Another great Ben Hood read.
By claudette valliere
Another great Ben Hood read by Lindsay. Spoiler alert.

This one starts with Rod and Ben at Rod's house. Seems Rose and Rod are having a few problems and Ben suggests a sexy holiday.

Rose isn't hard to convince but Rod is his usual pig headed self. He does finally agree though so he and Rose are on their way to an exclusive island getaway.

Ben then learns he's inherited a house and land in Shellharbour which is outside Sydney.

His Aunt Annie Porter, a woman he hasn't seen in thirty years has died and left her house and two million dollars and her entire estate to Ben. Ben decides he will go and take a look at what he's inherited.

On arrival the first person he meets is Beatrice Ferri.

Ferri is sixty seven years old but has quite the figure for her age. Of course Ben notices this. She's also one dirty old woman who makes a play for Ben. Not happening.

Ferri does tell Ben that there is a real estate company that's been trying to buy the four beachfront properties of which Annie Porters, now Bens, is one. Ferri, Ben, Sharon Wallace and Alfred Wicker are the homeowners and threats have been made by Cotter and Slate the real estate company headmen.

So begins another fine Ben Hood read.

This one has Ben, Sharon, her daughter Miranda, Alfred Wicker, Ferri, a python named Bruce, a Rod and Rose rediscovering their love on a sexy vacation, a Ben who discovers his Aunt was murdered, the police, crooked cops, Detective Sgt. Kay Hogan who works with Ben and does spend a couple of nights in his bed, Sharon who also spent a night with Ben, a Sharon who's jealousy gets the better of her, hidden agendas, a gyrocopter Ben's Uncle who was an inventor produced, a Ben who gets to fly it, threats to Ben by men who aren't anywhere near as good as he is, the head man hired by Slater, the head man who thinks he can contain Ben Hood, several fights, a murderer no one would have believed and Ben Hood taking his time, figuring the whole thing out and keeping he and others alive.

Another Five Star read. Wish Bruce had been a dog though. Who the hell keeps snakes??? LOL

Lindsay has written another exceptional Ben Hood story.
By Barry Rowland
I have read each book in the Ben Hood Series. Virtually every time I finish one I think that particular book is the best one. Certainly this one is no exception. Ben receives an inheritance from his Aunt. It seems simple but of course it never is with a Ben Hood Adventure. He has crooked real estate agents willing to murder to get Ben's inheritance along with three other area houses. The characters in the book are believable, interesting and the women are exceptional. I think this is probably the best written and most interesting of the Ben Hood books so far. Drew Lindsay always does a great job. In this particular book I feel he has exceeded himself it that is possible.

A Tricky Inheritance
By Kindle Customer
Wow. This latest Ben Hood thriller had me guessing to the very last few pages. An awesome story with a solid mystery that only seems clear on the surface. This tale has all the best elements of a Ben Hood adventure, with lots of action and some key comedy provided by Rodney and Rose. I especially enjoyed the sudden appearance of Bruce, the cuddly python. Maybe he will make another appearance soon. All in all, a most satisfying and somewhat shocking Ben Hood thriller. Now the only problem is waiting for the next one..

By KC Connor
A young boy reminds his parents that being 'perfect' has less to do with outward appearance and more to do with the beauty of being unique and different. The traditional hunt for a 'perfect' Christmas tree is a great metaphor to reinforce the lessons that beauty is not always symmetrical and evenly spaced branches. This beautifully illustrated book is a whimsical holiday reminder that we can reinforce positive ideals in everyday activities, and encourages families to re-think their own perspectives and views about what makes something "perfect."

Meaningful Christmas story!
By Steve Horlacher
This is a wonderful story about the Carney family getting their tree for the upcoming Christmas. The search brings the typical debate about which tree is the most beautiful as the family decides which one to take home. However, for one reason or another the gangly fir catches the eye of young Alec despite its imperfections. The story ends with a meaningful lesson about the value of being unique, and showing kindness to everyone even those who are different! This is a great book for kids, and one that will be cherished for years to come!

By Lara Kauffman
This book is a beautiful story of the annual Christmas tree hunt and the unlikely choosing of a tree that would have been forgotten. It is a great lesson for children and families to share and will make everyone look at their chosen tree differently! The author is a friend of mine and we also often go to the same tree farm where it is set, but even if she were not, I would pick up this book for my kids this holiday season. Giving a book to a child is the best kind of gift and this is one they can read each year as a tradition before the hunt!

ORDERS are ORDERS, by Edmund Aiken

Most of us have heard about “Black Operations” where our servicemen engage in covert missions around the globe such as the Seal Team 6 takedown of Osama Bin Laden. The reason we hear about these missions is that there are almost always press leaks.

There have been many stories written by the participants of these leaked operations, but what if you were involved in an operation that was so secret and embarrassing to the government that it was never leaked? How could you legally tell your story? How would you begin to tell the world what it was like at nineteen years old to become ensnared as an assassin in a murderous clandestine operation? That is what this book is about. It is a vehicle with enough fiction added for me to finally tell my story before it is too late.

The mission I was involved with, that amazingly was not leaked and has remained secret for over 50 years is the Marine Corp Recon involvement in “Operation Phoenix” in North Vietnam back in 1958-59. That was before the start of the Vietnamese War, in fact, this unlawful action might even have been the trigger for the Vietnam War.

“Operation Phoenix” was the inane creation of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). When first implemented, it was their solution to stopping the spread of communism in Vietnam. Based on their distorted logic, they concluded the best method to use was to parachute Marines into the larger towns and villages in North Vietnam and have them kill all of the people there that were teaching the communist doctrine.

“Operation Phoenix” was resurrected later in 1965-72 with missions of an again appalling but of a different and less criminal nature (they were killing Viet Cong supporters during wartime) were conducted by Army Special Forces and are well documented. What is not documented is the unlawful Marine Corp Recon actions 7 years earlier. To avoid embarrassment to our government, all mention of these earlier activities has been expunged from the archives, and it is a totally blanked out 2-year segment of Marine Corp history.

This book is in two distinctive parts. The first part is the fictional story of a boy and girl that have just graduated from Stanford, who ended up traveling to Vietnam due to the boy’s dying mother’s urgings to investigate hidden American war crimes. During their investigation, they accidentally discover the memoir of a young Marine executed for multiple counts of murder in Hanoi 48 years earlier. It then continues to track their determined efforts and hurdles to corroborate and prepare this manuscript for publication.

The second part is the document they discovered. It is based on my memoirs as a Marine Sharpshooter (Sniper) and provides an accounting of those secretive black operations in North Vietnam. It starts with a glimpse of my childhood that led up to my joining the Marines and my training and progression to eventually becoming a Sharpshooter in Marine Corp Recon. It then follows my later personal experiences conducting those illegal “Black Operations” with my Recon Team, doing High Altitude Low Opening (HALO) parachute jumps into North Vietnam and assassinating many Vietnamese government officials and Russian officers.

At the end of my involvement in the operation in North Vietnam, it continues to track my life through several bizarre months I spent surviving with Dayak headhunters in central Borneo, but most importantly during that time, my realization of the magnitude and significance of the crimes I had committed.

And yes, there is sex in my book -- with anything having to do with Marines there is always sex!

Gripping adventure
By Amazon Customer
I couldn't wait to see what would happen to the main character next (in Part Two). I thought the writing had the tang of reality so that I bought into the actions & misfortunes & good luck that befell him. I thought the writing was clear and strong; I have to admit I wasn't too wild about Part One, but Part Two was a "gripper". Aiken invented one astounding twist after another. I could see this as a movie.

This book gives an excellent background on U.S. actions prior to the expansion of the Vietnam war. This book will give historians never known facts about a this war that was never reported. A definite read for those who fought in this war and or have studied other revelations on the senseless beginnings of this conflict.

Har to believe.
By Lloyd R.
As a Marine (Grunt and Tanker) (Iron Horse Marine) I find a lot of it very hard to believe. If it is true and told as fiction then our government has been more messed up than just the current crop.

  • The Prince (Italian: Il Principe) is a 16th-century political treatise by the Italian diplomat and political theorist Niccolò Machiavelli. The Prince is arguably the first works of modern political philosophy. Although it is relatively short, the treatise is the most remembered of Machiavelli's works and responsible for bringing the word "Machiavellian" into usage as a pejorative. The base assumption in the treatise is that the aims of a prince — such as glory and survival — justify the use of immoral means to achieve those ends.

    Amazon.com Review
When Lorenzo de' Medici seized control of the Florentine Republic in 1512, he summarily fired the Secretary to the Second Chancery of the Signoria and set in motion a fundamental change in the way we think about politics. The person who held the aforementioned office with the tongue-twisting title was none other than Niccolò Machiavelli, who, suddenly finding himself out of a job after 14 years of patriotic service, followed the career trajectory of many modern politicians into punditry. Unable to become an on-air political analyst for a television network, he only wrote a book. But what a book The Prince is. Its essential contribution to modern political thought lies in Machiavelli's assertion of the then revolutionary idea that theological and moral imperatives have no place in the political arena. "It must be understood," Machiavelli avers, "that a prince ... cannot observe all of those virtues for which men are reputed good, because it is often necessary to act against mercy, against faith, against humanity, against frankness, against religion, in order to preserve the state." With just a little imagination, readers can discern parallels between a 16th-century principality and a 20th-century presidency. --Tim Hogan

    Review
“[Machiavelli] can still engage our attention with remarkable immediacy, and this cannot be explained solely by the appeal of his ironic observations on human behaviour. Perhaps the most important thing is the way he can compel us to reflect on our own priorities and the reasoning behind them; it is this intrusion into our own defenses that makes reading him an intriguing experience. As a scientific exponent of the political art Machiavelli may have had few followers; it is as a provocative rhetorician that he has had his real impact on history.” –from the Introduction by Dominic Baker-Smith

One of the most influential books of all time
    By T. Simons
The idea of "reviewing" this is more than a little silly -- it's arguably the most influential non-religious work of all time -- but I thought a few comments & historical notes might still be worthwhile.

"The Prince" was essentially the first work of political realism in Western thought -- the first work of Western political philosophy that concerned itself not with the ideal government (as Plato had done in his _Republic_) but with the practical realities of getting and holding power. To describe the impact and influence of that willingness, that first notion that conventional morality might not be the best guide to success, would be as impossible a task as trying to summarize the influence of Galileo. Napoleon is rumored to have written extensive annotations to this book; Stalin allegedly kept a copy on his nightstand. Half of Shakespeare's villains (Iago, Richard III, etc.) derive their character in whole or part from this text.

Most of this book is extraordinarily controversial, even today, yet still fundamentally difficult to argue against; there's a reason the Catholic Church kept it on the _Index Librorum Prohibitorum_ for centuries. If you're looking for food for thought, it's here.

This particular kindle edition is fairly good; the text is cleanly presented with few typographical or scanning errors, and the translator has clearly made a significant effort to present the text as accurately as possible in a modern translation, with several footnotes detailing possible alternate translations of particular words, etc. In addition to the text of _The Prince_, this edition also includes two shorter historical works by Machiavelli, "Descriptions of the Methods Adopted by the Duke Valentino When Murdering Vitellozzo Vitelli, Oliverotto da Fermo, the Signor Pagolo, and the Duke di Gravina Orsini," and "The Life of Castruccio Castracani of Lucca." ("Duke Valentino" is an alternate name for Cesare Borgia). Both additional texts are, in essence, case studies of how contemporary historical figures achieved success by acting according to the precepts which Machiavelli outlines in the main body of the text, and as such are very useful and interesting companion reads.

As a final note, if anyone has recommendations for histories of Italy in this time period, please link me to them in a comment -- after reading this, I want to read more about the era. Thanks!

Realistic Map of How Power is Achieved and Maintained
    By Wayne A. Smith
There are two good reasons to read Machiavelli's classic, "The Prince."
First, so you'll know what everyone is referring to when you come across the adjective "machiavellian" in news stories or other media. This adjective has become so commonplace (and overused) it is almost a cliche. Also, most who use it have never read this letter from Machiavelli, a Rennaisance courtier to his Prince (written from prison), but they insist on peppering writings with this noun turned adjective so much that as a matter of clearly understanding what is meant by the term, famiality with this brief treatise is helpful.
Second, this book does describe most (not all) power situations very well. From politics to corporations to most settings where advancement, influence and control exist, Machiavelli's observations and rules apply.
You will also discover that Machiavelli was not as evil as he is understood to be in popular thought. What he was doing was describing the rules of the game that have existed and always will exist for many situations involving selfish humans in competition. Machiavelli's rules are neither good nor bad in themselves -- they describe a process. What is good or bad is how those who master Machiavelli's rules use their power and position, in a society that tempers actions according to law and basic Judeo-Christian principals. When those principals do not exist (as in Nazi Germany, the Middle Ages or under Communism, or by those who refuse to live by these constraints), Machiavelli's rules take on their demonic and evil cloak; usually because they serve demonic and evil ends. In societies where positive constraints exist, for example the U.S. political system, Machiavellian behavior can produce excellent results. A good example involves Abraham Lincoln, whose ambition led him to use every legitimate trick and stragety to master (and remove) political opponents. His mastery of Machiavellian behavior constrained by the US political system allowed him to save the Union and end slavery.
To fully appreciate the modern lessons that can be taken from this writing, one must translate Medieval sensibilites to their contemporary counterparts. The casual way in which Machiavelli discusses the need to kill opponents was necessary to those who wished to be princes 500 years ago. Today, of course, "killing" is translated as rendering less powerful, or taking an opponent out of the game.
What does one get from this book? It is a roadmap with insights and lessons about how to 1) get ahead of others to attain power; and 2) maintain and expand one's power in the face of others who would usurp one who is in a desirable position.
This book is about ruthlessness and putting the attainment of goals ahead of any other consideration. Plenty of maxims that are also tossed about frequently in media are to be found in Machiavelli's book: "the end justifies the means," "it is better to be feared than loved," "if you fight the prince, kill the prince" to name a few.
It is essential reading to anyone who would be in a competitive environment and hope to advance, if for no other reason than many of one's competitors operate by Machiavelli's dictums (which arise out of human instinct and selfishness). One does not have to operate according to Machaivelli's code -- many examples of alturism and "pluck and luck" exist to defeat any claim that Machiavelli's road map is essential for success. However, human nature and human history deliver far more examples of ruthless self-interest (Machiavellianism) behind success in power situations.
Is Machiavellianism bad? Not in and of itself. Remember, one must translate the Middle Age ethos to current practices -- there usually isn't blood spilled as a result of today's Machiavellian duels, just power and positon. Most political and business leaders are at least partly Machiavellian. The trick is using one's power to good ends. Thus, even though Lincoln and all of our presidents were Machiavellian in their climb to the White House, some of them did darn good work there. The same is true for business leaders. Jack Welch (GE), Bill Gates (Microsoft), anyone who advances past the first few rungs of the corporate ladder or dominates markets at the expense of competitors is using Machiavelli's dictums. The trick of a just and good society is to set the bounds by which power can be attained and exercised so that good and benefits will flow from those who are able to "claw their way to the top."
To summarize, read this book if you want to 1) truly understand when the adjective "Machiavelli" is used to describe people and 2) understand the rules by which most people navigate their way to power.

    Machiavelli's classic, now for Kindle
    By Mr Dad Guy
This review is of the (currently free) Kindle edition of The Prince.

As others have stated at much greater length and with far greater eloquence, this is one of the most important books of political thought and philosophy ever written, and a truly timeless classic. As such, the fact that it's available for free on Kindle makes this a terrific deal, worth every single penny and many more. All the usual conveniences of Kindle applies here: very fast to download via Whispernet, the handiness of being able to annotate and highlight important passages, bookmarking pages you want to reference again later, etc. The slickness of the Kindle format and capabilities plus the inherit worthiness of the book itself easily nets 4 stars.

It's been about forever since I last read The Prince, plus I don't really know anything about Italian, so I'm not really fit to talk about the quality of the translation. Suffice it to say that it's a fairly easy book to read and make sense of, but again I can't speak to how true this particular edition is to its source material.

Unfortunately, there are a few problems with this edition of The Prince that need to be mentioned, and which in the end detract a little from the overall score. The first and biggest is in the formatting of the book. In short, it looks like a plain-text notepad file converted into a Kindle book; there's no navigable Table of Contents or chapter breaks as with most commercial Kindle books, and the book itself flows from the title page almost directly into the background about Machiavelli and then from there straight into The Prince itself, with scarcely a break in the text to mark the transition. For someone well versed in The Prince this probably isn't much of an issue, but for the more casual reader it's a little distracting and may confuse some. The other problem is more one of personal preference, which is that there's no annotations alongside the text to put specific lines into context. Again, for someone well versed in Machiavelli's life and the real-world examples he uses throughout The Prince, this probably isn't a significant issue. For more casual readers, having a little context for the examples he uses would be helpful from time to time.

In the end, you get what you pay for, and as the above-reviewed version of The Prince was free, I can't complain too much. It's brilliant, it's relevant, and it's very convenient to have on my Kindle. What more do you want for the price?

Life in Prairie Land (1846), by Eliza Wood Farnham

Eliza Farnham (1815 –1864) was a famous 19th-century American author of books on the Far West, including “Life in Prairie Land.”

Farnham’s book will be found a work of unusual interest, and one that addresses itself to almost every class of readers. Its intrinsic value, aside from the high reputation of the authoress, must give it a wide circulation. It is made up of a series of charming and lifelike pictures of a personal residence in the Far West—perfect daguerreotypes of a settler’s daily habits, customs, methods of husbandry, &c.; together with graphic sketches of travel in various sections of that far spreading and fertile country. The work is enlivened by a rich vein of irresistible humor, interwoven among passages of great power and eloquent beauty, immensely impressive and suggestive Mrs. Farnham has already acquired no unenviable degree of reputation or the distinguished ability. The author of “Life in Prairie Land,” has for some years past contributed largely to many of our leading periodicals. We advise all who would laugh heartily over passages of keen satire, or be charmed with glowing and beautiful descriptions, who would shed a tear over some of the most touching and thrilling incidents they have ever yet perused, to read this volume.

Miss Farnham's book has all the charm of entire novelty. It conveys a graphic, and probably true picture of western life, possibly here and there a little exaggerated, but taken as a whole full of interest, rich and racy. It has a few faults—what book has not? But where there exists so much to praise we are not disposed to cavil at minor defects. Miss Farnham enters into the business and enjoyments of western life with a heartiness that cannot fail to lend interest to her book.

This is one of the most readable books of the season. It is so rich in graphic descriptions of character and scenery,—in well told anecdotes, and lively pictures of domestic life, that the reader who takes it up for a few moment's amusement, will hardly be able to lay it down until the book is finished. There is a clearness, a distinctness, a " coming to the point,” in all the writings of Mrs. Farnham, which we greatly admire. Her conceptions, both of abstract truths, and of things visible and tangible, seem always to be distinct and vivid, hence the pictures she draws have all the life, like coloring and freshness of reality. There is much likewise, in the subject of this work to recommend it, particularly to city readers. It is surely worth something for "stay at home travelers" to have such a companion and guide through the prairies and forests of the Far West, as the writer of this volume has proved herself to be. Many of them doubtless, after reading it, will prefer the comforts of their present lot, to actual experience of Prairie Lite, though for ourselves, we confess, the perusal of this book has only strengthened our desire for emigration.

We predict for this book what we most certainly wish it, a very wide circulation among the reading community. It has all the exciting interest of fiction, combined with the charm of truth—and we rejoice in the evidence it furnishes, that the philanthrophic labors which press so heavily on the gifted writer, have not tamed her buoy ant spirits, or diminished her intellectual acumen and power.

This book originally published in 1846 has been reformatted for the Kindle and may contain an occasional imperfection for the Kindle and may contain an occasional defect from the original publication or from the reformatting.

A rare history of a young woman's life, nature and travel in Illinois in the late 1830s
    By Donald E. L. Johnson
Life in Prairie Land (Illinois) will intrigue anyone interested in the settlement of central Illinois, the perspectives of a young Quaker-bred and born woman from New York and influenced by Emerson and other intellectuals of her day. The interesting but incomplete introduction suggests that she was intellectually gifted, adventurous, judgmental, resilient and an early feminist as well as a bit prophetic about the development of the state.

As the introduction notes, the book is of uneven quality and is a mixture of autobiography, travel writing, nature writing and even some fiction. It appears to come from a combination of her memories and diary, which she mentions at least once.

My takeaway is that in the late 1830s, Illinois, which became a state in 1818, was pretty wild and undeveloped around what are now the eastern Peoria area towns of Groveland, Morton, Washington and Tremont and points west and south. The author traveled the south and central parts of the state by wagon and stage coach in sunshine, rain and snow. She visited the Starve Rock State Park near Joliet and devotes several pages to its tragic history and natural beauty.

Further, she protrays her fellow settlers as a mixture of tidy transplanted easterners like herself and illiterate, unpleasant and slovenly house keepers and cooks. In those days, travelers stopped at the homes of people who took in guests. Some ran nice clean places, most didn't. And they didn't seem to be big on keeping sleeping rooms warm in the winter.

I've read a lot of American history over the decades, and this is the first book that seems to tell it like it is. Farnham romanticizes the prairies, forests and rivers but not daily living conditions.

Having been raised by a domineering aunt who denied her a formal education, Farnham was mostly self-taught and a voracious reader. That and her personal inclinations made her very sensitive to the poor as well as to indians who had been displaced by settlers and to women who were chattels and house keepers as well as wives and companions.

She expresses strong views of how females are stronger than males that make her a widely recognized early feminist and suffragette. Footnotes to the introduction cite numerous books and articles that credit her as both one of history's strong women as well as an early prison reformer after she left Illinois for the East and California.

What's sad is that Farnham lived only 49 years, dying of TB during the Civil War.

While I read most of the book, I speed read and skimmed numerous pages that were too wordy and descriptive of the flowers, prairies and rivers for me.

As others have mentioned, the book isn't the easiest read, but it is worth it for history buffs.

    Excellent Reading
    By C. Braden
    1. Read the Introduction before you read the book, it clarifies some things about author's life.

    2. Pop some corn, pour a drink and find the recliner. This is a FUN book to read. It is biographical, historical, inspirational, and leaves you wanting more. Seldom does a book inspire me to go buy the other works of an author, but this one does. It's first hand, colorful, and she is WAY ahead of her time in the thought processes. You can picture the people she writes about and I was sorry to see the book end. You can PICTURE being her on the steamer, her descriptions are vivid. It makes you wish you could see the 1830's prairie, and then, again, maybe not. It warms the heart of the good ol days, but shows you also what you'd not have, that maybe you take for granted today. It is clearly written for adults, but teens would be okay readers, there is no gore or violence in it, and it is thought provoking.
My only objection is that it ended.

    Interesting
    By Thomas Sargalski
Ms. Farnham showed an insightful intelligence of her environment and the relationships between men and women. Her advocacy for a better awareness for the rightful treatment of women was admirable. Her descriptions of the environment on the prairie were outstanding, though her description of daily labors in those small, isolated cabins grew tedious, paragraphs a full page long, and I skimmed through the second half of the book. Not an exciting read but very perceptive and well-written on her part.

  • Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World. In Four Parts. By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, and then a Captain of Several Ships, commonly known as Gulliver's Travels (1726, amended 1735), is a prose satire by Irish writer and clergyman Jonathan Swift, that is both a satire on human nature and a parody of the "travellers' tales" literary subgenre. It is Swift's best known full-length work, and a classic of English literature. The book became popular as soon as it was published. John Gay wrote in a 1726 letter to Swift that "It is universally read, from the cabinet council to the nursery." Since then, it has never been out of print.

Gr 7 Up-Jonathan Swift's satirical novel was first published in 1726, yet it is still valid today. Gulliver's Travels describes the four fantastic voyages of Lemuel Gulliver, a kindly ship's surgeon. Swift portrays him as an observer, a reporter, and a victim of circumstance. His travels take him to Lilliput where he is a giant observing tiny people. In Brobdingnag, the tables are reversed and he is the tiny person in a land of giants where he is exhibited as a curiosity at markets and fairs. The flying island of Laputa is the scene of his next voyage. The people plan and plot as their country lies in ruins. It is a world of illusion and distorted values. The fourth and final voyage takes him to the home of the Houyhnhnms, gentle horses who rule the land. He also encounters Yahoos, filthy bestial creatures who resemble humans. The story is read by British actor Martin Shaw with impeccable diction and clarity and great inflection. If broken into short listening segments, the tapes are an excellent tool for presenting an abridged version of Gulliver's Travels.-Jean Deck, Lambuth University, Jackson, TN

No More Excuses - It's Time to Read Gulliver's Travels
    By R. M. Fisher
I am certain that nearly every person in the Western world (and some beyond it) is familiar with the quintessential scene of "Gulliver's Travels," that of a man tied down to the ground and surrounded by tiny humans. I am equally certain however, that only a very small percentage of these people have actually read Jonathan Swift's satirical novel, first published in 1726. If you consider yourself a serious reader, then "Gulliver's Travels" is essential reading, one of the many classic novels that you simply *have* to read before you die.

Divided into four parts, "Gulliver's Travels" is presented as the historical memoirs of Lemuel Gulliver who narrates his strange adventures in undiscovered countries. In doing so, Swift explores and satirises almost every conceivable issue important in both his time and in ours: politics, religion, gender, science, progress, government, family and our basic ideas of defining humanity. As well as this, the novel is full of wonder and humour (some of it bordering on the vulgar!) and Swift's exploration of imaginary societies and countries is satire at its peak - no one before or since has reached Swift's mastery of this style.

Some of the more direct parodies concern people and events that have long since passed away, and as such an index or extensive background is required in order to fully understand the allusions that Swift is making. However, a far larger portion of the text discusses issues that are still relevant to today's readers, especially in the responsibilities of power and the limits to technological/scientific progression.

Part One: "A Voyage to Lilliput" is the most famous segment of the novel, and the context of the afore-mentioned "hostage episode". After taking leave of his family and country, Gulliver is washed up on the shores of an island inhabited by humanoid beings not more than six inches tall. Though at first suspicious, Gulliver soon earns the trust of the Lilliputian people who enlist their newfound giant in defending them from their enemies on the bordering island of Blefufeu - who likewise are desperate to use the giant in their war against Lilliput. Hmm, a squabble over what is considered a weapon capable of mass destruction. Sound familiar? This ability to place modern day references over older texts and their meanings is what separates literature from books - universal themes and concerns that do not age with time.

In Part Two, Gulliver reaches the polar opposite of Lilliput in "A Voyage to Brobdingnag", a country of giants where he becomes the helpless victim of a greedy farmer who exploits his diminutive stature to his own advantage. Displayed as a freak of nature, the tiny Gulliver is forced to perform circus tricks till he finally comes into the care of the royal court. Despite being cared for by the gentle farmer's daughter Grildrig, Gulliver has to survive wasp-attacks, hungry cats and a malicious dwarf before he is finally seized by a hunting bird and set adrift at sea.

One of the most appealing things about Gulliver's travels in both Lilliput and Brobdingnag is the disorientation he feels on re-entering the company of humans of a normal stature - each time they seem either too small or too big and Gulliver is constantly slouching or tip-toeing in an attempt to reconcile his body to what his mind tells him he should see. The best part is that we share this confusion with him, as we ourselves become accustomed to life in the tiny and giant worlds.

Part Three is the least known of the four parts, and for those who have read the novel, the least popular. I consider this unfortunate as it is more full of variety and wonderment than the other segments, contains some of his sharpest parodies and is my personal favourite `voyage' in the novel. Titled "A Voyage to Laputa, Balnibarbi, Luggnagg, Gluggdubdrib and Japan", it is easy to see that it this episode is filled with Swift's most creative inventions. It is here that Gulliver discovers a floating island, a race of immortals, a university in which they attempt to discover the answers to all things and an island of spirits who summon historical figures up out of the past. With everything from inward-eyed people to Alexander the Great to exploding dogs, Part Three has it all.

Finally, in Part Four, the novel reaches its most critical and thought-provoking statement on humankind in "A Voyage to the Country of the Houyhnhnms". Gulliver reaches a country inhabited by a remarkable race of horses with the intelligence of humans - perhaps with even *more* intelligence than humans. Also living here is a disgusting race of beings known as "Yahoos" - filthy, greedy, slothful, lecherous creatures who embody every vice known to mankind - and who are suspiciously humanoid in shape and form. Gulliver is faced with a crisis of the soul: does he really come from the race of Yahoos? Will the Houyhnhnms accept him as one of their own or as a Yahoo? And how can he ever return home with the devastating wisdom he has gained? Swift presents a fascinating study on the dark side of humanity and the nobility of animals in the climax of the novel that is the most controversial, the most studied and the most memorable.

"Gulliver's Travels" is not an easy book to read; like all older literary novels it requires the attention and patience of the reader, has complicated and contemporary issues to discuss and a tendency to be a bit long-winded at times. But regardless of this, "Gulliver's Travels" is a fascinating and enjoyable read and one of those books that just *has* to be read during your lifetime - if not for any other reason but to say that you *have* read it. Though the scanty amount of reviews on this page is disheartening, "Gulliver's Travels" is a must-read, pure and simple.

I also recommend the Hallmark adaptation of Swift's novel - NOT to be watched instead of reading the book, but as a surprisingly faithful and intelligent miniseries that accompanies the novel well.

    NOT THE FULL TEXT!
    By Ms Sharon Kelly
I downloaded this free version of GT so that my Kindle would read it to me on a recent road trip. I'm teaching a college-level class and included the whole text of GT and didn't want to waste time while I was driving 14 hours when I could be reading/lesson preparing for my class. ALAS, this version is CENSORED and only HALF of the book! I am so disappointed that this isn't advertised anywhere. This Kindle edition includes Part I (Lilliput) and Part II (Brobdingnag) ONLY. It is missing Part III (Laputa &c.) and Part IV (Land of Houyhnhynms). Unbelievable. The censorship is ridiculous, too. Beware, you're getting the child-proof version of this classic.

    Not just for kids!
    By A Customer
It's amazing how our perspective changes as we age. What we thought was important as children may now seem completely insignificant, replaced by entirely new priorities, priorities children wouldn't even understand. At the same time, things we used to take for granted, like having dinner on the table, being taken care of when we're ill, or getting toys fixed when they are broken, have become items on adult worry lists.

Your perspective on literature can change, too. Reading a story for a second time can give you a completely different view of it. "Huckleberry Finn" by Mark Twain, which I enjoyed as a sort of an adventure story when I was a kid, now reads as a harsh criticism of society in general and the institution of slavery in particular.

The same thing is true of "Gulliver's Travels" by Jonathan Swift. The first thing I realized upon opening the cover of this book as a college student was that I probably had never really read it before.

I knew the basic plot of Lemuel Gulliver's first two voyages to Lilliput and Brobdingnag, home of the tiny and giant people, respectively, but he had two other voyages of which I was not even aware: to a land of philosophers who are so lost in thought they can't see the simplest practical details, Laputa, and to a land ruled by wise and gentle horses or Houyhnhnms and peopled by wild, beastly human-like creatures called Yahoos.

While this book has become famous and even beloved by children, Jonathan Swift was certainly not trying to write a children's book.

Swift was well known for his sharp, biting wit, and his bitter criticism of 18th century England and all her ills. This is the man who, to point out how ridiculous English prejudices had become, wrote "A Modest Proposal" which suggested that the Irish raise their children as cattle, to be eaten as meat, and thereby solve the problems of poverty and starvation faced in that country. As horrible as that proposal is, it was only an extension of the kinds of solutions being proposed at the time.

So, although "Gulliver's Travels" is entertaining, entertainment was not Swift's primary purpose. Swift used this tale of a guillable traveler exploring strange lands to point out some of the inane and ridiculous elements of his own society.

For example, in describing the government of Lilliput, Swift explains that officials are selected based on how well they can play two games, Rope-Dancing and Leaping and Creeping. These two games required great skill in balance, entertained the watching public, and placed the politicians in rather ridiculous positions, perhaps not so differently from elections of leaders in the 18th century and even in modern times.

Give this book a look again, or for the first time. Even in cases in which the exact object of Swift's satire has been forgotten, his sweeping social commentary still rings true. Sometimes it really does seem that we are all a bunch of Yahoos.
