Are you ready for a trip to the moon?

I received a free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, however, I like to review books to let others know how I feel about them and would have provided the review anyway.

America is planning to place a permanent, self-sustaining base on the moon for future mining and tourism. To start laying the "ground work" for this base, three astronauts are launched from Cape Canaveral.

The three astronauts, Mia Riggs, George Washington and Robert Reyes work together as a great team to set up the 3 basic structures for the base and are awaiting the replacement crew who will bring more building supplies so that they can work on building more structures on the base while the intrepid 3 are to head for home.

En route, a strange anomoly causes their ship to veer slightly off course and they end up landing inside a strange crater, rather than outside of it. Once they land, they start to notice a strange field that interferes with communications and the field is growing. What is causing the interference and what affect will it have on their project? The Gold Rush Mystery begins....

The book Gold Rush Mystery was a good read and I really enjoyed it if it is the first in a series. I would have enjoyed a little more character development and need to read what happened to the missing astronauts. “I received a copy of this book in exchange for a review”. Not really Gift program did not work for me.

Earth has decided to put a permanent base on the moon. What happens when the base is set up is... This is a wonderful book. There is so many mysteries to discover and an ending that has a lasting effect. I thought of this book long after I had read it. Mit Sandru is an author who knows his science and gives attention to details. I see there is another book in this series. I look forward to reading it. This is an author and new book series to watch. I have read all 7 of these and can't wait for what she's got left up her sleeve! I highly recommend these books to anyone who likes action, mystery and lots of weird stuff in their reading. And let me just say, I want a Cleo too! She's awesome!

Great series. Worth reading if you like Atlantis and Fallen Angel legend themes

I love the entire Belial series so the comments are about the series. I think the quality of writing as been consistent. The writing is solid. The character development is good and the dialogue is believable. There are so many sci-fi/fantasy/mystery books by less known authors with very 2 dimensional characters with "B movie" dialogue. This series is not that.

The series starts out focus on the myth of Atlantis which intrigued me. Then it blends in and focuses on angels, nephilim, and other Biblical themes but as if they were real and had historical and rational explanations. However, it is not a religious book by any means.

It feels kind of Archaeology/Atlantis myth is real MEETS Dominion (Syfy)/Legion (Fallen Angels on earth) MEETS action heroine/special forces themes. And I love it all. I love that she returned to the Atlantis side of the story but expanded to Lemuria/Mu. I hope to read more and more but I suppose it will have to come to an end sometime.

As far as Apocalypses go...this book is weird.

What a killer addition to the Apocalypse Weird world. Dirty, sweaty Sci-Fi. You can almost smell the sea and it's briny abominations from the deep. A noir-style novella with a troubled lead actress. Florida, The Keys, Zombies, what could go wrong?

Forbes West takes the Apocalypse to another level entirely. The suspense will keep you up all night reading, and the horror will give you some twisted dreams.

Nothing average about Medium Talent

I had two thoughts when I finished Medium Talent by Forbes West, the latest offering in the Apocalypse Weird canon.

Thought 1: Wow. What was that?

Thought 2: How the hell am I going to write a review on this book?

Medium Talent is a book of layers: layers of time, layers of character, layers of plot. It begins in media res (“in the middle of things” for you non-Latin speakers), at the start of the climax of the book, then hops back and forth through time to tell the story. The apocalypse happened three years ago and the world has settled into a new “normal.” Relief Zones, under the purview of a pseudo-governmental organization called the Supply Org, operate to save the last of humanity. Sadly, even the Apocalypse will not unseat the 1%-ers of this world. The 1% have found their niche in the new world order and have retained all the privileges that money and power can buy steal.

Main character Wendy Wicker lives in the Key West Relief Zone. In fact, Wendy lives in the Hemingway House, a place I visited last year. In the past three years, her post-apocalyptic family of fifty souls has dwindled to five and she’s well on the way to reducing that number even further. It’s a Hobbesian life in the Zone, which is to say…” continual fear and danger of violent death, and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.”

Author West peels back the layers of time and plot and character slowly, and in such a way as to keep the reader continually off-balance. At first, I found this annoying, but slowly—as the truth about Wendy was revealed–I came to realize this technique was deliberate. Forbes West was doing his damndest to sabotage my normal reading experience. That feeling of helplessness and disorientation was exactly what I was supposed to be experiencing.

West is clearly a Hemingway fan and I’m sure any Freudian-trained psychoanalyst worth his cocaine could make short work of the relationship between Wendy Wicker, Forbes West, and Hemingway in 1934…

As I’ve noted before on this blog, I’m on a mission to read all of the Apocalypse Weird novels, so I like to do a little compare and contrast. West has some great unique details in Medium Talent, like the cinnamon smell of the undead and sea creatures that inhabit the waters off the Key West. This is also the first AW novel that tells the story exclusively from the POV of the bad guy…who is also might be the good guy—did I mention it was disorienting?

If you’ve enjoyed the Apocalypse Weird novels to date (and what does it say about you as a person if you enjoy a book about the disintegration of society?), pick up the oxymoronically-titled Medium Talent for a unique take on the end of the world.

Be warned: you won’t like it—and that’s the point.

It’s been several years since a massive storm decimated the world. The undead are roaming Florida, and abominations inhabit the sea. The government has largely fallen, with refugee districts under the charge of the Supply Org, a welfare agency turned gangster. At the heart of it all is smuggler Wendy Wicker, captain of the Medium Talent, who finds herself on the wrong side of Hoxhaist revolutionaries.

Forbes West does a stand-up job of bringing the muggy, heated atmosphere of the Florida Keys to life in this ninth entry to the Apocalypse Weird continuum, and you can practically feel the briny sea on your skin while reading. There’s a certain freshness to West’s take on the AW tropes, and a few surprises, too, which makes this a great addition to the developing Weird mythos.

By jumping forward into a post-apocalyptic setting, West is able to give us some characters who have grown world-weary by the disasters plaguing the world. They’re crusty, battle-scarred survivors who’ve seen it all and then some. This spares us a retread on already well-covered familiar territory, like the Day of Blindness or the anticipatory build-up of a new world-ender. All that has come and gone, and we’re plunked down right into the thick of things.

There’s a wonderfully noir-ish feel to the story as well, and Wendy Wicker is a truly interesting character in her own right. She’s lost her husband, is detached from her current family, and half-mad from all she’s been through. She’s the type of gal who dances a jig after getting the draw on a thug who wants her dead, and then gets sloshed at the bar.

In addition to giving the Keys a dystopic, lived-in familiarity, populated by intriguing personalities, West also puts a terrific spin on another AW staple: the demonic 88 and their Black Hand. It’s a wonderfully nifty spin that’s a far cry from prior representations of these roguish villains.

It’s Forbes West’s ability to take the established conceits of the Apocalypse Weird series and twist them upside down and over around on itself again that was the most appreciated feature of Medium Talent. The story and situations are a cool breeze of fresh air after several introductory tales that overlapped a lot of familiar territory. In Medium Talent, the familiar is kept far off in the background, but still draws enough threads to connect with all that’s come before. It also helps expand on the building mythology that runs through the backbone of the AW books, while forging ahead with its own unique charter. West gives us an intriguing spin on what’s expected of an Apocalypse Weird book, while dragging in plenty of strange details to keep the pages turning.
