Beautiful story
By Ophelia D
I read this story to my children (the youngest is 12, oldest 21) recently. It is a beautiful short story, and brought a feeling of calmness and peace to our home at bedtime.

I can see this being a favourite that we read at least every year; especially at Christmas time.

Story of a Miracle
By pippalou
This is a short story, and it's very poignant. It's set in the time of Christ in Jerusalem. Zia is a little crippled hunchback who has the good fortune to encounter the grace of God, which changes his life for the better. I liked the story very much, and I like a lot of the authors other books, including The Secret Garden.

As a Navy SEAL, Rick Mann fought his way to hell and back, but he's never faced a challenge quite like protecting Sierra Cox. She's spoiled, she's annoying...and he's never wanted a woman more. That's a problem for so many reasons. At the top of that list is he needs to keep his head in the game because even though Sierra doesn't take anything seriously, including Rick, the threats on her life are very real.

Also, don't miss Rick's SEAL brothers in Night with a SEAL, Saved by a SEAL, SEALed at Midnight, Kissed by a SEAL, Loved by a SEAL, and Wed to a SEAL in the USA TODAY best-selling Hot SEALs series.

Enjoyable Novella
By Jen Twimom
Forced into an early retirement after injury while serving as a Navy SEAL, Rick Mann is bored of his day job and misses the action. Although he likes the private security firm, GAPS, that he started with his former teammates and best friends, Rick has yet to experience time in the field. So when GAPS is offered a job providing private security, Rick jumps at the chance to take the job without knowing any of the details.

Sierra Cox works hard and respects her bosses, so she doesn’t want to have any time away from her job as an actress. However when it looks like Sierra’s stalker may want to harm her, GAPS insists she gets away for a while. Spending alone time with her sexy bodyguard, Sierra ponders the benefits of a fling with Rick.

Overall, I enjoyed Protected by a SEAL, even more than I thought based on the blurb. I was worried that Rick and Sierra would spend a lot of time picking on the stereotype of the other. But other than some mild generalizations, each was respectful of the other's occupation, which made the story more pleasurable (although around the halfway point, Rick does start to refer to Sierra as “princess,” which annoyed me). However, the pair has wonderful chemistry, and I found myself cheering for them. And while it’s not a complex story, there is enough character development and plot to make it interesting.

I did have one thing that really bothered me about the story. When the pair finally have sex, although it was hot and steamy, and the fact that he’s her bodyguard aside, Rick doesn’t bother using a condom. He made assumptions that frankly, were unprofessional and I felt went too far, which kind of ruined the scene for me.

Apart from that instance, generally, the story flows well. The action and romance make for a quick and entertaining read. Like the previous stories in the series, Protected by a SEAL has more of an HFN (happily for now) ending than an HEA (happily ever after). Sierra and Rick’s romance isn't over, and it may never work, but for now it is sweet, sexy, and passionate. I have to take the story at face value and enjoy it for what it is, rather than think about the long-term. It’s tough because I wonder how will they ever make it work with her high-profile, high-demand job and his work in a different state. Putting my “what ifs” aside, Protected by a SEAL is worth the afternoon read, and it left me with the happies.

My Rating: B, Liked It

Phoned In
By Linda D
Ms. Johnson usually writes tautly constructed romantic suspense with well developed relatable characters starring a classic alpha male and a strong, yet feminine female lead. Unfortunately, this time she missed the mark for all of those features. The male protagonist, Rick, was far from the competent professional soldier we've met in other novels of the series. Actually, none of the SEALS were written to the standards previously seen. It seemed as if the men of GAPS bumbled through this assignment like raw trainees. Without giving too much away, the red herring was obvious and it was unbelievable that combat veterans would ignore their instincts in favor of a quick resolution. Or that they would make note of learning to listen to their instincts in the future, as if that lesson hadn't been mastered in hundreds of combat missions. Speaking of quick, the "romance" was twenty-four hours of sex between people who admittedly considered it "hate sex" and displayed almost no tender feeling. The heroine, rather than a strong woman in need, was a spoiled brat of a narcissist who looks down on most of the world, Rick included. She questioned everything, not believing she was in danger, going so far as to be annoyed with her protector even after he saved her from a bullet meant for her head. I understand that the author was trying to convey that Sierra comes from a world based on appearance rather than substance, but surely not all physically fit men in film are muscle bound buffoons. There were hints of a stronger better person, but they weren't developed. Similarly, Rick came off as a boy desperate to prove himself, rather than a highly skilled and experienced veteran. And what was with hiding the fact that the GAPS men are retired SEALS? That's not a dirty little secret, it's the main qualification for providing personal protection services! All in all, I was very disappointed in this novel. I would recommend it to series fans only so they can be privy to Rick's installment (though he doesn't show well in it). I have to wonder whether Ms. Johnson ran out of time to meet a deadline, or brought in a ghost writer. This was not up to her usual standards and undid a lot of good work previously put in to develop the story of GAPS and the men involved in it.

Good Read
By Madm007
I really like this series and the books can stand alone. I loved this whole romance between Rick and Sierra. I do wish the book had been longer as I feel there were a lot of parts that could have used more depth or detail. It was a fast read with drama and lots of sass and humor.

Excellent survival story, great premise, eager to discover more
By Kerryann Kenney
First book of YA fantasy series, enthralling and eager to read more in this series. Based in Arizona, lots of detail about survival, a multiverse, a young man coming of age. Really fun. Gavin is a likeable young man that learns more about the father he lost when he was 2 when he is thrust into his role as a Journeyman by the twisted ambitions of another man. Gavin travels through a portal and begins to understand who he is, who his father is, what it means to be a journeyman. The friendships that Gavin makes at home and during his travels reveal his character and his potential. I would recommend this book to any YA friend that likes adventure or fantasy. I read this in one night, could not put it down.

Two brothers, Jack and Charlie Davis, are pilots in the US Army Air Forces. Captain Charles Davis, West Point '39, flies B-17s with the 19th Bomb Group. Lieutenant John T. "Jack" Davis flies P-40s with the 21st Pursuit Squadron. The two young men are part of the reinforcements sent to the Philippines in the late fall of 1941. Charlie must fly his B-17 across the Pacific with a poorly-trained, inexperienced crew just to reach Clark Field, his base in the Philippines. Jack arrives in Manila with his squadron mates to discover there are no airplanes ready for them to fly. To their north, on the island of Formosa, the Japanese Army and Navy wait for word from Tokyo to go to war, with forces that greatly outnumber the Philippines garrison. When the war begins the two brothers must call upon everything they have in terms of skill and training to survive.

Review
"Everything We Had" feels like a book which could have been written in the 1950s or 1960s by a veteran of the Pacific War. Burkhalter puts readers into the minds of those about to fight a war. ... The technical aspects are scrupulously accurate and well written. ... puts readers into the cockpit of the aircraft, so accurately readers can just about smell the fuel and leather.  ... captures an Army Air Force growing more quickly than it is capable of. Spare parts and personnel are short. Bases are hastily built, airfields and taxiways inadequate, and quarters rough. ... Burkhalter's attention to detail serves rather than slows the tale. If you are looking for an exciting story which recaptures an era when flying was still an adventure, you will want to read this book.

An early WWII drama about those who fought when there was hardly anything to fight with
By Richard Schofield
Outstanding read. Burkhalter competently weaves a riveting tale of WWII air corps drama with exceptional historical detail. It's easy to gain a sense on the macro level of the air war for the Phillippines right before and just following Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor; Burkhalter shines however in bringing the reader's attention down to the level of understanding the intricate logistics, flying procedures, effect of flight experience, and mechanics of air to air, and air to ground battle, from the airman's point of view - as in, that of pilot, gunner, and navigator. Burkhalter writes with a sense of knowing these vintage World War II airplanes inside out, and should, given his post for many years as one of the curators of the Hickory Aviation Museum, and writer and editor of its monthly newsletter. His account in Everything We Had is the perfect way to go back in time and relive those tempestuous hours, days and weeks of the US's early attempts at air defense right on the heels of the Pearl Harbor attack.

Historical Fiction that Delivers a Time Travel Experience
By Marianne Dyson
Disclaimer: I know the author, and he sent me the book for my honest review.

One of the appeals of historical fiction is the opportunity to travel through time and experience a world that is, in many ways, as alien to us as the imagined worlds of science fiction. Everything We Had not only provides a window through which to view the world of military aviation in 1941, but a chance to wrap your hands around the controls of a P-40 fighter and dive through the skies above the Philippines, and crawl into the cramped cockpit of a B-17 with itchy sweat rolling down your back as you lumber down a tropical landing strip with only the headlights of a jeep to guide your ascent. This book delivers the kind of sensory experience that many readers crave.

The flights in military aircraft are stuffed with sufficient detail to satisfy even hard core aviation enthusiasts without overwhelming those with only a cursory knowledge of flight operations. The flight and training issues aren’t just filler, either: they are integral to the story of the two main characters, Jack and Charlie Davis, who are pilots and brothers doing their best to serve their country under very challenging conditions.

Those readers anticipating aerial dog fights will need to be patient. The story is paced rather deliberately to make the reader anxious for action and yet dreading the inevitable death and destruction that accompany war, just like the airmen trying to focus on their training while waiting for the Japanese to attack. When that attack happens, it isn’t where or when they expected, and the way it plays out offers a satisfying conclusion while setting up nicely for the next book.

Though the Davis brothers dwell in the historical past, their story has its uncanny counterparts in modern times as brave young military men and women fall victim to inadequate communications and training, and yet offer to give everything they have to protect our precious freedoms.

A fine historical fiction novel

Everything We Had

a Novel of the Pacific Air War

November – December 1941

By Tom Burkhalter

A Book review by, JR Hafer, aviation writer

Author Tom Burkhalter has written a fine historical fiction novel, titled Everything We Had: a novel of the Pacific Air War November- December 1941.

Now what I personally like about historical fiction is the blending of setting and historical fact with an engaging story line to produce a work that is educational and informative as well as entertaining. And this author has done his homework! The flying scenes are not too technical, so a non-aviator can enjoy reading this book without getting lost in the jargon. But it will also keep the seasoned fliers interested and entertained. In fact they will both hastily keep turning the pages!

The action of the book occurs as the US tries to reinforce its garrison in the Philippines. The main characters are two brothers, Jack and Charlie Davis, both pilots in the US Army Air Forces. Charlie flies a B-17D Flying Fortress, while Jack flies the Curtiss P-40E. The Japanese are already at war with China and have forcibly annexed the former French colony of Indochina. War is coming between the United States and Japan; the only question is when.

Burkhalter develops his characters and plot with the ease of making a new friend, and without the awkwardness of wedging a new mother-in-law into a ready-made family. He has a style which is easy to read, flowing smooth as silk. He reminds me of W.E.B. Griffin and I am definitely a Bill Butterworth Fan. If you are too, I think you would like reading this new author, Tom Burkhalter.

Needless to say I am very much enthralled with Everything We Had. I highly recommend it for your investment in time to read and money to purchase. Additionally there is good news: The story will continue! Jack and Charlie will appear in at least two more books coming out soon. The second novel is titled A Snowball’s Chance, set during the fighting around Java and Mindanao. The third book is Boxcar Red Leader, due out before Christmas this year. Personally, I can’t wait to read them!

Alan Sawner: Rising Shadows, by William Silver

This is all true, every word in this book. Alas the human race was too primitive to be allowed to remember. All traces of any incident that would remind us were erased. Though, I have found records. Records that were left by a human who wanted us to remember. Scottish billionaire, Alan Sawner had put together an expedition to a group of mysterious islands. Only two of the crew would survive and they would have to make a decision. A decision which might bring about the apocalypse and change the lives of billions. Read on if you must. Read on to discover our past, to find the answers, to unravel the secrets of creation and uncover the truth behind the beginning. Though, this book is most likely to end up in the fiction rack of any bookstore it gets to, those who want to can believe that it is real. In fact many events that we previously couldn't explain are made clearer from what Mr Sawner has sent in his messages. The truth about our world is too massive to grasp. The enormity of this will take not one, but several books to fill, but till then, all that I, William Silver, have to say is. . .believe.

  • Walden (/ˈwɔːldən/; first published as Walden; or, Life in the Woods), by noted transcendentalist Henry David Thoreau, is a reflection upon simple living in natural surroundings. The work is part personal declaration of independence, social experiment, voyage of spiritual discovery, satire, and manual for self-reliance. First published in 1854, it details Thoreau's experiences over the course of two years, two months, and two days in a cabin he built near Walden Pond, amidst woodland owned by his friend and mentor Ralph Waldo Emerson, near Concord, Massachusetts. The book compresses the time into a single calendar year and uses passages of four seasons to symbolize human development.

    From School Library Journal
Grade 9 & Up--Henry David Thoreau's classic, first published in 1854 and reporting on his experiences at the eponymous site where he lived in physical and social independence during the mid-1840's, receives refreshing treatment here. William Hope reads leisurely but with feeling, offering listeners the illusion that the author is speaking directly to them. The abridgements are not substantive, so listeners will feel that they have become acquainted with the complexities of a text that is both orderly and sprinkled with irony and other literary devices. The chapters are tastefully set off by musical interludes that complement Thoreau's own rhythms. Not only is this an excellent alternative for students assigned to read the text that is often offered in tiny print without benefit of margins, but it is also possible to suggest this to thoughtful teens who are seeking an intellectually engaging listening experience for their personal enjoyment. Hope's pacing invites readers with minimal skills to accompany their print foray with his narration. The careful editing here assures that they will not become lost between page and sound.

    From Library Journal
This edition of Thoreau's classic contains an introduction and annotations by Bill McKibben, who asserts that "at the close of the 20th century, it is most crucial to read Walden as a practical environmentalist's volume, and to search for his heirs among those trying to change our relation to the planet." Even if you don't buy his argument, you still get a dandy little hardcover for $15.

    Self Help At Its Best
    By William Brennan
This is one of the most influential books in American history. I picked it up for the first time in thirty years only to realize that Throreau's philosophy had long ago permeated my being. I remember being blown away by my first reading more than half a century ago, but with each immersion new depths are achieved.

Thoreau sought both authenticity and simplicity in his life. He never abandoned Concord and the real world but merely sought refuge at Walden to plumb the depths of his being. Serious introspection and brilliant writing show each of us the the way to our own core. Can we stand the examination? That is for each of us to determine.

The Transcendentalists may never have been able to define their philosphy, but what remains of it more than a century after the movement's passing can be summed up in Thoreau's always upbeat outlook of "...if one advances confidently in the direction of his dreams, and endeavors to live the life which he has imagined, he will meet success unexpected in common hours."

One cannot read Walden without gaining confidence in one's ability to change direction in life and optimism about the future. We do not have to live lives of conformity and quiet desparation. "In the long run men hit only what they aim at. Therefore, though they should fail immediately, they had better aim at something high."

There has never been a book that better expresses American optimism, and there is no reason for us to lose confidence now. Simplify and be as close to authentic as you can be and all will turn out well. Oh, and while you're at it question authority.

If there could be a six star book, this would be my candidate.

    Reflecting Pond
    By Nancy Wisser
Walden, what is it? Is it a book on nature, a book on ecology, a book on human nature, a prescient description of the struggle between modern civilization and the land that nurtured it, a critique of mankind, a string of quotable gems, an account of a mind, or, like Star Wars, a way of slipping a deep and human spirituality into someone else's mind without their recognizing it? It depends on who is doing the reading and when. Read it for any of these purposes, and it will not disappoint. If you've never read it, read it. If you read it for class years ago and hated it, read it again. This may be the most subtle, multi-layered and carefully worked piece of literature you'll ever find. By keeping the down-to-earth tone (no doubt in reaction to the high-flying prose of his friend, R.W. Emerson) Thoreau pulls a Columbo, and fools us into thinking he's writing simply about observing nature, living in a cabin, or sounding a pond. Somehow by the end of Walden, however, you may find it is your self he has sounded. People have accused Thoreau of despising mankind, but read deeper and you will discover he loved people well enough to chide us, show us our faults (admitting he's as bad as the worst of us), and give to all of us this wonderful gift, a book you could base your life on. There is more day to dawn, he reminds us at the end: the sun is but a morning star.

The negative reviews here are frighteningly revealing
    By Kerry Walters
As a professor of philosophy, I at one time regularly took classes of first year college students to Concord for a week-long intensive seminar on Emerson and Thoreau. I eventually abandoned the seminar, because I discovered that each class was progressively more hostile to what these two wonderful persons stood for. The ..... reviews written by young people of this edition of _Walden_ are, then, disconcertingly familiar to me. I obviously disagree with their evaluations of the book and of Thoreau's character. But what's interesting is why they have such a negative reaction to a book written, as Thoreau says, for young people who haven't yet been corrupted by society. What is it about the culture in which we live that encourages such hostility to his eloquent plea for simplicity? It's too facile to suggest that the backlash is motivated only by resentful pique at what's seen as Thoreau's condemnation of contemporary lifestyles, although I suspect this is part of the explanation. I'd be interested in reading the thoughts here of other readers who are likewise puzzled and disturbed by "Generation Y's" negative response to Thoreau.
