Theo and his allies in Atlantic Island: Revised and Expanded Edition (Atlantic Island Trilogy Book 1), this story picks up directly from where we left off.

Theo, having somehow mysteriously being transported back to his own universe (!), does his best to figure out what happened to him. Wanting to help his friends, he’s being questioned by the government as to what happened to Atlantic City. Meanwhile, in another universe, Atlantic Island struggles to pick up the pieces, reform society and move forward, trying to figure out how to survive and solve the mysteries surrounding their new reality. Led by Kylee, she pioneers a pact forged from the crucible of this war, working together with The Council to reform the island into three distinct territories that work in cooperation with each other.

But the peace between them is a fragile one and their different ideas and operating philosophies create tension underneath the surface. Exploiting that tension over the intervening years is The Sons, a terrorist group with a hidden agenda, creating chaos and harboring a terrible secret that gives them a distinct advantage. When all of these threads are woven together, it sets the stage for the exciting final third of the novel, where everything is brought to light, agendas are revealed and war threatens to destroy everything that has been built to date. Many people die, unusual alliances are formed, armies march against one another and leaders clash over the island’s fate. Will Atlantic Island and its inhabitants even survive the coming conflagration?

All of your favorite characters are back from the first novel, including Theo, Kylee, Bill, who’s now a police officer, and Ryan, now the resident head of the science team probing the strange enigmas of the island as well as procuring resources. We’re also introduced to wonderful new characters including Dennis, Bill’s partner, and Galaxi, a teenager pulled into these events after enduring some horrors in her home territory, The Sands. Their stories are all intertwined in this larger conflict slowly being played out across the island. You feel of each of them, the private hells they endure as a result of their circumstances and watch them grow and mature over the course of the novel. Each one is given time to shine as their story arcs are developed. I especially liked how one particular character slowly evolved over the course of the novel, as it took him in unusual directions and made him a little more sympathetic and layered, especially considering his past history. To reveal who this person is would be a huge spoiler but you’ll know who I’m referring to by the time you reach the end of the novel.

The concept of Atlantic Island presents a backdrop for a very compelling storyline for this trilogy. As the plot picks up speed, it became more difficult to find space to take a breather as I raced through the pages to see what would happen next. It also really embraces its science fiction concept of alternate realities, time travel, and parallel universes, explaining many of the questions from the first novel while also creating intriguing new ones that beg to be answered. I was glad to see this happen, as these concepts and more added to the unpredictability and surprises that came with each twist and turn of the story. And when it all culminates into a powerful and poignant finale, we hope our heroes are victorious against these new, powerful antagonists.

The finale of this novel propels the reader headfirst into what looks to be a very promising final third book in this captivating trilogy. This ultimate battle of good versus evil incorporating a science fiction setting was a real adventure and an absolute pleasure to read, gripping me from the first page until the last.

Please note that I was given a free copy of this eBook. A favorable review was never expected or asked for, only an honest one.

White Fang: Filibooks Classics (Illustrated), by Jack London

White Fang is a novel by American writer Jack London.

The story takes place in Yukon Territory, Canada, during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush, and follows the life of the wolf-dog hybrid White Fang. The novel explores how animals view the world and how they view humans.

    From School Library Journal
Gr 2-4–London's novel portrays the interior life of mistreated part-wolf White Fang while exploring the fundamental nature of wild animals and the brutality inherent in vast Alaskan landscapes and inside men's hearts. It does not seem suitable reading material for primary-grade children, and Lutin's picture-book adaptation does not make an effective argument for the attempt. From the first page, in which White Fang's half-dog mother runs with her mate, One-Eye, Lutin falters; London revels in detailing natural impulses and viciousness, but this adaptation betrays his text with a ludicrous statement about the pair's love for one another. Later pages similarly fail to capture the spirit of London's harsh study of instinct and domestication. Guilloppe's visually arresting illustrations may appeal to some comic-book fans, and several spreads effectively use striking silhouettes to convey menace and action without gruesome detail. But overall, the digital artwork's strong lines and vivid colors feel disappointingly flat, lacking the nuance and delicate power of a natural landscape. While the adaptation glosses over many troubling and violent subplots, like initial owner Gray Beaver's descent into alcoholism and White Fang's repeated beatings and deadly dog fights, Lutin includes two gunshots. Many readers enjoy stories of nature, wilderness, and survival; books by Jean Craighead George, Gary Paulsen, and Roland Smith should more than suffice until they choose to explore Jack London's savage classics unchanged.–Robbin E. Gr. 6-8. Ed Young, whose haunting illustrations of the wolf made his Caldecott- winning Lon Po Po (1989) so memorable, was well chosen as the illustrator for the Scribner Illustrated Classics edition of White Fang. Jack London's 1906 novel. As many will remember, London tells the story of a wolf-dog who endures great cruelty before he comes to know human kindness. The 12 pastel illustrations illuminate the text with their dramatic use of light and dark, sensitively delineated forms, and soft, subtle shades of color. A handsome new edition of a longtime favorite. Carolyn Phelan

    Great Story
    By Cheryl Koopmann
This is a great story that I have read many times. It is one of those books that I fall back on when I need a comforting story to read.
It follows the life of one poor dog as he moves from one master to another, and even ends up as a fighting dog at one point. Its a bit like "Black Beauty" I guess seeing as it follows an animals life, but white fang is more of a story. White Fang is not just some docile horse but a real wild dog that has survived where others haven't. A great read and a great story.

    Adventure in the Wild
    By Paul McGrath
As a boy I used to love books like this, about untamed nature and woodlore and woodcraft, but it has been many years since I've read them. I recently had the occasion to revisit this excellent novel, and found that it has aged quite well and is still a terrific read.

The story has to do with a wolf named White Fang, and begins before he was born, with his father and mother leading a pack in the dead of winter in the frozen Canadian wilderness. There is no game around and all are starving. They harass and harry a beleaguered dog-sled team over the course of several days, picking the dogs off one by one, then finally surrounding the one remaining man. He builds a ring of fire to protect himself from these ravenous wolves, but knows he soon must succumb to exhaustion. He notices the she-wolf, sitting patiently outside the ring, seemingly indifferent--except for the string of drool coming out of her mouth in anticipation of making a meal out of him.

That is the lesson here, in this story of White Fang. It is a savage world, a world in which you either kill or are killed, eat or are eaten. His first day out of the den he kills and eats a small bird, then in turn is almost eaten by a hawk. He observes a porcupine roll itself into a ball to defend itself against a lynx, then observes the lynx yowl in pain after foolishly getting stung. The lynx plays another prominent role. Trying to survive a typical lean winter, White Fang's mother takes the desperate step of going to the absent lynx's den to eat its offspring. The enraged lynx later comes to their den and attacks, but with the help of a growing White Fang, they defeat it. It also becomes a meal.

White Fang eventually gets taken in by men, first an Indian tribe where he is "tamed" with brutality, then by white traders who use him for their own base purposes. Through it all we see the cruel world in which he lives and feel his pain and hunger and anger. It is a well-plotted adventure carefully observed, and serves as a great reminder of how savage the untamed wilderness is, and that mankind is often only a bare step above it.

When the way of the wild was a fact of life

Written almost of century ago by Jack London, both of these stories have truly stood the test of time. Both of them are based on London's experience in the Yukon, and both are written from the point of view of dogs.
In "The Call of the Wild", the dog Buck is kidnapped from an easy life and sold to a sled team during the Klondike Gold Rush. In spite of the numerous cruelties inflicted on him, Buck learns to survive. Eventually, he returns to the wild and to run with the wolves.
In "White Fang", the story is reversed. White Fang is three-quarters wolf and was born in the wild. Through a series of events, he is domesticated and eventually becomes a tame and loving pet.
There is much to learn in both of these stories. One thing is the way of animals and their life in the wild. Another is of the way of life in the Yukon. And of the men, both brutal and kind, who rely on the dogs to pull the sleds.
Jack London used his words well. There's an elegant cadence and a vigorous spirit. His love for the animals comes through as well as his respect for the wild forces of nature. And the theme that life changes are really possible because of environmental forces.
London didn't set out to write a story about the glorification of nature or vanishing wildlife. Indeed, during his short lifetime (1876-1916) the way of the wild was a fact of life. London just simply wrote his stories. And through his words, left a legacy of work that will continue to enrich the lives of readers for many generations to come.
